What Notions do I need to Sew a Bag?

tools and hardware used to bag making

Depending on the bag sewing pattern, you will need (or not) special tools and hardware to make your bags. Especially if you use thick materials like vinyl, leather, or denim. These are some of the most common notions, hardware, and tools you will need to make a bag.

  • Denim or Leather Needles: Heavy-duty needles are perfect for bag making as they can be sewn through materials like leather, vinyl, and canvas/denim.
  • Seam Jumper: A seam Jumper will allow you to easily sew through thick seam allowances with your sewing machine.
  • Hole Puncher: A hole puncher is a cutting sewing tool used to make perfect circular cutouts on fabrics and other materials.
  • Snap Hooks, D rings, and Swivels: You can use these Hardware notions on bag making to add design or function to some elements of your bags, such as the straps or the closures.
  • Rivets for leather: Hold several layers of material in place. The pole of the rivet is inserted in a hole in the material and closed with a cap by applying force.
  • Ladder Lock Slides: Its purpose is to adjust the length of straps in bag patterns.

Tip: What can I use instead of interfacing in bag-making?

You can replace interfacing in bag-making with denim, canvas, or another strong woven material. Ensure you pre-wash the fabrics properly to avoid shrinkage and tint leakage.

Interfacing is mostly used in sewing to provide body and strength to the pattern pieces of the bag.

Most pattern designers will recommend you use heavyweight fusible interfacing. Especially for designer handbag patterns, purse patterns, bags with pockets, and more.
