They say that sewing and buying fabric and notions are two different hobbies.
Well, they are right.
We, seamstresses and crafters, find amazing joy in buying beautiful fabrics and cool pretty tools.
Is part of the deal when you start this journey!
But unfortunately, this activity can also lead us to a very huge disorder and clutter.
If we want to have the perfect Sewing Room Plan to create our garments, sewing projects, and crafts, we must maintain some order.
At least to know and be able to see what we actually own.
I don’t know about you, but I have often bought the same material twice because I forgot I already own it.
Has that ever happened to you?
That’s why today I am going to give you a bunch of options and ideas for you to organize and store your fabrics, crafts, and sewing supplies.
Sewing Room Storing and Shelving Ideas
- Fabrics
- Sewing Tools
- Notions and Supplies
- Sewing Patterns
1. Organize Fabrics
Let’s start with the most valuable and pretty items in our sewing rooms.
The fabrics.
There are a lot of options you can get to organize your fabrics. The ideal option is to get something where you can visualize all your fabrics at once.

You can organize them by color or fabric type. Plus, you can place fabric cubes or fabric diy boxes if you want to hide some special materials.
Hidden Cubes Storage
If you rather have your fabrics hidden and protect them from the sun and dust, you might want to opt in for a cube organizer with doors.

4. Thread Organization
Threads are as important to us as fabrics.
And they are equally large in terms of quantity. But they are used a little bit more than fabrics.
That’s why you should have them at hand and preferably on a very pretty display.

I am placing this option as my number one because this is the exact item that I use to hold my standard-size threads.

4. Sewing Patterns Organization
Along with our fabrics, our PDF Sewing Patterns are our most valuable sewing possessions.
Finding a good way to organize your sewing patterns by categories is a must for an organized sewing plan.
Here are some options for you to store your patterns.
Magazine Organizer
A very clean way to organize your sewing patterns is to categorize them by categories in magazine organizers.
First, place your sewing patterns inside free pattern card to put the information of each pattern on top of them.
If you don’t feel like buying them, you can make your own magazine organizer with cereal boxes.
You can tag each one of them with the category of your pattern. Use our free printable pattern labels to do it.
File Pocket Organizer
- Includes 1 legal size (15″ W x 10″ H) expanding file box featuring 19 pockets with blank tabs, plus alphabetic (A-Z) and subject labels for organizing, storing and transporting important files
- Each pocket features a sturdy divider with tab and expands to 7/8” for ample storage capacity, making this expanding file ideal for filing and organizing large amounts of paperwork
- Full-height gussets are reinforced with poly tape at the top for increased durability, plus heavy-duty printed board keeps documents intact when you’re on the go
If you want an option that takes less space and that you can store hidden in a shelve or closet, a file pocket organizer is the best choice.
If you have a lot of sewing patterns, you can get one for each category.
File Box Organizer
- LINEN FILE ORGANIZER WITH LID: The linen file organizer is the perfect storage box to store all important documents, folders and paperwork while still providing a soft accent to the room/office with its decorative design
- LETTER or LEGAL FILES: The storage organizer may fit both letter and legal-size files/paperwork fitting your unique filing system.
- COLLAPSIBLE FILING BOX: The storage container collapses down simply for easier storage when not in use
This is an amazing option and a very organized one. The best thing is that this file box organizer can fit on your cube-shelved furniture.
It has a space for you to label each pattern category, and it comes in 3 pretty colors.
I hope you like these options and that this post helped and inspired you to organize your sewing room with a dash of your own style.

Don’t forget about using the walls when organizing, incorporating command hooks or basic nails, picture holders, etc. There has to be something besides the pegboard (every organizer’s suggestion) to handle cutting mats, rulers, and such. I also use the sides of cabinets, dressers, and bookcases! The over the door organizers are so versatile as well!
Everything is useful!! Absolutely. I am not a fan of pegboards, but I am thinking about adding one for the practicallity.
I have a peg board
which holds my long rulers with hooks on elastic
my entire collection of scissors and cutters
a bag when I do a batch of baby clips for donation to the cancer ward
2–4 clips for notes to myself, so I don’t forget
very useful tool for knowing exactly where things are and easy to reach & return
Omg That sounds really smart! I’d love to see it, would you mind sharing it with us at our Sewing Club?
My sewing room is 7 feet by 9 feet. It doubles as my office as well. 2 shelves on the metal brackets you find at hardware stores hold small plastic totes picked up from thrift stores. 1 is dedicated to zippers of all sizes. Another to miscellaneous “antique” fabrics from my grandmother. The rest hold my smaller pieces for the quilts I make. The lower shelf has my thrift store thread cones, big jars of buttons, tiny and small spools of threads, and more fabric squares for jeans quilts. 4 two drawer file cabinets hold large fabric pieces, upholstery hardware, office supplies, crafting supplies, patterns, ribbons, Velcro and other sewing accessories (feet, machine needles, snaps, etc). One set of file cabinets supports a hollow core door (from ReStore) that i wrapped in a thick clear plastic shower curtain. It’s my work desk/ crafting table, project planner space. On the other wall is the other 2 file cabinets with a piece of plywood “harvested” from a remodel tear out on top. My sewing machine, bobbins, commonly used threads, pins and power strip are on it. 2 short shelves over the machine hold a radio/CD player, clamp lamp, and misc office supplies. 2 cork boards and one old cookie sheet with magnets hold current and future project ideas. One rolling office chair that basically swivels fill the tight space. Even “Debbie “ the dress form fits!
I can almost picture your sewing room organization! These are magnificent tips!! Thank you so much for sharing this ideas with us.
I use quite a lot of your ideas to organize. I like to buy fancy candy jars at christmas. Some are large enough to use for storage. I have one that is holding about 200 handmade yo-yos. Don’t know what I will do with them yet, but someday…
I also followed the directions of a fellow internet crafter to make my own shelving unit out of large “milk crates”. I bought mine at Target as the Dollar Tree, which was recommended, didn’t have any. Tie them together with tie wraps and paint them whatever color you want. They are great. They also hold a lot.
I’m sorry that I can’t give the original poster’s name as I have forgotten it. I do thank her though.
To organize within the shelves, I made several fabric “baskets”. The range in size so I can put various things in them. Some are the perfect size to hold fat quarters. Organize by color. Thank you for your great suggestions too.
Hey April! Those things sound so great!!
Would you like sharing your set up with our readers? We can feature this ideas to help others!
I’d love to show you my pegboard I have in my sewing room. I just don’t know if I can upload a picture. But your ideas are great. I use most of them already.
Absolutely!! You can’t upload pictures here on the blog, but you can share them at My Golden Thimble Sewing Club in facebook!!
Some good but very basic ideas presented but please before posting use your spell checker! Many words are misspelled.
Thank you so much! I just did a check-up on this one. And I am going through my articles to upgrade them little by little.
I’ve been reorganizing my room for months. Have learned that large shelves do not help without smaller organizers. Thanks for these ideas. Had a few of my own but these additions are terrific.
Thanks for commenting Kit! I would love to read your ideas. The cleaning and organizing in a sewing room literally never ends.
what a great idea i cannot wait to start looking forward to it
