The inspiration for this DIY Heating Pad was born out of the nearness of my next “Time of the month” and what always comes with it: THE PERIOD PAIN. You know how there are some girls that can even get out of bed when those days come?
Well, I am one of them.
On last December we made together Christmas inspired Pocket Heating Pads, and now I want to translate this idea into a DIY heating pad for cramps or menstrual pains.
And here is the beauty of this project. They are not only cute looking heating pads.
The actual shape of a heart covers the exact area on your body where the pain usually locates. Plus the weight (approx 450 grams per heart) is so comforting too.
This Heart heating pads are very helpful and thoughtful gift for that girl everyone knows (if you are not that girl yourself) that suffers a lot on that time of the month. Put a bow on one of this heart pads and your Valentine’s gift will be ready to go.
And, hey! While you are it, throw a bar of chocolate too. Your friends will be so grateful, I am telling you.

You will need:
- 100% Cotton Fabric
- 450 gms of regular rice (about half pack)
- Matching thread
- A medium size sheet of paper
- Spoon or measuring spoons
- 1 bar of yummy chocolate (Maybe one more, for sewing mojo too…)
Step 1.
Start with two layers of 11″ x 11″ 100% cotton fabric and fold them in half so you can cut the shape of a heart.
Step 2.
Sew around the heart leaving the top curves open. Then turn it inside out and press the seams.
Step 3.
Mark a vertical line just at the half of the heart and after this mark two lines from this one 2 3/42 inches apart.
Sew through this lines (stopping 1/2″ before the top edge).
Now mark with chalk or pencil the horizontal lines forming squares like this:
Optional: Make a cone with the sheet of paper and cut the tip. Use this to fill each space right up where the horizontal line is.
Step 4.
Pin and sew with a zipper foot through the horizontal line, so the rice won’t fall out. Repeat with the next row.
Step 5.
When you get to the top of the heart make a cut in the center. Fold the seams in and pin them. Fill the squares and close them by sewing them like before.
Step 6.
At the end fold the seam allowance in, and make an invisible stitch to close your heart up.
Place in the microwave for 30 sec (repeat 30 seconds by 30 seconds until you find the right heat for you) and prepare to lose the pain.
Final step: Relax and eat your chocolate 😉

Totally!
I’m wondering if this is washable?
It is not washable. What you can do, though, is to make a cover for the pad. That way, you can remove the cover and wash that only.
Can you use feed corn in place of rice?
I personally wouldn’t use it because I haven’t heard of corn being used for this specifically-
Feeder corn works just fine in place of rice for hot packs. 🔥 Very economical as well. I plan on using corn to make this up.
That’s an interesting idea. Have you made heating pads with this type of corn before? Please let me know how it turns out.
You can use wheat, corn, rice, etc.
I have never used wheat. I need to try it and see how different it is.
I am wondering ig there is a video for this. I am new a sewing and would love to make this.
Not yet, but now that you mention it, I will make one!
Have you made the video yet, if so where can I find d it
