A Non-Woven Grocery Bag DIY project is a perfect way to help the environment. Plus, you will be looking super stylish when shopping for your groceries in the market. What else is there to say??
“Did you know that this year only, 5 trillion plastic bags will be consumed? That’s 160,000 a second! Put one after another they would go around the world 7 times every hour and cover an area twice the size of France.”
Don’t believe me? Check this site, that has the worldwide count of plastic bags produced. It’s amazingly spooky, right? Just think that by the end of this year, there will be 2 France’s worth of garbage around our lovely earth…..
Did you took the time to read that home page?? How much damage are we making to ourselves!! That’s why I (and surely, you too) make everything I can, to reduce and recycle the most things as in my home. Especially if is about using fabric scraps.
One of those things is to GIFT all my readers this Free Reusable Grocery Bag DIY pattern. Now you can help the environment too by just taking this bags with you when you go grocery shopping and ask the employees to put your items in them instead of the plastic bags. As easy as that you are making the difference.
I know you are more than ready to make this project. So let’s get started.

Materials you’ll need:
- Non-Woven Fabric, Oil Cloth or Vinyl Fabric (about .60 yards or less)
- The Free Cherry Bag pattern
- The Free Cherry Stencil
- Matching Thread
- Fabric Scissors
Keep reading my friend because I am about to show you a 4 steps tutorial on How to Make a Reusable Grocery (or whatever you want to use it for) bag.
Keep in mind that painting the cherry stencil is just optional but it does make the bag prettier right? If you want to use this stencil in your Reusable Grocery Bag DIY project paint it before you start sewing the pieces. FYI I made the point with the end of a pencil.
Reusable Grocery Bag DIY:
Step 1: Sew the Straps of the bag
The first thing you want to do is Fold inside the strap the two edges. Then fold again in half.
The next step is Sewing both sides of your straps at 1/4″ from the edge of each side. Do this with both straps.
Step 2: Prepare and sew the sides and corners of your grocery bag
Mark in the bottom of each bag Front and Back Bodice a dot that is 1/2″ away of each side of the rectangle. Like this:
Then take the side panel and start sewing at 1/2″. When you get to the point we just marked make a notch on the side panel at the same height of the point of the bodice. This notch should be of 1/2″ no more no less.
Then turn the side panel with your hand and finish your stitch.
Repeat this process with the other bodice bag panel.
Step 3: Hem it!
Fold the top edge of the bag 1″ twice and make a straight stitch to hem it.
Step 4: Attach the Bag Handles
The last thing to do here is to attach the bag straps by placing them inside the bag (right on top the hem) and sewing it by making a square to reinforce the straps.
And that’s it!!
You saw how easy this project was??? I am already proud of you by making the choice of using even one of this bags into your daily life. Please don’t forget to share with me your final project. I just can’t wait to see it!!
