Are you ready?

DIY Sewing Pattern Weights Donut and Cookie shaped Fast and Mess-Free.

I will have you know my recent biggest secret. Its name is Modeling Soft Air Dry Clay.

I know that I said is not Clay, and the name says Clay. But is not. For once, you don’t have to bake this.

The way I can describe it is by saying that is like a marshmallow play-dough.

With the difference that is softer and fluffier, and air dries, holding its smooth shape wonderfully.

I know, right??

Your secret ingredient was in your kid’s play toys all along.

And it is F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C.

Bellow in the materials list, you will find the link to purchase this beauty clay on Amazon.

I swear, for my stash! I discovered this material in the school section of my local craft store. It immediately caught my attention.

I said to myself…

“Well, that sounds nice. I like foam… and I like play-dough… but, What can you even do with this kind of thing besides kids’ little shapes of animals or things like that…?”

And then it hit me…

I took about 3 packs of Moldable foamy, then went to the hardware store and bought 24 washers (didn’t use them all), and put myself to work.

I ended up with the cutest pattern weights I’ve ever had!!

They aren’t only pretty, but they are also soft to the touch and a free mess project (not to mention the fun, of course).

I want you to know that, as you can see, I made a try-out on another kind of cookie and a Cinamon Roll Pattern weight.

I didn’t love them as much as the chocolate cookies and the donuts, but…

Please tell me if you would like me to make a tutorial about other dessert Pattern weights like Cinnamon Rolls or even Macaroons in the comments below, and I will for sure make some for you.

To find these materials, you can click on the link to the list above or get them in your nearest Craft store.

To make this project, you will need:

DIY Dessert Pattern Weights

Now let’s see how they are done.

♥ Cookie Pattern Weights ♥

Step 1. Choose your weight

For each one of the Cookie Pattern Weight, I used 2 Washers (60 gms.)

Just to make them less bulky.

Step 2. Mix the Foam colors

To make a bready-look foam, I mixed the beige/yellow-ish foam with a little bit of brown foam and just a pinch of orange.

Step 3. Cover the washers

Then I took the foam and used my hands and fingers to cover the washers.

I made sure to make the foam look with an irregular finish, as this is the look that chocolate chip cookies usually have.

Step 4. “Sprinkle” the chips

I made little balls of brown foam and pinched the top a little to form a little triangle. Then I just place them on top of the cookie in random places.
Once finished, let them dry for a day.

Step 5. Give them a coat (Optional)

For this step, I used simple plain, White School Glue. Take a brush and apply a very LIGHT coat of glue or your favorite coating material. Finally, just let them dry for a whole night.

Step 1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 of the Cookie Pattern Weights Tutorial ⇑

As donuts are bulkier, I chose to use 3 washers (90 gms) instead of 2.

This made the Pattern weight heavier, which is what I wanted as I tend to use this for fabric weights, not only for patterns.

Step 2. Cover the washers with the “bread”

For this “bread” Donut, I used the same mix as I did with the cookie pattern weights.

Made a ball and then used my fingers to make the donut shape.

Making sure that I leave a hole in the middle… Because… well… I donut.

Step 3. Choose the flavor of your pattern weight

The next step is to use a different color of Moldable foam to coat the donut.

Use your fingers to push the foam to make it look like is dripping.

Step 4. Decor!

Make a long strip with a contrasting color of foam and make sprinkles or use it to “drip” it over the donut. Yummy!

Once you are happy with your Donut design, let it dry for at least half a day.

(Optional) Step 5. Make it shine, baby!

Use your favorite coating to give a LIGHT coat to each of your DIY dessert Pattern Weights to give them a slight shine.

Please tell me if you would like me to make a tutorial about other dessert Pattern weights like Cinnamon Rolls or even Macaroons!

And make sure to save your leftover Air Dry Clay with kitchen plastic, so they don’t dry, and you can use it again.

  1. I think it would be cute to make a pie and put it in a deep small tin. I bought a small metal feeder for a small animal. It came with the holder that you don’t need.
    Very inexpensive.

  2. These are awesome. Dollar Tree sells air dry clay now I have a use for it. And yes you can paint it when dry before you seal it.
Thanks for the idea for weights.

  3. I have been hanging on to some air dry clay. All I have is white though. Can I add some acrylic. Paint to a ball so I don’t have to buy more clay?
I am going to make magnets so I can keep track of them in my very messy sewing room I painted an old cookie sheet and hung it up for my magnetic tins that hold all of my different kinds of sewing pins.

    • Yes, I believe you can totally add paint to your white clay. I will advise though that you try it in a little piece of it before. Just to make sure.

  4. Thank you so much for this tutorial! Can you give any indication of how durable these weights are? Have you had them now for a couple of years with no issues? Thanks in advance for your help!

    • You are welcome Tanisha 🙂 Yes, they are super durable! I made them in 2018 and I still use them today. They look as they were new, perfect condition! (except for the one I pin into to see what would happen… don’t) I strongly recommend you coat them though, if you don’t they will get dirty very quickly.

  6. Dafhtne, your donut pattern weights are so realistic. Love them!!! I’m still using scissors, a sticky tape holder and whatever’s handy. I need to make some of your DIY weights. I’ve showcased your tutorial today.

    • Hi Pam! Thank you so much for the comments! They do look realistic!! When I first made them I kinda wanted to give them a bite. LOL
I think the Air Dry Clay and a soft layer of glue are they key to this. You can actually touch them and squish them a little bit, so cool.

Thank you so much for Showcasing this post!! It is a true honor to be on your site.
