Pillowcases are great for protecting your pillows from spills, damage, or stains caused by natural face secretions like sweat. They are also a fantastic way to make a statement with your bedroom decorations without spending too much money.
As you know, the bed is the main focus of a bedroom, and that’s why having a good set of pillows and pillowcases can significantly affect how good and put-together your room looks.
We have already made our own duvet covers using two flat sheets. Which incidentally was crazy cheaper than buying a new one.
But what about the pillow sets? That’s why we are here today.
In this post, I will tell you everything you need to know to make pillowcases for your pillows. From what size fits your bed the best to what and how much fabric you should buy to make them.
What are the standard sizes for a Pillowcase?
The standard size of a pillowcase is 20” (50.8 cm) wide x 26” (66 cm) long. These pillowcases can fit a standard pillow but can also hold a smaller one. You can fold the extra material at the ends within the same case to make it look good.
| Pillowcase Size | Measurements (inches) | Measurements (cm) |
| King | 20″ x 36″ | 51 cm x 92 cm |
| Queen | 20″ x 30″ | 51cm x 76 cm |
| Full | 20″ x 26″ | 51 cm x 66 cm |
| Twin | 20″ x 32″ | 51 cm x 80 cm |
Depending on the pillowcase design, the opening can be on one side or the back of the pillowcase.
You will notice that each pillow’s length is half as wide as the bed size measurement, except for the twin size. Because the twin bed is too small for two pillows. It would look better with just one wide enough for your head to rest on.
How much fabric Do I need for One Pillowcase?
The rule of thumb on how much fabric to get is 1 yard per pillowcase.
But I know that you will probably not make a single pillowcase. Chances are you are making at least a pair. And if we are being exact and precise in our cuts, you will need less than a yard of fabric per pillowcase.
Remember that if you add trims like homemade bias tape, fabric appliques, or embroidery, you will need more materials than the ones mentioned here.
Here are the numbers.
standard-size pillowcase
To make a standard pillowcase, you will need .8 yards (80 cm) of fabric, which will make a 20” by 26” pillowcase. This is considered an open-at-the-side or open-at-the-back design.
To make a pair of standard pillows, you will need 1.7 yards (160 cm) of fabric.
Now, if you need to cut the pieces horizontally (e.g. if you have a directional print or nap fabric), you need to get at least 1.2 yards (115 cm) of fabric for each pillowcase.

King Size Pillowcase
To make a King-size pillowcase, you need 1.2 yards (95 cm) of fabric. If you cut the pieces vertically, you can fit the front and the back of a 20” by 36” pillowcase.
On the other hand, if you make a two-king-size pillowcase set, you will only need 1.7 yards (160 cm) of fabric if you arrange the pieces as in the picture below.
If you have a directional print or a nap fabric and need to cut the pieces horizontally, get at least 1.2 yards (115 cm) of fabric for each pillowcase.

Queen Size Pillowcase
To make a Queen-size pillowcase, you need .9 yards (81 cm) of fabric. If you cut the pieces vertically, you will have a 20” by 30” pillowcase. And a good piece of fabric is left.
To make a pair of queen-size pillowcases, you will need 1.7 yards (160 cm) of fabric. You can fit the front and back pieces as shown here.
Like the other examples, if you need to cut the pieces horizontally (if you have a directional print or nap fabric), you need to get at least 1.2 yards (115 cm) of fabric for each pillowcase.

Twin Size Pillowcase
To make a single twin-size pillowcase, you need 1 yard (95 cm) of fabric. But if you need to cut the pieces horizontally (e.g., if you have a directional print or nap fabric), you need at least 1.2 yards (115 cm) of fabric.

What is the best fabric to make pillowcases?
A good pillowcase fabric should be breathable and comfortable enough to allow you a good night’s sleep. The best fabrics for pillowcases are 100% cotton and silk.
When it comes to price and quality, the different types of cotton fabrics offer the best benefits due to their softness and ease of cleaning. On the other hand, if you want a more luxurious look and feel, you can choose silk or linen fabrics. Finally, opt for microfiber or polyester fabrics if you want something inexpensive.
How to make a pillowcase?
To make a standard pillowcase, check our pillow sizes guide above and choose the one that fits your bed. Cut out the pieces of fabric you will need for your pillowcase. Include one rectangular piece for the front and two pieces for the back.
Make a hem on the openings of the back center. Face the front and back pieces with the right sides of the fabrics facing together and sew the edges.
Finish the raw edges of the fabric seams with your preferred technique and turn the case inside out. Give it a good press, and your pillowcase will be ready to use.
