Because I am getting a new Sewing Room!!

The family is moving to a new house and I am finally going to get my permanent Sewing Room. (We were renting before).

I can’t express the happiness I feel to own (really own) my own space.

I do have had sewing space all my life. But nothing I could really do much about it.

The first one was my (and my sister’s) bedroom. Next, was a rental apartment room that I wasn’t allowed to paint, install or redecorate.

But now I get my own Craft Room! In my own house!!

And let me tell ya something: I am determined to make this room the happiest of the happy places on earth.

 Planning My Sewing Rooms Decoration

Gotta tell you this upfront. I am NOT an .. interior designer.

This won’t be a guide of a professional decorator person. What I am though, is an auto-claimed terrific Fashion Designer. So, on the next couple of months, I will be sharing with you the whole process, I am going to take to build the perfect Sewing Room.

And I want to do it on such a way, that you can take and follow my steps and apply them to your own sewing Room decorations.

Why?

Simply because this is such a great moment for me, and of course, I wanted you to be part of it.

Also because I know if you are reading this, you have a Sewing Room and you are probably thinking on ideas or inspiration to decor it.

So I know you are going to love this Sewing Room Decoration Series.

Getting the main inspiration: How to make a Mood board and Color Palette.

The first thing you have to do to put your sewing room ideas in action is to create an inspiration and color boards. This will help you to layout the design of your craft room on a simple way and choose the best decorations for it. What is a mood board?

Our trusting friend Wikipedia defines a mood board like “a type of collage consisting of images, text, and samples of objects in a composition. […] A mood board can be used to give a general idea of a topic, or to show how different something is from the modern day.”

There are a lot of different techniques to make a Mood Board or and Inspiration board. And the best thing is that you can literally choose anyone you like. Do the one that catches your eye and inspires you.

Today I want to show you the way I usually make them when I design collections of clothes. And now I am going to try and apply it to my Sewing Room Decorations.

Choose a Theme that inspires you.

On the next section I will show you how I choose my Sewing Room Decoration’s theme so it would align with the feeling of happiness I was looking for.

Choosing a theme for your Mood Board is important. A mood board should show the main feeling for the idea you want to work with as well as the color palette in a broad way. The first thing you need is a Topic/Theme that you want to be inspired by.

Then start gathering pictures for your board. What you need to do is go to your browser and look for that idea in the picture section. For example…

You can also look for words, places or things that in your mind are related to those feelings. Like…

Note: I know that to this point you don’t have defined your color palette. And that is Ok because we are going to define that later.

But I do want you to try and look on the pictures you select the colors that align with your theme or feeling.

Look for some color harmony but don’t stress too much about it yet. And start saving all the pictures you feel like give you the creative juices flowing.

 My Sewing Room’s Inspiration Board

Before I even think of putting a specific word into the browser I have to think of the feelings I want to put in certain design.

As I told you before my main idea for my Sewing Room decorations is Happy. Now that I have this word, I start writing words that are related to that feeling.

First I’ll write a list of the words I know I want for my room.

  • Happy
  • Colorful
  • Bright
  • Fun
  • Mix & Match
  • Young
  • Original

Now I am going to look at my words and think of a theme that IN MY OPINION is related with these words.

Here is a sort of time line-process my brain goes trought with these words…

“Happy: Smiles, joy, people having fun, laugher… Colorful: Sprinkles, ice cream (oh yeah we have something here), sweet, solid colors, pastel tones, bright colors, stripes, dots… Fun: unique weird+funny things, jokes, unusual, smiles, friends… Young: girl, water, pool party, dance, jump… Original: eye-catching, weird, unique, novelty, decor…”

How I Translate those words/feelings to the Theme and Moodboard

All righty. that before was literally what my brain does when I am looking for the right theme to be inspired on. Did you happened to catch the bold words in the middle??

>>>>ICE CREAM!!<<<<<

Ice Cream is fun! It bring back memories from a happy childhood or a sweet date with my bae. It also has great bright colors I can use to be inspired by.

When I thought of Ice Cream, the first thing popping into my mind were those vintage trucks. The ones with the nice teal and pink colors. So I keept that mental picture in my mind.

And from here the only thing left is going to the browser and start collecting images so I can make a Moodboard.

I usually make my mood boards with Photoshop or Illustrator but I wanted to link you to a couple of tutorials that I’ve seen that can be very useful, and potentially easier to make your mood boards:

How to make the Color Pallete

As you can see I’ve already added the Color Pallete for the Mood board by selecting the most relevant colors of the picture and putting them on the base of the board.

But you can also use online free tools like Canva Color Pallete, where you can upload your picture and it will throw you the proper color palette for it along with the name and codes for those colors.

Even if you have one single picture that strikes that inspiration on you. Put it in this free software you will end with an awesome Inspiration Board rigth here.

How to make a color board with canva color pallete. This is a great way to keep your sewing room decorations and ideas on a scheme and theme of your choosing.

Color Palletes help us to stay on track on all of our Sewing Rooms Decorations…

For example if I where to see a beautiful vintage black and bronce sewing clock theme I would have to say NO-NO.

Because it won’t have anything to do with my theme and mood. And you want a cohesive decorations so. You will need to stay true to your color pallete.

Ok… I have my Inspiration Board and Color Pallete… Now what?

Awesome you and I both have the very first step to have the best Sewing Room decor ever.

  1. I’m really inspired by this article! Perfect timing. Just got my room yesterday. Nothing organized. And now I will paint, instead of leaving white walls. I chose coral and yellow. The yellow will have a bit more brightness and the coral soft. I will eventually find a place for everything. Than you!

  2. I’m an empty nester who is now retired as well. I’m taking over our family room that once the kids hang out as my new and much larger sewing room than any little corner I could find to sew in in the past! I look forward to your help as I venture forth in my journey of creating the perfect me space.

  4. I’ve been blessed with a few sewing rooms in my life. Right now I’m living with my daughter and her family and they are making me a little apartment in their walk out basement. I’ll have a bedroom /sewing room there. And it will be nice to have my own space even if it’s smaller than my other sewing rooms. I’m going to have my walls in the sewing room painted white so having colors there won’t interfere with my projects. But if I had separate rooms I’d have painted something purple! That’s my favorite color. I enjoyed your article.

    • Hi Beverly, I am very happy that you are getting a new sewing room. It’s the best to start fresh and put everything piece of decor and color as you want. Purple sounds lovely!! I would love to see it if you do.

  5. Wow! I’m so jealous. I’d love to have a room just for my sewing/crafting. For me, I’ve always wanted a lavender room and so I”d probably key a craft room off that color. Too, I’m a solo female in a male household, so would love the chance to have a room that’s feminine and all about me – think, pastels and comfort, with supplies neatly organized where I can get to them quickly.
