How to Sew a Sock Monkey. Free Sewing Pattern and Tutorial.

If you have a lot of old socks, this tutorial on making a Sock Monkey Free Sewing Pattern is for you.

I love wearing socks of all lengths and sizes. But eventually, those socks wear out or get some holes. 

As much as I like to mend my clothes, I use worn socks for a whole new different project—for example, this adorable stuffed toy of a Sock Monkey Pattern.

I think I have about every type of sock on the market. 

All the lengths, colors, and materials. Formal, funny, sassy, elegant, etc.

But with great sock power comes great sock responsibility. There is a time for all of them to go to a better life.

And when I say better life, I mean an upcycled life.

Today was that time for my long colorful socks. 

And while I was thinking about what to do with them, I saw my dog trying to sneak into my sock drawer.

She loves to play with my socks, you see…

So I said to myself that she needed a cute sock toy! And that’s how I came into the Sock Monkey Sewing Pattern.

So, after a bit of way searching on Pinterest for some DIY tutorials to upcycle socks, I stumbled across this cute toy design.

Now I have learned how to make a sock monkey. I am going to teach you how to make yours as well.

You will only need two old socks, a sewing machine, and stuffing or fabric scraps.

How do you make a Sock Monkey Pattern?

To make a Sock Monkey, you need a pair of long socks. On one of them, you will trace the legs of the monkey, and on the second one, you will draw the arms, the tail, and the ears.

There is no need for a paper pattern at all. 

You can draw it directly on the fabric, then sew it, cut it and start joining the pieces.

What can I use to make a sock monkey if I don’t have a sock?

If you don’t have long socks that you can recycle, you can use scraps of fabric or any garment that you no longer use.

Just trace the pattern pieces from this tutorial to give the shape of a sock monkey without using socks.

My recommendation is to choose any fabric with a bit of stretch on it.

What do you need to make a Sock Monkey?

To make a Sock Monkey Free Sewing Pattern you need very few materials.

• Long socks
• Sewing Scissors
• Thread
• A hand needle
• Craft filling
• Marker
• Pins or Sewing Clips

How to Make a Sock Monkey Free Sewing Pattern and Tutorial.

1. Draft the patterns

Draft the patterns.

To do this project, you only need to make significant, narrow “u” shapes for the arms, the tail, and the legs of the Monkey.

Remember that depending on the length of your sock, you can adapt the size of your patterns.

You can draft it directly on the sock or draw it on paper, so every piece has the perfect shape.

Draw two long “U’s” for the arms, two legs, a tail as long as your sock, and two small “u’s” for the ears.

2. Turn and press

Turn your socks inside out.

Leave their wrong side exposed and press the socks as shown in the picture.

This will make it easier to trace the pattern. 

Remember to use water or steam when ironing to make a good press.

3. Trace the patterns

With the help of a marker, draw the corresponding patterns on each sock.

One sock is for the legs, and the other sock is for the arms, tail, and ears.

You can modify the length of the pattern if your sock is longer.

4. Sew on the sock

Use the lines you made as a guide to sew the sock.

Be very careful because the lines can be too close if your sock is not as big as mine.

I have a great hack on sewing knit fabrics without puckering if you have any trouble sewing your knitted sock.

5. Cut the pieces

Cut the sock pieces as shown in the picture leave a seam allowance of about ⅛”.

Be very careful not to get to the seam!

The sock where we drew the legs is actually the entire monkey’s body. 

So, be careful to draw the legs just at the sides of the center of the heel. In this case, the heal will be the monkey’s butt.

The legs should be joined with an inverted “U,” which we will not sew just yet.

6. Turn inside out and stuff the pieces

After cutting the pieces, you have to turn them inside out.

Help yourself with a wooden stick because the pieces are very small and long.

Then you have to stuff them abundantly. 

As a green-friendly tip, you can also reuse stuffing from another stuffed animal, a pillow, or some fleece you have, as we did in our easter eggs tutorial.

7. Put the pieces together

Use as many pins as you need to pin the body parts to the monkey’s body.

I started with the arms, then the tail, and finally the ears.

8. Form the mouth

To form the mouth of the monkey, we need the end part of a sock, where our toes go.

Cut it, stuff it, and pin it to the face of the monkey.

Join all the pieces with small invisible stitches to make them stay in place.

9. Close the Monkey’s body

Finally, close the bottom part of the Monkey’s body. Between the legs.

You can also use an invisible stitch so the seam won’t be visible on the outside like mine does.

10. Make the eyes.

I added some eyes with a piece of fabric, just make a B shape and two circles on light and black fabric.

There are a few ways to make eyes for stuffed animals.

But you are free to imagine the eyes you want to add or get some eyes for toys on Amazon.

Another option is to add some tiny pompoms as the eyes. You can see our tutorial on making pompoms with a fork.

The great thing about this Sock Monkey Free Pattern and Tutorial is that you can make as many styles and colors as your sock drawer allow you to.
