About the Ghost Pillow Patterns.

I don’t know about you, but even though I love Halloween like any other crafty person, I HATE scary things!!

Ever since I was a teen, I couldn’t stand any scary movies, costumes, or ghost stories. That later became a challenge for me to enjoy the most spooky holiday there is.

That was, of course, until I discovered a trend called “Cute Halloween Decorations.” Which is basically taking all “spooky” Halloween things and turning them into cute decorations instead.

And that my friend was what first inspired me to come up with this trio of Ghosts.

I originally designed these ghosts for my Embroidery Ghost Garland DIY. I loved that so much that this year, I decided to turn those ghosts into a set of 3 free sewing patterns for throw pillows.

This pattern comes in a PDF format you can download and print from the comfort of your home.

As for the eyes, you have two options. You can download the free eyes embroidery file and use it to apply the eyes to your canvas, or you can use the printable pattern to cut and sew the eyes manually with your machine.

I am not going to lie. I felt especially lazy the day I was assembling this Halloween Sewing Project. And I thought making the eyes with my Brother embroidery machine would make things easier and quick. And that’s precisely what it did.

But the twist is that if you don’t feel like setting up your embroidery files, you can also sew the eyes by cutting them into some felt and using a closed zig-zag stitch to attach them to the pillows. Your choice!

Embroidery Eyes File: Enhancing Your Ghost Pillow

I think the key element for this set of ghost-shaped pillows to look this cute are the big black and long eyes.

You can’t help but say a big “awe” when you look at the faces of these little ghosts, can you?? These simple yet powerful eyes make the pillows have a lot of character, which is something a lot of “cute” commercial Halloween product designers do.

In fact, after I first posted the sneak peek of this project, many people told me they looked very similar to the pottery barn ghost pillows.

And I gotta say that our pattern can certainly make an excellent dupe of those pillows!! And at half the cost!

Now, these eyes are a little tricky to sew as I am using fleece fabric for the pillow’s body and felt for the eyes. I must admit I do not have the best pulse to handle such small pattern pieces these days. That is why I thought creating the eyes with an embroidery file would be so much easier.

To use this file, you only have to upload it to your embroidery machine and place the design of the ghost pillow pattern in the part of the face you want to position the eyes.

Using the Embroidery File For the Ghost Eyes

  1. First, it will embroider the outline of the eye.
  2. You will need to position a piece of felt above that outline. Make sure it covers it entirely.
  3. The machine will embroider a second outline.
  4. Remove the hoop and cut the excess fabric. Return the hoop.
  5.  The machine will make a satin stitch around the eye. And it will be ready.

You will have to do this if you want to use the free embroidery file for the ghost eyes. But if you’re going to do it by hand, then follow the instructions below.

Tips for Creating Perfect Ghost Pillows

Creating these gorgeous Ghost Pillow Patterns is super easy. The project is very straightforward, and I am sure you will have no problems completing it beautifully. But if you want to kick it up and get EVEN BETTER results, follow these tips.

  • Check for the Nap of the fabric. Fleece fabrics have a nap direction. To find it, pass your hand over the fabric and see which direction the fibers go. Cut with the nap going down.
  • Use a ballpoint needle. These needles work great with fleece as they avoid puckers.
  • Don’t pull or push. Avoid pulling or pushing the fabric while sewing it because it might deform.
  • Use a long stitch. Use a stitch length of 4 or higher. That way, it will be easier to unstitch if you make a mistake.
  • Finishing stitches. Fleece doesn’t fray, but it can release a lot of small fibers when cut. To avoid this, you can serge the raw edges after sewing.
  • Practice the eyes on a scrap. Before you sew the real thing, make a practice run of the eyes in a piece of scrap fabric to see if you like the results.

1. Download and assemble your free sewing pattern.

This sewing pattern is available as a part of My Golden Thimble’s Free Halloween Sewing Projects and Tutorials. You will find the link to download the product at the end of this post.

Download the pattern and assemble it.

2. Cut your pieces.

You should have two mirrored pieces out of each sewing pattern.

If you are going to sew the eyes by hand, then cut six pairs of eyes in black felt. You can use tracing paper or pattern-making paper to copy the eyes from the ghost pattern.

Make sure to consider the fabric’s nap when you cut the patterns. The right way to do it is by placing the pattern over the fabric with the nap facing down to you. This means that the fibers will go down when you pass your hand over the fabric, creating a smooth surface.

3. Sew the eyes.

If you are using the embroidery file included in the free template of this project, follow the instructions in the embroidery file section above. Otherwise, do the following.

Place a pair of eyes over the right side of the ghost’s face and secure it in place with pins.

Then, use a very closed zig-zag stitch to sew around the eye’s shape and create a nice satin finish.

The ghost pillow pattern pdf design doesn’t include a mouth, but you can draw one by using a free-motion applique technique.

4. Form the pillow.

Take the ghost right sides together and pin around the shape to secure it in place. Sew around at 1/2″ seam allowance, leaving about 2″-3″ of the pillow open.

Then, use your scissors to clip around the entire seam allowance. But be very careful not to cut the seams. Then, turn the piece outside in.

5. Add the filling and close it.

Stuff your favorite craft filling inside of the open space of the pillow.

Try not to stuff it too much to avoid the pillow to be stiff. We want this ghost to be very soft as a throw pillow.

Finally, use an invisible/ladder stitch to close the open space.
