Making scrunchies is a total beginner-friendly activity (you probably already have a little stash of them if you’ve been sewing for a while). But today we’re going to bloom it up by creating a flower-shaped scrunchie that’s just too cute to handle.

You can wear it to dress up your casual ponytail or wrap it around your wrist to add a little handmade charm to your spring outfit.
And yes, there’s a free sewing pattern included—because I know you like that.
DIY Flower Scrunchie Obsession
Let me tell you a little secret: this isn’t just a one-time flower thing.
Have you ever found yourself accidentally repeating a pattern in your sewing or your outfits? And I don’t mean like…a paper pattern. I mean, like, a thing—a style or color or shape you keep coming back to again and again?
For me, it started with ruffles. I had them on pillowcases, I had them on tote bags… then they moved into all my favorite tops (remember that puff-sleeve crop top? Or the shirred versions for spring and summer?).

And now? Apparently, flowers are taking over.
Last week I finished sewing my flower tote bag, and this week? We’re making this adorable flower scrunchie. And you might want to sit down, because my next tutorial also involves flowers.
What can I say? I’m in my flower era.

You’ll just have to stick around to see what I come up with next!
But for now, let’s make this sweet little project together.
A few tips before we start
For this scrunchie, I recommend using woven fabric, preferably lightweight cotton. This helps it gather nicely and form the petals without becoming too bulky.
I used a cute leftover gingham fabric from my shirred back crop top, and now I’m planning to wear it together as a cozy home outfit—matchy-matchy moment, anyone?

You’ll also need a piece of ¼” wide elastic (just about the length of your wrist), some matching thread, and your trusty sewing machine. That’s it!
Let’s dive into the materials list, and then we’ll get to the fun part: sewing this floral cutie!
DIY Flower Scrunchie Sewing Tutorial

Materials You’ll Need to Make a Flower Scrunchie
Here’s what you’ll need to create your adorable flower scrunchie—and chances are, you already have most of these in your sewing stash!
- Lightweight Woven Fabric – Cotton works best! I used a soft gingham I had leftover from my shirred crop top. You only need a small piece, so it’s a great scrap buster!
- ¼” Wide Elastic – Just cut a piece that fits comfortably around your wrist (around 6–7 inches works for most people).
- Matching Thread – Because visible thread isn’t cute when you want the fabric to shine.
- Sewing Machine – Any machine will do, as long as it’s ready to handle a simple straight stitch.
- Fabric Scissors – To cut out your flower scrunchie pattern pieces.
- Pins or Clips – To hold everything together before stitching.
Optional but very handy:
- Loop Turner – Makes turning the tube of fabric right-side out soooo much easier.
- Bodkin or Safety Pin – For inserting the elastic with zero frustration (you’ll thank me later).

Now that we’ve got our materials ready, it’s time to bring this flower to life!
1. Fold and Press Your Fabric

First, cut a rectangle of fabric that measures 6 ½” by 18” long.
Fold your fabric lengthwise with the right sides facing each other.
Give it a quick press with your iron to create a nice crisp crease. This will help keep everything neat when we cut out the shape.
2. Trace and Cut the Flower Shape
Now, grab your flower scrunchie pattern and place it on the fabric with the straight edge lined up along the fold.

This part is important so your scrunchie comes out symmetrical!
Use some pins or fabric clips to hold it steady and trace around the pattern. You’ll see the flower shape coming together already, and we haven’t even sewn a stitch yet.
3. Sew Around the Petals
Let’s move on to sewing! Start stitching just before the first curve (you’ll see it on the pattern), and don’t forget to backstitch at the beginning so everything stays secure.

Then just keep following the outline, gently guiding your fabric along all those cute curves.
As a tip, I recommend lowering and raising the presser foot as needed to rotate the fabric as you go. Just make sure you leave the needle down!
4. Snip and Trim the Curves
Once that’s done, we need to do a little trimming magic.
Make a small straight cut at each of the corners or marked points.

If you have pinking shears—yay! Use them to trim around the curves. If not, just make tiny triangle-shaped notches around the curves, and trim down the seam allowance.
And cut along the lines for the side tabs, too.
This helps everything lay flat when we turn it right side out.
5. Turn It Right Side Out

Now the satisfying part—turning it right side out! I used my loop turner, but if you don’t have one, a pencil or even a straw and a chopstick will do the trick.

Take your time with this step, especially around those petals.
6. Fold and Press the Tab

Once it’s turned, give your flower scrunchie a good press to smooth out all those curves and help shape it. Fold one of the side tabs inward neatly.
This is where we’ll close things up later.
7. Sew the Elastic Casing

Now, using your ruler or seam gauge, measure ¼” in from the folded edge and draw a straight line across the whole scrunchie.
This will become our elastic casing.
Sew along that line with a straight stitch, backstitching at both ends to secure it.
8. Thread the Elastic Through
Next, we’re threading the elastic!
Wrap the elastic around your wrist and overlap it about 2”-3” and cut that length.
Grab your bodkin or a safety pin and slide the elastic through the casing.
Be gentle and make sure the elastic doesn’t twist inside—this part can be fiddly, but you’ve got this.

9. Sew the Elastic Ends Together
Once both ends of the elastic are out, overlap them slightly (those 2” or 3” from the last step). And sew them together with a zigzag stitch.
I like to go back and forth a couple of times for extra strength.
10. Close the Scrunchie
Now we’re almost done! Tuck the raw side tab into the folded one, lining it up neatly, and then finish your scrunchie with a straight stitch across the seam.
Give it one last press—and you’re done! You just made the cutest little DIY Flower Scrunchie!!
And I have a feeling it won’t be your last.

These are seriously addictive to make, and they’re perfect for gifts, matching sets, or just dressing up your ponytail with something handmade and blooming with love.
Final Thoughts
And that’s it, friend! Your flower scrunchie is all done and looking absolutely adorable. Isn’t it the cutest little project?
I love how something so simple can add such a playful, handmade touch to your outfits. Plus, it’s such a fun way to use up fabric scraps and turn them into something beautiful.

I seriously can’t wait to see all the versions you make—florals, ginghams, pastels, maybe even a little velvet one for fall?
Don’t forget to tag me if you share it, and keep an eye out… because there are definitely more flower-themed goodies coming soon!

I purchased the dog collar pattern but nowhere does it say how long the elastic needs to be for the neck.
The ideal thing for the elastic is for you to measure your dog’s neck and cut it to size, so it won’t be uncomfy to them.
i think i misunderstood the directions 🙁
it said Fold your fabric lengthwise with the wrong sides facing each other.
i was following step by step but then… the right sides end up inside when i turn it around
i think it should,ve been right sides facing each other, no?
Oh my tlanta! You are totally correct! I am terribly sorry. Just fixed that! Thanks for letting me know!
