This Fabric Egg Pattern will change the way you do Easter from now on.

The activities of the Easter Day festivities are so wholesome and leave us with so many good memories.

This day is perfect for creativity, from the egg hunt to the party decorations.

Even though I am an adult, the game of an egg hunt is pretty exciting for me. I love to play along with my nephews and nieces.

And this year, I will make the eggs with fabric instead of natural or plastic shells!!

I think it is a great idea, and somehow it makes it safer and eco-friendly.

Hey, I will use them to decorate my home before, after, and during the party!

I decided to do a recycling project with my fabric scraps this easter.

Because you know, I don’t like to throw anything away. And in projects like this, the fabric scraps are perfect.

I just have so many of them and haven’t been using them at all this past year.

And what better to do that than making some scrap fabric easter eggs for this special day?

But hey! Do you know where the Easter Eggs come from??

What is the meaning of the Easter Egg?

Easter eggs represent fertility and the beginning of life.

This tradition began because of the Catholic Church’s rule on easter days.

And the rule was that, during those days, Christians should not eat meat, eggs, or dairy.

So, the eggs that weren’t used during that time were painted and gifted when the celebration ended.

People used to decorate with festive colors or natural dyes to celebrate that Jesus Christ was reborn. It was a time to stop the fast and celebrate.

The egg hunt tradition is quite popular in countries from Central Europe, England, and America.

The easter eggs are also the symbol of the Spring Season. The fields begin to green; the animals start to reproduce…

So, there is no doubt why the easter egg is so associated with the hope of soil fertility and a good harvest.

Nowadays, the Easter egg can be found in many presentations such as chocolate, plastic, and even metal or ceramic as decorations.

And, of course, fabric like the ones we are making here.

Why do the Easter Bunny hands out eggs?

Both eggs and the bunny are considered symbols of life and fertility. 

The egg, for example, represents the beginning of life, while the rabbit is an animal prized for its great reproductive capacity.

In today’s tradition, the Easter bunny is in charge of bringing the eggs, just like Santa Claus brings the presents at Christmas.

With the difference that he hides them all over the house for the children to find and have fun with.

How to make recycled fabric easter eggs?

Follow these steps to make your own Easter eggs.

1. Gather your materials

• Fabric scraps 
• Sewing Scissors
• Pins
• Fusible Interfacing
• Craft Filling
• Fabric Eggs Sewing Pattern (get the instant download three eggs sizes sewing pattern here, or scroll down at the bottom of the post for the free-one-size pattern)

2. Cut the pattern pieces of the fabric egg pattern

Print your sewing pattern and cut the pieces.

Choose the size you want to use and cut 4 different pieces of the same size. We recommend you use different colors and fabric prints. If you use scraps, you can combine them in many ways.

Make sure to mark the top and the bottom on each fabric piece.

Transfer the notches.

3. Press Fusible Interfacing

With the help of the iron, add a fusible interfacing layer on each of the pieces.

Make sure to arrange all the pieces you will use, so you don’t waste too much fusible interfacing.

We like to use this medium-weight fusible interfacing for all the craft projects we make.

4. Pin the sides of the pieces together

Take two layers of the pieces and match the tops, the bottoms, and the side notches.

Remember that one of the ends of the pattern pieces is wider, so it has a more realistic egg shape.

If you don’t like to use pins, sewing clips are also a great option to keep your fabrics together.

Repeat with the other two pieces.

5. Sew the sides together

Sew piece by piece at ¼” until they are completely joined at the sides.

Press the seams.

Once you have two halves of the egg, join the remaining sides.

Remember to leave an open space of at least ¾” so we can turn the piece inside out and insert the filling.

Don’t forget to make a back-stitch at the beginning and the end of each seam!

That way, you won’t risk your seams getting opened.

6. Cut corners and make notches.

Make small cuts on the seam allowances of the egg.

Do not cut too near to your stitches.

The notches will help the curves of our project to look smother once we turn the piece inside out.

7. Turn and press.

Turn the piece to the right side and press each seam to make a more beautiful shape of the fabric egg pattern.

Remember to use water or steam when you press to get a better finish.

8. Fill the egg

Start filling your egg with the filling of your choice.

You can use the classic craft filling or just use more scraps as we did!

Using small fabric scraps can save you a lot of money, and it’s more eco-friendly.

Don’t worry because they look pretty both ways.

But of course, if you have the opportunity, recycle some stuff.

9. Close the open seam

Once the egg is filled, close it with small invisible stitches.

And that’s it! You can make as many Easter eggs as you want!
