Did you know that you can make a Blind Hem with Serger Machines for knit and even woven fabrics?

Now if you are wondering…
Why should I learn this Blind Hem technique?
The answer is simple:
As I told you above this type of seam is very clean.
It is also a very convenient advantage to not change machines just for hemming.
But the real great reason for doing this blind hem seam finish is that:
The Invisible Hem for Knits made with your serger machine will allow the fabric to keep all its natural stretch!
Now, of course, is more than one way to do an invisible seam. You can do for example a Blind Hem with your regular sewing machine.
All though, you will find this Sewing Technique, once mastered, is quicker and more convenient than other options.
If you use your Regular Sewing Machine to do this kind of stitch with your knit fabrics it still will keep some stretch, but not all of it because this seam has straight stitches.
Which we already know are not good for stretch fabric.

How do you make a Hem with a Serger Machine?
To make a hem with a serger machine you can use the technique of a blind hem for overclockers. Some machines come with a separate presser foot just for this function but you can also sew a hem in a serger without it.
In this post, I will be teaching you 2 ways of l doing this.
The first one is with an actual Blind Foot for your Serger machine.
This foot is usually included when you purchase your machine, and it really makes things very easy.
If your serger machine didn’t come with one of these you can buy it here along with the other 5 Pressers for $11.99 (Singer Machines) or here also with 6 pcs set for $28.99 (For both Brother and Singer Overlocks).
Don’t want to buy a new foot for your machine but do you still want to know how to do an Invisible Hem with your Serger Machine?
No worries macaroni!

On the second technique we will follow the same process as with the Invisible Hem foot but this time we will make the hem with a standard serger foot.
First of all, if this is the first time you are going to try this technique I need to say:
Be patient.
Probably, it might not come out perfect the first time.
But, like everything in life, you will find that with practice it will be getting better and better.
Now, Are you ready to learn how to make an Invisible Hem with your Serger machine? All righty!! Let’s dig in…

Remember that you can get the printable instructions for this tutorial at the end of the post 😉
1- How to do an Invisible hem with an Invisible Hem Serger/Overlock Foot.

Step 1-
The first thing you want to do is fold and press the hem towards the wrong side of the fabric.
This step is optional, but I want you to know that makes all the following processes easier.

Step 2-
Fold again the edge of the fabric where the hem is.
Except for this time you are going to fold towards the right side of the fabric.
Leave a space on the hem that is the same width as the width of your serger stitch. You should end up with something like this:

Step 3- Settings of your Serger/Overlock
Set up the machine for 3 threads only with only one needle (in the left position). First, remove the right needle.
And then, you have to set up the Tension of your disks like this:
Needle thread tension: between 0-2 (First disk)
Upper looper thread tension: between 5-7 (Third disk)
Lower looper thread tension: between 2-4 (Fourth disk)
Step 4-
Place your fabric with the wrong side facing up.
And then, insert the fabric with the folded edge on the left in such a way that the needle pierces just into this folded edge while sewing.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The closest the needle pierces to the edge, the smaller the stitch will be on the rigth side of the fabric. Psst… We want it smaller!!

Step 5-
Finally, open the fabric by pulling both the edge and the folded side in opposite directions and end your hem with some pressing.

2.- How to do a Blind hem with a Regular Serger/Overlock Foot
As I said before, you can do the Blind Hem with Serger Machines without having a Blind Hem Foot.
The process is basically the same as before, with the difference you have to use these two marks in the picture above to be your guides.
Want more directions??? Check out the Video Tutorial for this Sewing Technique at the end of this post!!

You will have to keep the folded edge exactly on the left of these marks when you start sewing to make sure the needle pierce just a little bit of the folded edge.
This is a little tricky as the length of the blind stitch will depend on how far or near the needle pierce the folded edge.

As you can see here in the picture below I don’t really have a lot of practice with using the regular foot on this stitch so I accidentally skipped some stitches.
I wanted to show you the picture for you to see and understand that this is a matter of practice with the Blind Hem with Serger technique.
So don’t worry.
You can see here how it ended up looking like: (The one I made with the Regular Foot is the one on the top)

So if it is your first time doing this stitch try it on a scrap of the same fabric first. This way you will be able to get a sense of how it works.
To finish this hem repeat step 5 and pull both sides of the fabric out. Then press the seam.
And that’s it!!

All though we recommend getting the specialty presser foot to make the job easier.

Do you leave the cutting blade in place or lower it?
I lower it!
Thank you seems easy, will try today.
Thank you! Let me know how it goes.
This would be so much better if you demo’d on a fabric with a clear right and wrong side – and/ or on an actual garment hem rather than on a piece of scrap fabric. It’s the folding that’s the all important instruction.
You are right Kim. I have the intention of recording a whole new video to show this more clearly.
You wonderfully answered my thought question. However, I have never seen so many ads in a tutorial!!!
Ouchi, sorry that you had an uncomfortable experience with our ads.
Thank you so very much for this wonderful explanation on how to blind hem stitch on a serger. It is by far the easiest—for me personally—to follow. After 15 minutes of practice, I was completing my project without stress and you are so very correct…it just gives it such a finished and professional look. Again, thank you.
You are very welcome Cecelia, I am glad that this tutorial helped you 😀
The video instruction is wonderful.Thank you so much.
One suggestion: the background music is way too loud and distracting. Please lower the volume and/or play none.
Not attempting to be critical at all. Just making a suggestion. Your educational technique is great.
