I have to admit, some of the strangest little sewing gadgets have ended up being total game-changers in my studio. You know those tools that make you think, “What even is this thing?”.

sewing gadgets over a pink table

Well, they’re the ones I now reach for almost every single project.

From a quirky magnetic seam guide that keeps my stitches perfectly straight to a funny-looking loop turner that saves me from wrestling with tiny straps, these oddballs have completely sped up my sewing and made it more fun.

They might look a bit bizarre, but trust me, once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever sewed without them.

Weird but Effective Sewing Gadgets that will make your life easier.

1. Is it a mouse? Is it a lever? No! Is a cutting laser!

No products found.

This Sewing Laser has it all in one, so you can cut your fabric straight without the need of having to use marking tools and rulers.

It is as amazing as it sounds. You can place it over your fabric and align the laser as you need it to cut perfectly straight lines.

If you are a quilter, this is an especially useful gadget. You will be saving so much time on aligning your pieces.

2. Multi-purpose thang.

I said thang, not a thong! These weird-looking sticks, as useless as they seem, can be very handy!

You can use the hole in the middle to pull elastics or ribbons through waistbands or anything you need to. Also, the flat point is very useful to handle the fabric as it is fed to your sewing machine to avoid puckerings while sewing.

You can also use it to turn super sharp corners inside out.

3. A ring that has it all.

This ring is a 3 3-in-1 sewing gadget: a threader, a thimble, and a knife cutter.

It will fit comfortably in your working hand and be your instant helper. Yes, the one you don’t have to be looking for between the mess.

And on top of all of that, it has a little button that, right after it threads your needle, will grab it and help you pull it through several layers of thick fabric, just like a knife going through butter.

On the product page link, you’ll find a video that demonstrates its use.

4. A Handy Knife Cutter Ring

This charming ring not only adds a delightful touch to your sewing kit, but it also boasts a cleverly concealed blade designed for cutting threads with ease.

Its whimsical design combines functionality with style, making it a perfect accessory for both casual and passionate sewists alike.

The ring’s smooth finish and comfortable fit allow you to wear it effortlessly as you work on your projects, ensuring that you’re always prepared for any threading needs that may arise.

5. Snag nab it

Ok, if you were to see this little thing without the package, I bet you won’t have any idea of what this is. Me neither!

But this Snag Nab tool is the most amazing thing to deal with knit fabrics and sweater fabrics.

If you snag your fabric, simply insert the needle right over the snag and pull it from the other side.

And boom! The snag is gone! Everyone should have one of these.

6. Table Thread cutter

This flower thread cutter works wonders for quilters and sewists who want to work quickly. Just put it on the table and it will be ready to cut your threads between seams.

It gives your used 45 mm rotary blades an extended life by converting them into a new gadget.

And it’s safe to use as the blade is very protected, so you won’t cut yourself.

7. The most convenient organizer you’ll ever find.

Quilters will LOVE this.

A beautiful and durable silicon nest organizer that you can use for your rulers, scissors, pencils…

Anything really. It also has a Slack for your phone and your pretty-looking sewing tools. Not to mention that it looks pretty cool as a decor piece.

8. Keep your scissors sharp!

This charming little scissors sharpener is designed to maintain the sharpness of your scissors, ensuring they perform optimally.

With its compact size and vibrant colors, it fits easily in any drawer or tool kit.

The user-friendly design allows for quick and efficient sharpening, prolonging the life of your favorite cutting tools and enhancing your crafting or sewing experience.

9. The perfect vacuum to clean your sewing machine.

This mini vacuum has all the accessories one can need to clean, and I mean really clean your sewing machine.

It’s a cleaner, air duster, and a hand pump that can reach all the hidden spots inside your sewing or serger machine.

No, it wasn’t made thinking of sewing machines, but once you see its attachments and the video of how it works, you will no doubt that this is the sewing gadget you need in your life.

10. Zipper Jig Slider

Have you ever lost the zipper pull while sewing?

Well, with this Jig slider, you will be able to put it back together in just a couple of movements.

The jig holds the zipper pull while you slide both tapes on it. Magic!

Works for zippers from sizes 2.5 to 10!

11. A telescoping lifesaver. Or should I say, pin saver?

This tool looks like it belongs in a hardware tool kit. But no, my friend. This is the answer to all our lost pin problems.

You may even dare to walk barefoot in your sewing room for a change.

There is actually a magnetic wand, especially to grab all those pins that drop on your floor.

But it is not nearly as good as this magnetic telescoping pick-up tool. It extends long enough so you don’t even have to get up from your chair. And when you end your sewing day, you can just swipe it over the floor to pick up any forgotten pins.

12. An accordion for buttons.

If you like even looking at buttons and buttonholes, this expanding gauge is just the thing you need.

When you extend this gauge, the points will expand at an equal distance so you can mark exactly where each button should be.

It is cheap, time-saving, and very easy to use.

13. Straight seams every time

This magnetic guide will stick on the plate of your sewing machine to help you keep your seams straight every time you sew.

Works well with most sewing machines and improves your quality every time.

Mount it on the metal throat plate and remove it or adjust it easily depending on your seam allowance.

14. Elastic Threader.

These tools are Elastic threaders.

All right, there is no point in trying to disguise this, as the package makes it pretty obvious.

Let me know if you would guess right if you knew what these are without the package.

The super cool thing about this sewing gadget is that it comes in 3 different sizes, so you can use it with the different elastic widths you work with.

15. No more sliding pedals

You know all those times you sit on your chair and are so ready to sew, but you spend all that time moving your foot to find the ever-moving pedal under your table?

Well, forget about it, because with this super amazing tool that will keep your pedal in the proper place all the time.

No more footloose.

16. Seam allowance ruler

This cute little ruler will help you measure and mark your seam allowances on the go.

You can measure from 1/8″ to 2″

11. Beewax for sewing? Yes ma’am!

Do you hate tangled threads and putting the thread in your mouth?

Well, this little product, the Beeswax conditioner, will help you each and every time you work with fine thread. Or any type of thread, really.

What you do is pass your thread through the slots of the tool, and they will get covered by the beeswax, making them more sturdy to work with.

This will also reduce the chance of missing the eye of the needle while threading.

18. An attachable light and magnifier for seam ripping time.

When I first saw this product, I thought it was some sort of robot, like Eva from Walle.

But girl, oh! Girl. When I realized this was a magnifying lamp that you can actually attach and detach so easily to any table…

Well, I just had to get one for myself. I mean, think about it. You can put it right next to your sewing machine and just pull it towards you when you need it.

Or if you are a little short-sighted like me, this comes in very handy to put in front of your sewing machine while you are sewing.

19. A trio of pointers.

This Point Turner and seam creaser do pretty much the same as the thang sticks listed above.

It’s ideal if you like detailed work and is very portable and easy to fit in your sewing box of tools.

If you see the pictures of the product, you can see that you can use it as a turner. Press the flat end on the wrong side of the fabric and hold the tool to turn your piece right where you want it to be. This works great for cuffs, like our free thumbhole cuff sewing pattern, for example.

The point will help you to make sharp corners without damaging your fabric. And can also be very useful to press seams open easily.

21. Your next cone thread’s best friend.

Buying a thread cone is a much more affordable way to save on sewing supplies, rather than buying a small spool of thread.

But using them on your sewing machine can be difficult. There are already tons of tutorials out there to hack a stand for cone threads, like putting it in a mason jar or a cup of coffee.

You won’t need those hacks. This adjustable thread spool holder is what you actually need. What we all actually need. As you can see, it has a hook at the end of the guide to pass your thread through.

This will help to keep your sewing machine thread tension consistent, unlike the cup of coffee or the mason jar.

Place it behind your machine, and you have the perfect sewing gadget for big cones of thread.

22. The best tweezers for sewing

You have probably seen this before. But when I used to walk into the sewing store and see this tool hanging on the wall next to the sewing accessories and tools… I just couldn’t figure out what the heck this was for.

I’ve never actually asked. And girl, do I regret it.

It turns out that one is a pretty awesome and simple-to-use elastic threader and the other one is a drawstring threader.

The product includes both of these tools, and the price is actually super affordable for the amazing job that they do.

23. For those long nights of hand sewing on the couch.

I initially bought this neck reading light, well… for reading. But then I started with my quilting journey, this tool became my very best friend.

Quilting and basting involve a lot of hand sewing. And I like to reserve those tasks for an evening or night watching movies in my living room.

And this neckline light just made those nights so much easier for my eyes. It is super comfortable to wear, plus it has 3 tones of color lights, and you can change the intensity as you need.

And you know… You can also use it to read the Outlander books too… Just saying.

24. Finally, an untangled bobbin organization.

These beautiful silicone mouse-shaped accessories are bobbin huggers. As the name implies, they “hug” your bobbin thread so it won’t untangle wherever you store it.

It has a super convenient shape and wonderful colors. You can fit them in your bobbin organizer case without any trouble.

Are you one of those rare breeds that actually preps and fills several bobbins with the same color thread before starting your project? This sewing gadget is for you!

And you know that little box in your sewing machine where you keep your super important tools? You can use these huggers to store your bobbin replacements there without a problem!

25. Does this threader look like a parrot to you?

Is it just me? I am totally seeing birds here!

Cute thought. But these sewing gadgets are actually automatic needle threaders. I can not stress enough the fact of how much I hate threading hand needles.

I hate putting a thread that has been in my beautiful thread displayed for who knows how long gathering dust. And I am not a fan of putting my own saliva in my sewing projects, to be honest.

There are way cheaper needle threaders. You know, those thin metal ones that break after just one use.

Do not waste your money on those! Instead, get this beautiful parrot-looking automatic threader that has a stronger hook for your needles and comes in 3 beautiful colors.

26. Have you ever wished you had a third hand while sewing?

When I saw this third-hand sewing clamp tool, I had a big internal debate about whether I should include it in this post or not.

I mean, it fits the weird sewing gadget category. But it was really useful?? In which situation will you even use this?

Apparently, it is. I went on and read the reviews of this product, and actually, it makes a lot of sense to have one of these.

These are a couple of uses you can give to this tool. You can use it to hold your fabric while you are hand sewing for darning. You can also use it near your machine to hold and stretch your fabric to fit the ease of sleeves or neckbands.

Also, and this is a good one, to hold your fabric while you are seam ripping!!

27. Jean-A-Ma-Jig

I have absolutely no idea what Jean-a-ma-jig means. I even tried to google it with no success.

What I do know is that this little weird-looking rectangle sewing tool is the greatest helper to have near your sewing machine at all times.

This tool helps you sew over bulky seams of thick fabrics (such as jeans hems) without sweat. Gone are the days of fighting with your machine, trying to sew over a bump of fabric, and getting your needle stuck or broken.

Place this tool under your sewing foot, aligning the slot so the needle can pass through, and it will help you to sew quickly, easily, and without the need to stop or move things around.

28. Thread cutter ring. At the reach of your fingers.

Who needs a wedding ring when you can have a thread cutter ring? Just kidding, I totally want a wedding ring (can someone marry me? Please).

Joking aside, how convenient is this? By wearing this amazing tool in your hand, you won’t have the need to go nuts trying to find where you put your shirring scissors every time you move around your sewing room.

It’s adjustable, so you can use it on every finger you want. Plus… Come on! How pretty is it?

29. Automatic Bobbin Winder.

Oh yes my friend, I saved the best for last.

An automatic bobbin winder is exactly what everyone of us needs besides our sewing machines all the time.

Prep ahead and wind as many bobbins as you need without having to unthread your machine and step on your pedal.

Check out how this amazing sewing gadget (well, more of a tool) works in the video description of the product!

Bonus: Do not buy this sewing gadget!!

At first sight, you will find the 6 in 1 guide to be a very attractive and interesting tool. But if you actually pay attention to the video tutorial in the product description on how to use this product, you’ll find that it is completely unnecessary.

This sewing gadget is supposed to help you do 6 different sewing functions more easily.

However, if you watch the video closely, it doesn’t seem particularly helpful or necessary for the things it’s supposed to assist with.

So, my humble advice on this one will be to save your money.

I hope you enjoyed this post about weird gadgets. Do you know any other weird sewing gadgets that should be included in this list?? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. For your #19, the third hand, I did buy one of those, I bought a vintage one
Solid Brass Replica Victorian Bird Sewing Clamp Pincushion, on Amazon, it comes in handy when I need to fold my fabric and I need an extra hand, or if I am unpicking something and I need some tension somewhere. I have used it many times.
Pluse, it is very classy looking.

  2. Any updates? I ran across this a few years ago, and agree with most things you say, though I still swear by my very narrow chopsticks for pointing my corners. LOL. Barring that, I agree with all your recommendations. There is one gadget that I didn’t see, that I recently purchased and tried out. I don’t remember what they call it, but it is magnetic, sticks on the soleplate of your sewing machine, and helps to keep your seams straight. Unfortunately for me, the soleplate on my sewing maching doesn’t have enough metal in the right place for it to be effective for me. Great idea, though, if your soleplate has more metal. Very strong magnet, so it WOULD work for other machines!

  3. Dafhtne,
You are amazing, wonderful and a crazy smart lady. It looks like I’m a little late to this party but I just found you. I have a Thang, it’s OK, but I got the telescoping magnet WITH A LIGHT. I will proofread your articles for free if you still need it.

  4. Funny you should put a “DO NOT BUY” on the last one. I did buy a very long time ago and you are right, it does not do the job of keeping seams straight and the rest. The material slips under the object leaving you with uneven seams.
