How can you make quilts in a day?

If you follow the right steps and shortcuts, you can have an entire quilt sewn from start to finish in only one day.
Choose an easy pattern or design from the list in this post, and get either pre-cut blocks or strips of fabric.
Prepare all the materials you need ahead of time. This includes pre-cut squares, batting, backing fabric, bias tape, and your sewing tools.
I find that laying all my materials over the table helps me to go faster as I know where everything is at all times.
Finally, choose a size that you can finish soon. The best size you can choose to make a quilt in a day is a baby blanket or a lap quilt.
You can also opt to make pillow covers to achieve a quick quilt to make in a day, like this pattern of a quilt lumbar pillow I made with 2″ scrap squares.

What is the quickest quilt to sew?

One of the quickest quilts to sew is the Charm Patchwork Square Quilt.
This is a beginner-friendly design that you can finish in a matter of hours. And the reason for that is that this adorable design involves using pre-cut fabric squares that have a fair size of about 5″ wide.
This makes sewing this quilt even faster. In our video tutorial below, you can see that there are a couple of options for charm quilt designs.
You can make a 4-square quilt or a 9-square quilt. Once it is all put together, each one will give you a different result.
If you want to make this quilt even faster, then look for the charm packs available at your local fabric stores or these cute square bundles on Amazon.
- Classics Plus Meadow collection from FreeSpirit
- Designed by Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably & Philip Jacobs
- Charm Pack includes 42 5-inch squares
These bundle square packs come with coordinated fabric squares from the same design collection or designer. This ensures that you will have color harmony in your quilt without too much effort on your part.
Sew the squares together in rows to make an effortless and easy quilt pattern in just a day.
Which is a good quilt for a beginner?

I used free motion quilting for my free fabric quilt boxes sewing pattern, and it took forever!
Instead, use a simple diagonal stitch to quilt as I did with my quilted Sewing Machine Cover pattern.
It is so much quicker and uncomplicated.

Tips and Tricks to Make a Quilt in Just One Day
Making a quilt in just one day might be challenging. But worry not—I am going to share my best tips and tricks so you can achieve the most gorgeous quilt in a hurry!
Tip 1: Get Precut Fabric Bundles
Understanding Fat quarters and other pre-cut fabric bundles will make a humongous change in the way that you quilt.
These amazing bundles and fat quarters come with the fabric squares in the exact measurement you need just to start sewing. You can get JellyRolls, Pre-cut squares, and even pre-made binding for your project.
This will save you a lot of valuable cutting time. Plus, they come in a fantastic set of themed colors and patterns, so you don’t need to consider combinations.
Tip 2: Get all your materials ready the day before.
Make a list of every item you need to complete this project. And be super specific!!
From the fabrics to the threads and even your DIY Bias tape binding.
Then, put all of these materials over your table and organize them so you will just get in there and grab what you need as you need it.
Having your materials at hand will save you time searching and guessing. Oh, and consider having two or three seam rippers, too!
Tip 3: Choose an easy quilt design
Instead of going for an intricate design, try to choose a simple and straightforward design so you can speed up the sewing process.
The easiest quilt designs are the 9-patch, 4-patch, strips, and, for the confident ones, the bargello quilt.
These are really easy quilts to put together! So, try one of these designs if you are in a hurry and want to finish quickly.

I have a great desire to do a cream/white on white king size quilt for my bed. I love pastels. Thank you for asking. Love your columns.
Hi Judu! 😀 I love that idea. I want to add some cream colors in my bedroom too. This will be fantastic.
The two baby quilts and the Brick Ladder Quilt are my favs here. I think it’s the soft colors of the baby quilts that attract me. I’ve made a brick ladder quilt. It was fun and went together fast. How would you quit it with diagonal stitch?
Thank you for sharing these. I have two old tops that I have been working on, they were my Grandmother’s and Mother’s from years ago. I have to embroidery them and then find some way to put the old material together. I’m afraid that when I start to put it together it’s not going to match up because to material is so old. Any suggestions
I would find similar colors and make some of the blocks of the old quilts the center blocks for the new ones…
Where is the link for #16, I think I could figure it out if there was a full picture. I see several I would like to make. Great article, thank you.
I agree with Maureen. If we can’t get the link to the pattern, can we get the size of the squares for #16? That would be a big help. Thanks.
Hi Maureen! The size of the squares for that quilt (as far as my knowledge) are 9″ by 9″
There are places that make quilts for cancer patients they will take the quilt tops and finish them though they do Like a certain size. In Australia one organisation is called Comfort Quilts I’m sure they have them in the States
Too.
Thank you so much for that info June!
Elaine
I love to put together quilt tops but hate finishing the batting, backing and trim. Are there places I can sell the tops?
Hi Carol! I am right there with you. I am not aware of places to sell the tops of quilts, but I will leave this comment open so see if anyone knows!
My quilt guild makes quilts for Headstart and other preschool places. They also do charity quilts. Perhaps your local guild would welcome the tops to finish and use.
I love that! Thank you so much for sharing
