Felt Spider Web Placemats & Coasters DIY

These felt spider web placemats were one of those little Halloween crafts that I started making without really knowing how cute they were going to turn out.

For this project, I am giving you the free pattern and SVG template, so you can either cut the spider webs by hand or use your Cricut machine to make the process even faster.

They are perfect for a Halloween table, a spooky little dinner party, or just adding some handmade Halloween decorations around your home.

So grab some felt, and let’s make some spider webs.

If you are having a little déjà vu right now, there is a very good reason for it. I have already made a fabric spider web placemats and coasters set before, complete with a sewing pattern.

I still love that version, but this time I wanted to see what would happen if I gave the idea a little craft upgrade and made it as easy as possible.

And by easy, I mean you don’t even need to turn on your sewing machine.

I wanted something pretty for my fall and Halloween decorations, but I also wanted a project that was super quick, super easy, and required absolutely no sewing. And well… I think I may have found a winner.

I am always a fan of having more than one option for the same decoration, especially when one of them takes almost no time to make.

Notes on The Materials and Supplies

Before you start cutting, there is one thing I really want you to pay attention to: the felt matters a lot for this project.

I strongly recommend using thick felt for these spider web placemats. Please don’t reach for those little thin felt sheets that usually come in a pack of assorted colors. Those are just too thin for what we are trying to do here.

The thicker the felt you can find, the better. I will list some good options for you below because these are meant to be actual placemats. You want them to be sturdy enough to hold your plates, help protect your table from heat and scratches, and, just as importantly, keep their beautiful spider web shape while they are sitting on your table.

Thin felt is going to give you trouble here. If there is a little bit of air underneath it, it can start to curl and bend very easily. And trust me, the last thing we want is to end up with a bowl-shaped piece of felt sitting underneath our dinner plate instead of a beautiful spider web placemat.

About the files

Cricut Machine

Now, do you need a Cricut machine for this project? No. But do I think it is the easiest way to get these spider webs looking really clean? Absolutely.

I have been using my Cricut for several projects now, and it has become one of those tools that I reach for whenever I have a design with lots of little details to cut.

I even used it for the Halloween felt garland I made for my Halloween party last year, so it has definitely been getting its Halloween workout around here.

You can certainly try cutting these by hand, but let’s be honest: whose pulse is that good? This design has so many little nooks and holes, and getting every single one perfectly cut with scissors would test my patience very quickly.

That said, it is completely up to you. I am providing the PDF pattern as well, so you can print it, trace it onto your felt, and cut your spider webs by hand if you don’t have a Cricut.

About The Spider Web Templates

And finally, you will need the felt spider web template. I designed this one especially for this project.

And I am giving you all of the files you need right here on the product page.

You will find the SVG template for Cricut as well as the printable PDF pattern for cutting by hand.

The files also come in different sizes because I wanted you to have a little flexibility depending on what you are making.

There is one important thing to know about the sizes: the PDF includes a larger spider web size. With Cricut, you are limited by the size of the cutting mat. That means you can cut up to about 12 inches wide on a standard 12 x 12-inch mat.

But a placemat can be larger than that, especially if you want to use it underneath a big dinner plate. That’s why you have the option to make a larger felt spider web placemat by cutting the PDF pattern by hand.

You can find all of these files on the product page here.

Now that we have our supplies ready, let’s make these little spider webs!

Once you have your template and felt ready, the actual making part goes very quickly. There is no sewing, no complicated construction, and no need to spend your entire afternoon cutting tiny pieces of fabric.

1. Download the Spider Web Template

The first thing you will need is the spider web template for this project.

I designed this pattern in both PDF and SVG formats. A Cricut option is included, so you can choose the method that works best for you.

The pattern comes with several different files and sizes for the different ways you may want to use it, and I explain exactly what is included on the product page.

I wanted to keep this pattern really affordable! So you can grab the files at only $2.99 and start making your Halloween decorations right away without having to spend a fortune on a template.

Once you have your files, decide how you are going to cut your spider webs. Use your Cricut or cut by hand, and let’s get cutting.

2. Cut the Spider Webs From Felt

This is where having a Cricut makes things very convenient.

The spider web has quite a few little openings and curves, so a cutting machine will give you much cleaner and more consistent results than trying to navigate every tiny corner with a pair of scissors.

Using the SVG With Cricut (Best Option)

To cut with your Cricut Machine, open Cricut Design Space and upload the SVG file included with your pattern.

Once the design is uploaded, add it to your canvas and check the dimensions before cutting.

Because a standard Cricut cutting mat is limited to 12 inches in width, remember that you may need to use the larger PDF pattern for the biggest placemat size and cut that one by hand.

The SVG files are designed to work within the cutting area available on your Cricut mat.

Cricut settings for cutting out the placemats an coasters

Place your thick felt on your cutting mat and make sure it is firmly secured. Felt can shift while being cut, and the last thing we want is for your spider web to start wandering around halfway through its haircut.

In Cricut Design Space, choose the material setting that matches the type and thickness of your felt. If your machine offers a felt-specific setting, that is a good place to start.

Use the appropriate blade recommended by Cricut for your machine and material, and if you are unsure, I strongly recommend doing a small test cut first.

Hands peeling felt out of the cricut mat

This is especially important because felt comes in many different thicknesses and compositions. A setting that works beautifully on one felt may be too light for another or unnecessarily aggressive on a thinner one.

Once everything looks good, send the design to your Cricut and let it do its thing.

And then simply repeat the cut for as many placemats and coasters as you need. If you are making a table setting for four people, for example, cut four large spider webs for the placemats and as many smaller webs as you want for your coasters.

Cutting the PDF Pattern by Hand (More Time Consuming)

If you don’t have a Cricut, don’t worry. You can absolutely make these by hand.

Print the PDF pattern at the correct size and use it as your cutting template. Place it over your felt and carefully mark or trace the design before cutting.

For the cleanest results, I recommend using sharp fabric scissors or small, sharp craft scissors. The smaller scissors can make it much easier to navigate all those little openings in the spider web.

There is also a little trick you can use if your felt is moving around or making the cutting process annoying: the Freezer Paper Method can be used by placing freezer paper on the back of the felt before cutting. This gives the felt more structure and can make those little detailed cuts much easier to handle.

Just make sure the product you choose is appropriate for your particular felt and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for applying it. After cutting, you can carefully remove the stabilizer if the product allows for it.

And again, remember that you will need to repeat the pattern for however many places you are decorating.

Four guests? Make four placemats. Hosting a whole Halloween dinner?

Keep cutting until you have enough for everyone. And if you want matching coasters, make a few smaller spider webs while you’re already in cutting mode.

A Quick Alternative: Make the Fabric Version

If you love the spider web idea but would rather make something you can actually sew, I have another version of this project for you.

You can check out my Spider Web Placemats and Coasters sewing pattern, where I made the design using fabric instead of felt.

It is a completely different way to get the same spooky-cute look, and honestly, I love having both versions to use throughout the Halloween season.
