This year, I’m bringing back my wine bag pattern from last year with a cozy Christmas makeover! Last time, I went all out with a ribbon closure, but honestly, sewing buttonholes on vinyl was a little too much holiday “fun” for me.
So, this time, I’m keeping it simple and letting those beautiful Christmas fabric prints do all the talking.

These wine bags are super quick to sew, and they’re adorable and personal. Plus, you can make a bunch to have on hand for Secret Santa swaps, holiday dinners, or any little gathering where you want to show up with some holiday cheer (and a nice bottle of wine).
What Makes This Wine Bag So Special?
As a wine enthusiast myself, I love giving bottles as gifts. Of course, I love them more when I receive them, but you know what I mean.
However, rather than arriving at a Christmas party empty-handed or with a plain store-bought bag, I wanted something unique and handmade.

This pattern for wine bottle bags uses very little fabric and only takes a few minutes to sew! (It took less than 20 minutes for me to make each one.)
So, grab your fabric scraps or a festive fat quarter, and let’s make a stylish Christmas wine gift bag. With this wine bag pattern, you can create multiple Christmas-themed wine bags to have on hand. Keep reading for your free wine bag pattern and instructions on how to make your own!
Fabric Recommendations For This Project
This wine bottle gift bag is a simple project, even for beginners, and requires minimal materials. We recommend using canvas fabric to make the bag sturdy so it can securely hold your bottle without any interfacing fabric. This time, though, I am using a nice thick vinyl, which, let me tell you, perfectly holds my wine bottles.

The bottom line is to make sure your material has a nice medium to heavy weight.
The original wine tote bag includes buttonhole openings for a satin ribbon, adding a fancy touch. The ribbon threads through the bag, securing the wine bottle inside and giving it that festive feel – perfect for Christmas wine gifts!
I did try to make the buttonholes on my vinyl bags, but unfortunately, vinyl is not a forgiving fabric to manipulate, so I gave it up. If you want to check out how to make the buttonholes, please go to our original tutorial, where I will provide details on everything.

DIY Wine Gift Bag For Christmas Free Step-by-Step Tutorial

This tutorial provides a quick summary with written and video instructions to make these Christmas wine bags, perfect if you’re looking for a simple guide to follow along.
However, if you’d like more detailed, step-by-step instructions with pictures, no worries, you can find the full picture + instructions in my original blog post on My Golden Thimble. There, you’ll get a closer look at each stage of the process, making it even easier to sew these festive wine bags!
1. Cut the Fabric for the Pattern
Cut a 13 1/2″ x 12″ rectangle for the main body and two 2 1/2″ x 12″ strips for the straps.
2. Sew the Bag
Fold the main fabric piece in half with the right sides together. Sew along the side and bottom edges with a 1/4″ seam. Use pinking shears or a serger to finish the seam edges, preventing fraying.
3. Create Boxed Corners
To make a flat bottom, pull one corner to form a triangle, centering the bottom seam. Measure 1 1/4″ from the corner, then sew across. Repeat on the other corner.
4. Hem the Top Edge
Fold the top edge 1″ down twice and press. Stitch at 1/8″ from the edge to secure the hem.
5. Make and Attach the Straps
Fold each strap piece in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew along the sides and bottom, leaving the top open. Turn right side out, press, and topstitch close to the open edge. Attach each strap 1/2″ from each side on both the front and back of the bag.
