About This Project

Before we dive into the sewing part, I want to tell you why I’m so in love with this Snowflake Pillow Sewing Pattern and why it instantly became one of my favorite Christmas sewing projects this year.

This pillow turned out so beautiful and high-end that when I finished it, I had this little moment of “Did I seriously make this?” It has that boutique-decor look you usually see in fancy holiday displays, but the fun thing is that you get to customize every detail.

For this tutorial, I’m using the free version of the pattern, which makes a 15-inch tall pillow. It comes as a simple PDF that you can print and start using right away, so you can sit down and sew with me without changing anything.

Now, if you want extra options, the premium version gives you three different sizes: a 15-inch pillow, a 17-inch pillow, and a wonderfully plump 19-inch one.

The biggest bonus of the premium version is that it includes an SVG cutting file for the snowflake. Since the snowflake has lots of little points and curves, cutting it by hand can take a while.

But with the SVG file, you can send it to your Cricut or Cameo and let it cut everything for you. The difference is amazing. You get a perfectly clean and crisp snowflake shape, and it saves so much time.

And of course, getting the premium version helps support me and this little sewing space, which means I can keep creating more free tutorials, patterns, and classes for you.

But if you’re sticking with the free pattern, that’s completely okay too. You can still support the blog in small, meaningful ways—leaving a comment, sharing this post, or sending me a picture of your finished pillow.

How to Sew a Snowflake Pillow Sewing Pattern

Materials & Tools

Before you start sewing your snowflake pillow, make sure you have everything ready:

  • Snowflake Pillow Pattern by My Golden Thimble (free 15-inch version at the end, or premium version with additional sizes)
  • Fleece fabric
  • Felt fabric
  • Cricut Machine (optional)
  • Pillow stuffing/fiberfill
  • Basic sewing tools — scissors or rotary cutter, pins or clips, sewing machine, matching thread, etc.

Recommended Materials For This Project:

Once you have all that gathered, you’ll be ready to start cutting and sewing your own festive pillow!

1. Download and Assemble Your Snowflake Pillow Sewing Pattern

The first thing you’ll want to do is download and assemble your Snowflake Pillow Sewing Pattern. You can choose the free version or the premium one if you’d like access to more sizes and the cutting files for your Cricut Machine. Once you have your pieces ready, cut two mirrored pieces for the pillow body and one snowflake piece on felt.

I personally recommend felt because it makes a clean, sturdy applique, which is exactly the technique we’re using for this Christmas pillow sewing pattern. If you prefer another fabric for your snowflake, just make sure you have a little anti-fray glue on hand so the raw edges stay neat while you sew.

2. Prepare and Sew the Snowflake Appliqué

Once your pattern pieces are cut, we’ll start by adding the snowflake to the front pillow panel. Place the snowflake over the right side of the fabric, pin it in place, and make sure it’s properly centered.

The snowflake has a right orientation, so keep an eye on this: one of the longer snowflake points should sit vertically, aligned with the long side of the pillow. This keeps your design looking straight and intentional on your holiday pillow tutorial.

Take it to your sewing machine and sew around the entire snowflake at ⅛ inch from the edge. You can play with this step if you want. A zigzag or satin stitch works well on applique, but I kept mine simple with a straight stitch.

3. Sew the Pillow Body

Now place the back pillow panel over the appliquéd front piece with right sides together. Align everything neatly and sew all the way around using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Leave a small opening on one of the long edges. This gap is where we’ll turn and stuff the pillow later.

Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of your seam so everything stays secure.

4. Trim, Notch, and Turn

Once your seam is complete, we’ll clean up the edges for a smooth finish. On the inner curves of your pillow, make small notches to release the tension. On the outer curves, you can trim away some of the seam allowance so your pillow turns beautifully without bulk.

After trimming, turn the pillow right side out through the opening.

5. Stuff and Close Your Snowflake Pillow

Begin filling your pillow with your favorite stuffing—fiberfill, shredded foam, or any material you love using in easy Christmas sewing crafts. Take your time shaping it until it’s full and plump.

Once you’re happy with the result, finish by closing the opening with a hand-sewn invisible stitch. Once you close your pillow with an invisible stitch, you’re done with one of the cutest easy Christmas sewing crafts you can make this season.
