25 Denim Crafts to Make With Old Jeans

Making denim crafts is one of my favorite ways to give old clothes a second life.

If you have a pair of jeans that is too worn out to wear, no longer fits, or has been sitting in your closet waiting for its next purpose, don’t throw it away just yet!

And you don’t necessarily need a whole pair of jeans for these projects.

Pockets, waistbands, hems, and even those little scraps left over after cutting can become useful materials for your next DIY.

Before you grab your scissors, here are a few tips that will make working with old denim much easier.

Tips for Upcycling Old Jeans

1. Wash and inspect your jeans first

Give your old jeans a good pre-wash (just as you would pre-wash fabric before sewing) and let them dry completely before cutting them apart. This is especially important if you’re planning to use the denim for something washable later.

Take a moment to check for stains, thinning areas, holes, and especially the seams.

2. Use a hair trimmer to unstitch denim seams

This is one of my favorite little tricks when taking apart old jeans. A small hair trimmer can make removing bulky denim seams much faster.

Instead of fighting with every individual thread using a seam ripper, carefully run the trimmer along the seam to cut through the stitching.

Just be careful not to press too hard, especially if you want to keep the denim underneath intact.

I still recommend using a seam ripper for areas where you need more precision, but for long, sturdy jean seams, this trick can save you a surprising amount of time.

3. Keep the original details

Before cutting everything into flat pieces, look at what you already have. Jean pockets, belt loops, waistbands, hems, rivets, and contrast stitching can all become part of your finished project.

Sometimes keeping one of these original details makes an upcycled project look much more intentional—and saves you some sewing work too!

4. Use the right needle

Denim is thick, especially when you’re sewing through several layers. For sewing projects, use a denim or jeans needle and choose a size appropriate for the thickness of your fabric.

If your machine struggles when crossing bulky seams, slow down and use the hand wheel when necessary rather than forcing the fabric through.
