Let’s talk a bit about the power of organization.
I have always believed that the key to having a Perfectly Organized Sewing Room is maintaining and maintaining.
Maintaining the organization with small actions is much better than cleaning up a bomb after it has exploded.
It can seem difficult to clean entirely at the end of each project.
But if you schedule to do small cleaning actions every day, you will see that it is much easier.
Having dedicated storage for everything also helps a lot. Especially if they are at hand, reach them when you need them.
But don’t be fooled and rely solely on throwing things into one single space every time.
We can make the mistake of throwing so much stuff there we can forget what was there in the first place.
If doing something like this is very difficult for you, don’t worry. With this free sewing room organization challenge, you will have the perfect organization system ready in 5 weeks. It’s all a matter of starting.

Collect any small scraps and garbage from the top of the table every night.
And above all don’t forget to do constant small cleaning tasks. Some of these tasks can be putting the sewing machine covers on each machine, putting your seam ripper and scissors back in their place, picking up lost pins on the floor, and so on.

my daughter got me magnetic bowll that men use to hold nuts and bolts while they work they stay in place I use for my pins it can turn off and they stay there, also my husband got a long stick with magnetic on end, I said oh yes pins I drop and now pick up and no bending. He has a bar magnetic to hold screwdrivers, now have one above my sewing machine to hold scissors, and other things so easy to find.
OMG yassss gurl!! Take hubbie’s tools! I wnt to fet that magnetic stick! I am always dropping pins.
Thank you! We moved in 2020 & kept room tidy then but as life became busier & busier, my office/sewing room/dump room is a disaster. I have been trying to get to reorganizing since 2023 but something always came up! 2026 is the year!
1) Finding pins tool of choice: long magnetic ‘wand’ found in auto accessories section (even better with light on end)
** fun note: kids/grands love using this tool to ‘help’ 😉😉
2) our cupboard doors are 9ft or 10ft (high ceilings) – too high for me to reach. What or how can I hang anything on them that would be lower for me to reach (ie not ‘over the door’)….thanks
Hi Path! Thank you so much for sharing your tools! I love that idea of the wand with a light! I didn’t knew they made them with light, but that would be so usefull for my sewing room. I lost half of my pins on my wooden floors because I can’t see them. This will be life saving!
I’ve discovered that my old mug tree (it’s a circular one with two levels)works great to hang my scissors on
I’d love to see that! I bet it looks amazing!
I use the same thing. An old mug tree I got at Good Will. Then I stray painted it an Aqua color and I love it to hang all my scissors.
This is super smart! I’d love to see a picture, could you maybe post one on My Golden Thimble Sewing Club?
I’m planning to put magnets on the lids of baby food jars to stick them to the bottom of the shelf above my work area.
Genius!! I just put on some shelves, I am tempted to do that. I love jars!
I took an old spice rack the kind with jars on it. I use the jars to hold pi s, needles, tape measures, safety pins, buttons there are at least 12 jars all the same size it works great then my son hung peg board I keep my ribbon scissors , hoops, all on that. Everything is in site. Then I bought the folding baskets at Joann’s and every project has a bin.
That’s genius!! I bet it looks awesome, thank you so much for sharing this idea.
Great article. Thanks
My all time favorite reuse is the bottom rack of a dishwasher. Attach it to a wall or just stand it up on its side.
It’s like all those prongs were made to hold my thread spools!
The silverware tray holds my scissors, rulers, markers, etc. and can be carried around by the handle.
Happy sewing ❤️
Genius! I’d love to see that!
I just read this, it’s 2025. But I’ve been working on getting my sewing room organized and just added a new man size work bench for tools. Everytime I would go out to the garage I would see my husband’s huge toolbox on wheels. So I asked for one for me. He help me pick out one with lots of drawers and with a work top. At 48” it fits in my room. I was able to remove 4 other in efficient pieces of furniture with just one. My sewing tools are so many different things. I have 3 different machines. And so many different attachments and threads. Now I have space for all the threads, machine attachments, ironing extras, pins, needles, etc. I could go on.
Hi Rajeana, I would love to see that! Would you like to share a picture on our Facebook Sewing Club??
I’m trying to post a picture, but if you follow me on Pinterest I’ve posted a picture there
Hi Rajeana. I can’t see it yet but you can always share your pictures on our Facebook Sewing Club: https://www.facebook.com/groups/482653578774083
I am at lost. After doing the six weeks challenge, my room has become back a disaster. Only one day five hrs later I just gave up on being organized. I am a very distracted person who keeps jumping from one project to another. I am 70 yrs old and sewing is my therapy, so I guess I will always be a Mess
Hi Patty,
I completely understand. It is not easy to keep sewing rooms clean and organized. As I said in this post is more a matter of consistency than poor out massive deep cleanings every single day.
But there is also the side on which some people simply rather have “creative messes” (that’s how I call them lol). My only advice for you will be to dig out through your stuff every now and then to remember what and where you have.
You missed out my fave, frezzer tray for water bottle ice sticks, handy for scissors, seam rippers, pencils, pens, screwdrivers, pliers, awls, turning tools Etc. Etc.
All for less than 5 bucks.
OMG!!! I can’t believe it! You are right. I need to add that to this organizer’s list ASAP.
LOL, I have just got one of those and didn’t think about the connection.
I am in the process of turning a popcorn tin into a big spool of thread. I plan to keep hand sewing projects in it, along with the small cookie tin I am also decorating to look like a crazy quilt (to hold thread and scissors and needles) because I have to be extra.
I am so waiting to see this Lorna! Please share it with us on our Sewing Club!
