I don’t even know where to begin this week’s post.

This month has been the craziest!!

Not only did my Serger Machine decide to die, but the atelier has been so busy!!

I am making a couple of attires for a finalist in a beauty contest (totally unrelated to this blog/post).

And I have been working on very detailed garments.

If you want to take a peek, follow me on Instagram

I finished the pattern for the dress slip a couple of weeks ago, but it wasn’t until today that I could sit down and write this for you to have.

But here it is, and here I am. So let’s get sewing!

What is a Slip Dress?

slip dress pattern free

Joseph Antony defined a Slip Dress as “ (…) a woman’s undergarment worn beneath a dress or skirt. A full slip hangs from the shoulders, usually by means of narrow straps, and extends from the breast to the fashionable skirt length.”

Do you remember last month’s Half-Slip tutorial

It works the same.

In theory, a dress slip is meant to be worn inside your garments.

This helps that your undergarment’s edges won’t show on the outside.

This garment was a must-have for older generations.

It was a sign of a feminine and delicate lady. I happened to know some of my readers still have their vintage ones.

My friends of My Golden Thimble Sewing Club (our FB sewing group) and I were lucky enough to see them when a reader shared the pictures with us.

Where to wear a Slip Dress Pattern?

For me, it was all about the hot summer nights.

No!! I don’t mean that, you kinky lady. All though, the design is pretty sexy. Isn’t?

I actually mean the super hot weather of summer that makes me wish I could sleep in a pool or in the freezer.

So I am using it to sleep in.

And I have to tell you that this is one of my favorite pajamas of all.

Is not only super comfortable to wear, but it also makes me feel super pretty and confident.

This garment is considered a vintage item today because most clothes nowadays are made with commercial fast fashion techniques and thicker fabrics.

I guess if you use that kind of knit fabric (a little bit thicker) and choose your design carefully, you could maybe use this Slip Dress to go out.

I have seen this look. And I just love how it looks.

It will be perfect for a casual party or just to be at home.

Let’s hope you think so because it looks really nice.

How do you make a fitted Slip Dress Pattern?

This dress will fit perfectly around your body. But if you want it to be even more fitted, you can add darts or a cut on the back, as I did.

I always need to modify my patterns, especially in the waist area. That’s why I got so good at making pants waist smaller.
In the case of dresses, I always make a cut on the back to take more waist measurements. This is the perfect example of it.

In the video tutorial, you can see how the back of my dress has a curve that goes in on the waist area.

That cut helps the dress fall more naturally on the curve that my body makes from the back of my waist to the butt.

If I were to skip this curve/cut, the back of my dresses would make a pretty weird fabric bunch because of the excess of fabric.

Now, if you don’t have any of these vast curves problems, you can opt for a more straightforward solution. You can, for example, use full darts on the front or the back of your dress.

Add lace and soft details!

Even though I own a lot of pajamas. I didn’t own anything this sexy.

I am more in between a “sleep like a homeless” or “the funny pajama” kind of girl.

That kind of makes my “sexy” nights not that sexy.

You see, I believe in wearing what makes us comfortable and happy.

But I also think that the right kind of clothes can make a huge difference in both our self-esteem and attitude.

That’s why I was so happy to make this design.

Not only to be fresher at night but also to go to bed feeling sexier.

I believe the lace was the thing that gave this dress slip the elegant vintage look.

And I just gotta say that I love it!

I made this design from another pattern I owned and it will fit a size medium to large in hips.

As it is made for knit fabrics this is an estimate and if you use 100% 4-way stretch knit fabric there will be more likely to fit bigger sizes.

How to sew Spaguetti Straps to a dress?

Spaghetti straps are the narrower types of straps for a dress. You can make them by cutting a bias strip about 1″ wide, folding it in half, closing it at 1/4″, and turning it inside out.

Of course, as simple as that is, it’s not what I did.

Here is what you need to know about my creative process.

Sometimes, I just wing it.

When I make things for myself, I allow myself to break the rules, explore, and experiment with my process.

For this design, I wanted to have “seamless” straps.

This means I didn’t want to attach a bias and have the seam lines showing.

Also, as this was supposed to be a quick project, it doesn’t have facings either.

So this won’t be your standard straps sewing instructions.

If you want, you could use instead of one of my 3 easy techniques to sew bias tape.

In the video tutorial, I am showing you the best I can, the technique I used to make this happen.

But I did want to warn you beforehand that it is not the easy way to go.

So, if you don’t feel confident about it, I suggest you make the straps with a bias binding technique. You can find it here in my 20 knit fabric tutorials you need to know it here.

Overall, this is still a very easy and quick sewing project, so there is no reason to be scared.

How many yards of Fabric do I need to Sew a Slip Dress Pattern?

To make this slip, you will need one yard of at least 50% 2-way (across grain) stretch fabric.

Through the lace is optional, I strongly suggest it. You will need 1 yard.

You will need both a Serger and a Sewing machine.

And finally, matching thread.

You will need then:

After you have your pattern ready, cut the pieces according to the instructions in the pattern, and follow this sew along with the video here or follow the step-by-step sewing instructions below.

2. Match the back and front bodice with the right side of the fabrics facing together.

3. Fold the neckline band in half lengthwise and press.

Then, pin the band to the neckline from the start of the strap part to the end of the other side.

Pin it to the right side of the fabric and serge it.

Then, press the seams down.

Fold in half and make a diagonal stitch to form the “V” neckline.

You can do it by hand or with your sewing machine.

4. Measure the length of the strap band from the beginning of both ends.

Make a mark.

Fold the band in half and make a cut on the strap of exactly 1/4″.

Pin that area and serge the length of the strap.

Then serge along, making sure you serge only until the 1/4″ cut.

5. Turn the straps inside out.

Fold and press the rest of the back bodice band.

Now, you are going to match from the start of the back band from the start to the strapping zone of the bodice until the other end.

Serge and then press the seams down.

Then, secure the straps to the back 4″ from the center.

6. Serge the hem edge.

Fold the hem 1/2″ and sew it in a straight line.

  1. As a newbie, I needed more clarity on attaching the adjustable straps. Mine turned out with the seam facing outward. I couldn’t tell from the photo which side should be up when sewing them on. Otherwise I’m very happy with the pattern and instructions. It’s very comfy and cool.

All though I recomend you do this pattern with knit fabrics! It won’t work on denim because it has a negative ease. 😀

  5. Hi! Is there any chance the sizes will be extended farther? I was so excited to see that the pattern came in 5x since that’s usually what I need in other sewing patterns, but I’m still 6ish inches outside the size range for this one 🙁

  6. Hi, I absolutely love the design of this dress, it’s so gorgeous! However, when I received the email and downloaded the pattern in A4 size, the first four papers on the printing map were not on the document. So instead I had 11 papers not 15. Could you possibly email me the papers on the first row because I really want to make this dress 🙁
