This project, though relatively simple, needs a lot of straight stitches. You can download our Sewing Practice Sheets if you need help getting perfectly straight stitches. You can do a couple of practices before sewing your quilt for the mug rug.

Now, if you have never made a quilt before, make sure to read at least one tutorial about how to quilt fabric easily.

Finally, we will finish this sewing project with homemade bias tape because sewing bias tape on the edge of our projects is way easier than turning them inside out.

What are mug rugs for?

Mug rugs are a kit of cute fabric mats that goes under your cups or cattle pots to avoid leaving cup rings on your surfaces.

They also act as an insulator protecting from very high or low temperatures, which causes a glass to “sweat” and drop humidity. This is important to keep things clean and not ruin delicate table materials such as wood.

The other non-practical use is to use it as a decoration.

What kind of batting should I use to make a Mug Rug?

We recommend using 100% cotton batting. This type of batting will make it heat resistant by also giving it a great body to handle.

We should consider that this will make our project considerably thicker, so we need to use the appropriate needle size.

What size should a Mug Rug be?

The standard size of a mug rug varies between 4” by 4” and 6” by 6”. As for the size of a Pot rug can be anything starting from 8” by 8”.

Of course, everything depends on the size of your mugs and pots. My tea set is way smaller than my coffee set. So check if you need to customize the size if you need to.

For the heart mug rug patterns, you will need 36 squares of 2” by 2”.

Each rug needs 9 squares total. This will make 4 mug rugs.

As for the pot rug, you will need 25 squares of 2” by 2” total.

Lay these squares to decide their position depending on the number of colors and prints you are working with.

Pin 3 columns of squares at a time, and sew them at ¼”—press seams towards one side.

Repeat this step with all the columns.

Make a sandwich with your quilted fabric square, the batting, and the backing fabric.

Pin everything together and sew a straight stitch following the seams of the inner square’s lines.

Then make a basting stitch of ⅛” at the edge of each heart to hold the 3 layers of the fabrics together.

How to perfectly sew Bias Tape on Heart Corners?

The last step is to sew the bias tape around the edge of our heart mug rug pattern.

To do so, start on the bottom point of the heart.

You can use a bias tape presser foot to make your job easier. Or, if you are more skilled, you can just place the bias tape around and sew it as you go.

The trickier part will be to place the bias on the top corner (or “V” point) of our heart.

Here is the trick.

Pin your bias tape on the first half of the heart just before getting to the upper “V” point. Then, use your fingers to hold the tape near the corner as your other hand tries to cover the part you are holding with the wrong side of the bias tape.

This will create a fold in the middle of the corner that you must keep as you pull back the remaining bias tape to the right side.

Use your hand to push the newly formed bias tape “V” shape and use as many pins as necessary to hold it in place.

Sew your bias tape as you normally do to finish the rest of your heart shape.
