I used to be a pants and jeans girl.

Don’t ask me why. But I truly never felt that comfortable in skirts when I was growing up.

But now… I have finally decided that my pants era is officially over, and my Skirt Era is finally at its peak!

I have made so many skirts in the past few years, and I think that I still need even more. Finally, I have no excuse for needing pants in summer again.

Out of the many gorgeous free patterns I found for you, some of my favorites this year are the tiered skirt and wrap skirt patterns.

Of course, every season has new designs coming in, that is why I want you to save this post on Pinterest or in Grow (the little heart at the corner of the screen) because I will be constantly updating this list so it always has the most trendy free skirt patterns for sewing.

What type of skirt will flatter me the most?

To find which skirt is better for your body, you first have to know your body shape and the different types of skirts that flatter you the best.

As I have always told you, everybody is different, and what may work for you may not work for another person. The important thing is that even if you follow any fashion or styling advice, like the one about body shapes, you stay true to your own taste.

At the end of the day, you can follow some tips, but please always wear what makes YOU feel pretty and comfortable.

How much and which fabric do I need for a skirt?

Here are rough estimates for fabric consumption for each type of skirt:

  1. A-Line Skirt:
    • Knee-length: 1.5 to 2 yards (1.4 to 1.8 meters) of 45-inch-wide fabric.
    • Midi-length: 2 to 2.5 yards (1.8 to 2.3 meters) of 45-inch-wide fabric.
    • Maxi-length: 3 to 4 yards (2.7 to 3.7 meters) of 45-inch-wide fabric.
  2. Half-Circle Skirt:
    • Knee-length: 2 to 2.5 yards (1.8 to 2.3 meters) of 45-inch-wide fabric.
    • Midi-length: 2.5 to 3 yards (2.3 to 2.7 meters) of 45-inch-wide fabric.
    • Maxi-length: 3.5 to 4.5 yards (3.2 to 4.1 meters) of 45-inch-wide fabric.
  3. Tiered Skirt:
    • Tiered skirt fabric requirements vary based on the number of tiers, width, and gathering.
    • As a rough estimate, you might need 1.5 times the fabric required for a basic A-line skirt, depending on the number and fullness of tiers.

As for the type of fabrics for your skirts, I want to recommend this post that talks about the best materials for dresses. You can use the same principles for these skirts.

Each tutorial will tell you whether to use a woven fabric or a knit fabric.
