I have wanted to make this beautiful sewing project forever now.

If you know me, you know I like my wine. That’s my drink of choice (besides coffee in the mornings, of course) for almost everything, especially on those long nights of sewing.

So, having a wine bag for me to take to parties was a must. I love getting wine bottles for my friends as gifts on their birthdays, for example. And of course, you can never arrive empty-handed to a holiday party.

How to sew a wine tote bag?

To sew a wine bottle gift bag, you need to cut the fabric following the free sewing pattern directions below. Then gather your materials. We recommend canvas fabric for this fabulous gift bag.

It can securely hold your wine without using interfacing. Finally, follow our step-by-step sewing tutorial to assemble your bottle bag.

A great thing about this bag design is that it has buttonhole openings, so you can thread a satin ribbon through them and make a pretty bow.

This element makes the wine bottle tote perfect for your friends to use as a party gift, a Christmas gift, or even a “Just Because” gift.

But hold on, this pretty bow is not only decorative! The ribbon runs from behind, through the bag, to the front to “hug” the wine’s neck securely.

What do I need to make a Fabric Wine Bottle Sewing Pattern?

Here are the materials you will need for this sewing project:

1. Cut the Sewing Patterns

Cut a square that measures 12 1/4″ x 12″. This will be the wine tote pattern body. Cut two strips that measure 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ for the straps.

2. Close the bag.

Fold the body of the bag piece lengthwise in half, with the right sides together. Sew the side and the bottom of the bag at 1/4″.

Use a pair of pinking shears to cut the seam allowance of the bag, so it doesn’t fray.

Or, if you prefer, you can also use a Serger to finish those seams. In fact, you can use any of the fabric edge finishing techniques you prefer.

3. Make the box seams.

We will make a boxed bottom on this bag so the wine can sit on a flat bottom. Pull out one corner of the bag and fold it, forming a triangle, like in this picture. The bottom seam of the bag has to be in the exact middle of the triangle.

Measure 1 1/4″ from the corner of the triangle down and make a straight stitch horizontally. Repeat on the other corner of the bag.

I like to press the edges of the box right after sewing it, so it stays flat and pretty. So, I recommend you do that too.

4. Make a hem on the top.

Fold the bag 1″ opening twice to make a hem.

Press and sew it at 1/8″ from its folded edge.

5. Sew the buttonholes.

Use a button that measures 3/4″ in diameter to make four buttonholes through which the ribbon will pass.

The buttonholes must be located 1 3/4″ from the sides and 1″ from the Top of the bag down.

6. Form the straps.

To make the straps, first, fold one of the short ends 1/4″ to the wrong side of the fabric.

Then, fold the strips of fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides facing together. Sew the sides and the bottom at 1/4″, leaving the hem edge open.

Turn the straps inside out and press. Close the opening of the straps with an invisible seam.

7. Sew the straps to the bag.

Pin the straps 1/2″ away from each side and sew them with a square shape to hold them into the bag. Repeat the process on the front and the back of the bag pattern.

8. Insert the ribbon.

Cut a piece of ribbon 20″ long. Choose your favorite color, preferably one that matches the colors of your DIY wine bag.

Insert the ribbon through the back buttonholes from the right side of the fabric. Then, insert the ends of the ribbon through the right side of the bag from the inside. Meaning from the wrong side of the fabric.

9. Add wine and enjoy!

You are done! Now you have completed your beautiful DIY Wine Tote Sewing Pattern Free Tutorial. The only thing left is adding a nice bottle of wine and taking this baby to a party!

    • Hi Jen! I am sorry this pattern doesn’t come with a printable PDF but rather the measurements notes on how to cut it in the instructions. I am making notes of which patterns in that format people would like to come as a PDF too, so I am now adding this one 😀

  1. I love the design of this bag. I would, however, recommend the initial bag square dimensions be 15-1/2” x 12” to fit a standard wine bottle after boxing corners and turning top down 1” + 1”. Also I would map out where to put the button holes before sewing the bag.

  2. A bit disappointing tbh. My mother (88 years old and on a ridiculously small budget) saw this and wanted to make it. Your site says the tutorial and pattern is free. I would be happy to buy the pattern — my mother is a master tailor, so probably doesn’t need the tutorial. There is no link to download the pattern. Please fix.

    • My dearest Eric, I am so sorry for the confusion. The tutorial and pattern directions are what’s free for this one.
If you read carefuly you will find how to draft the pattern in the very first step.
I hope this can help and I will take your comment into consideration to make a printable wine tote sewing pattern too.

      • That’s incorrect. The above clearly states “Free Pattern and Tutorial”, not “Free Pattern Directions”. You should either provide the pattern (though not really necessary, as one can work from the dimensions) or at least make the instructions into an easily printable format.

  3. Thanks for this very timely pattern. I was making a basket for a raffle give-away with cozies for wine glasses and a bottle of wine. I decided to also make the tote to dress up the basket even more!
    Turned out so cute.
