Ironing Board DIY Step by step

You won’t believe this. But I think it was 3+ years ago that I bought this ironing board. And this will be the first time I change the cover.

Yes, I know, please don’t judge me…

I have to say that I am a little ashamed of showing you the state of the “before” picture. I can’t believe I let it turn to this.

It has holes and burned spots everywhere!

Not to mention I turned it inside out when the right side of the fabric began to look bad.

The poor thing even got to a point where the padding was so thin, that I was practically pressing my sewing projects against the metal base.

But better late than never, right??

With this DIY tutorial, you will have your ironing board cover ready for setting up your sewing room in no time.

Combined with bright green bias tape turned out to be a thousand times better than the original one.

Taking a step back, I could say that I would increase the width of the bias. But I only had this pre-made half and inch bias, so I went with it.

In fact, you can control the width by making your own custom bias tape at home.

Overall I think it looks lovely and stylish.

The best part of it is that it took me almost no time to sew it!

Today I want to show you how you can make an ironing board cover too to replace your old ones easy and fast.

And without turning the whole board upside down!!

Supplies Needed:

To make this project you are going to need the following list of materials:

Making the Pattern

The first thing to do is to draft a pattern of the ironing board by tracing it directly over the board itself.

I have never quite understood why on most Iron board cover tutorials you had to place your fabric on the floor and make the new pattern with the ironing board upside down.

For me, it was not only unnecessary but also time-consuming.

You definitely don’t need to take that extra effort.

It is just a matter of laying your new fabric on top of your board and tracing the edges with the help of your chalk.

Don’t cut it yet!!

Now going to use the line you just traced to add a ¾” of the seam allowance.

½” of that will be to leave extra room for the padding and ¼” will be for the sewing allowance.

Adding the bias

Once you added the seam allowance cut through that line is time to sew the bias on which the cord is going to pass through.

To do this, fold the Ironing cover in half and pin the first layer of bias by folding one end of it 1/4″.

Then pin that end to the halfway mark of the cover, matching right sides.

Start sewing at 1/4″ from the edge. From the middle of the back of the cover to the other end.

If you want you can pin the bias along the curves to it is easier to sew.

Adding a new layer of bias.

Turn the ironing cover to the right side and repeat the last steps to have a new layer of bias but on the other side of the cover.

Then press down both layers of the bias tape.

Adding the cord

Take a small safety pin and tie the cord to the end of it.

You are going to pin the safety pin to any area of your iron cover and then pass it between the two layers of bias tape.

pin and cord

Put a pin at the beginning of the bias and start sewing to close this both layers together.

Make sure you won’t sew over the cord!

In the end, it should look like this.

Adding the padding to the base of the iron board

To cut the padding you are going to the same thing as with the fabric cover.

Lay the padding on top of the base of the board and with the help of the boarders guide yourself to cut the material to the same shape as the board.

Cover your board

That is it!!

The only thing left is to cover your board with your new brand ironing board cover that you manged perfectly to DIY.

Pull the cord ends to fit and secure your cover and you are ready to go.

Instructions

1. Make the Pattern.

Draw a pattern of the ironing board by tracing it directly onto the board itself, now I'll use the line you just traced to add ¾” of the seam allowance.

2. Adding the Bias.

Fold the ironing cover in half and pin the first bias layer by folding one of its ends 1/4″, then pin that end to the cover middle mark, matching the right sides.

Start sewing 1/4" from the edge. From the middle of the back of the cap to the other end.

3. Adding a New Bias Layer.

Turn the ironing cover to the right side and repeat the last steps to have a new bias layer, then press down both layers of bias tape.

4. Adding the Cable.

Take a small safety pin and tie the cord to the end and then thread it between the two layers of bias tape.

Put a pin at the beginning of the bias and start sewing to close both layers together.

5. Adding the Padding to the Ironing Board Base.

To cut the padding you are going to do the same as with the fabric cover, place the padding on top of the base of the table and draw the outline.

6. Cover your Board.

Cover your board with your new ironing board cover and pull the ends of the cord to tighten and secure your cover and you're ready to go.

  1. I didn’t exactly follow your tutorial, but it gave me the confidence to try. I did make a new cover for my ironing board. I just used the old cover for a pattern. It turned out great!!

    • Thank you so much! Yes, store-bought ones last next to nothing. Plus this way you can choose a better print that matches your sewing room decor!

    • Because the fabric might get deformed or stretched with time. And it’s kind of easier to just trow the fabric over the board and trace

  2. Thanks for this post. Should I do anything differently if I’m using silver “Teflon” fabric for the cover instead of cotton? I find my iron drags with the cotton cover, and the item I’m ironing doesn’t slide off the ironing board, but clings to it somehow (static electricity, maybe). I feel it slows me down and I want to go back to the silver cover.
