I don’t know why but Valentine’s Day turns the swatch of my creativity on.

And it makes it so much better when I get inspired to make something to decorate my home. A space that is entirely mine and that I get to “paint” with my crafts and sewing projects.

There is nothing more rewarding than people coming into your home and congratulating you for your decor.

Well, except maybe answering, “Oh, thank you, I made it.”

The colors, which, accordingly with the color theory, represent love, passion (red), purity, peace (white), and sweetness, delicacy (pink), are the perfect combo for this project.

This garland will look perfect on every space you choose to put it on. I am putting mine over the mantel.

But I got an idea from a friend of mine; she told me that it would look pretty cool as decor on my garden plants and flowers.

Not a bad idea at all!

How to cut a perfect heart shape out of fabric?

To cut a perfect fabric heart, you must use a paper template.

You can make this template yourself by cutting a paper sheet in half and tracing half a heart.

By cutting the heart shape when you have a folded sheet, you will achieve a perfectly symmetrical heart shape.

Or you can also download a drawing of a heart from the internet.

Maker’s choice.

As for cutting this template on the fabric, make sure to secure the pattern with pins, so it is easier to cut.

What kind of string should I use for a garland?

My personal opinion is that for this sort of sweet-looking project, you should use a string with a neutral tone.

For example here, I used woven yarn.

You can also use Jute Twine which will make your project look trendy and home-y.

Of course, being pretty is not the only reason to use these types of strings. The neutral color of natural materials will automatically make your garland main pieces pop out, visually.

What notions can I add to my heart garland decor?

You can find a wide variety of beads or charms online. They can be rounded, cylindrical, with letters and of any color and size you can imagine!

I already had some loose beads laying around in my notions box. Because as you know, I never throw anything away. LOL.

So, when the opportunity arises I use them.

Here, I chose to make a “string” decor with beads on my dark pink hearts with long and round beads.

I also used some pink yarn to make mini pompoms as another element of this garland.

And there are so many ideas you can use to decor your garland with notions.

For example, you can add iridescent beads so your heart garland DIY shines with the sunlight, or you can even make your own tassels and hang them in there.

How to Make a Heart Garland DIY?

Follow these step-by-step instructions to make this beautiful heart garland for Valentine’s Day.

1. Gather the materials.

2. Make the patterns

Check how to make your heart patterns above.

I made 3 sizes for my heart garland. One of them is 3 ½” width and 2 ¾” tall, and the other is 4 ¼” wide by 3 ¼” tall.

Use at least ¼” of seam allowance so you can manipulate the shapes easier.

3. Cut on fabric.

Cut the heart patterns on your fabric. Remember to use pins to cut.

For each heart, you want, you must cut two pieces mirrored.

As for how many you should make, it will depend on how long you want your garland to be.

4. Sew and turn inside out.

Sew the hearts at ¼. Leave an open space.

Make notches or clips around the edge of the seam allowance. This will help you to get a better shape when you turn the piece inside out.

Press your seams and turn inside out. Press again. If you are working with delicate fabric that burns easily pull out your pressing cloth.

5. Stuff the hearts.

Use the filling you chose to fill the hearts to your liking.

If you are making this design, just fill the pink and fuchsia hearts and press the white one flat.

6. Close the opening.

Once your hearts are stuffed use an invisible stitch to close the space you left open.

Once your pink and fuchsia hearts are filled, close them with a few small stitches, do the same step with the white heart without filling.

7. Make your mini pompoms.

Make your pompoms with the pink yarn.

As I wanted them really small I used the fork technique, one of the four techniques of our tutorial “How to make yarn pompoms”.

8. Make a decorative stitch.

Take your size 14 needle and make a blanket stitch with yarn on your bigger white heart. If you want to learn how to make this stitch check out our hand stitches guide.
There you will find this and other cool stitches you can use to decor the edges of your hearts.

9. Join the white and pink hearts.

Place one of the small hearts over the white big heart and secure it with small stitches.

Grab only one layer of the pink heart, and one layer of the white heart so the stitches won’t show in the front.

10. Decor!

This is a completely optional step. But we do recommend it.

Use beads to make strings hang from your hearts. We recommend you use iridescent ones for shine and sparkle.

We use 4 strings of thread to thread our beads so they would resist better.

14. Thread your Heart Garland DIY

Put all the pieces of the Heart Garland together.

Use your size 14 hand needle to insert the hearts into your yarn or jute twine through the hearts.

Remember to leave some string at the beginning and at the end to hold it wherever you want.

And that’s it!

You have finished your beautiful Heart Garland.
