To start sewing at any age is a fantastic journey full of creative rewards like dopamine, fabrics, and many new sewing projects. You will absolutely look back in a few years and think how learning to sew was the best decision you could have made.
A lot of people are intimidated by sewing. And I get it.
It seems like a lifetime of information, from how to use any sewing machine for the first time to what types of materials and tools you need.
The internet is full of great resources that can provide you with a guide on how to start this hobby. But the thing is, you need to know what you are looking for first.
Otherwise, you will surely get overwhelmed by the immense amount of information there is out there.
That is why in this post, I will try to summarize, at my best, what type of information you need for this.
How can I learn to sew?

Learning to sew only requires an amount of technical information.
Knowing the name and functions of sewing machine parts and choosing the best beginner sewing tools are some of the first things you will learn.
You can start by learning how to sew by hand. Then you can learn how to use a sewing machine and a serger machine.
After that, you will be able to choose your first sewing project. And this is where it starts getting fun because there is an infinite amount of beginner sewing projects you can choose from.
I recommend you read this Complete Guide to Learn how to Sew, so you can get a better understanding of what you will need to know.
How do I start with sewing books?
Before buying a sewing book, make sure that it is a beginner sewing book that teaches the topic you want to learn.
There are a lot of books out there that don’t contain enough basic information or even sewing instructions for some projects.
Even if it is a book about sewing projects for beginners, it might have no detailed sewing instructions.
This is because a book of sewing projects for beginners could assume you already know how to sew and, therefore, only explain the project broadly.
The type of sewing branch is the second thing to check, especially if you buy beginner sewing books for others.
For example. There are general books about sewing, pattern-making, machine sewing, quilting, embroidery, etc.
So, pick what you would like to learn first, and go from there.
What is the best sewing book for beginners?
There are two books I always recommend for beginners, and those are Sewing for Dummies and The Sewing Book.
Sewing for Dummies
The Sewing for Dummies is a complete guide that shows you how to sew from the beginning.
It has a lot of helpful pictures and illustrations to use as references. But what I like the most about this book is that the explanations are very detailed. It uses a language that is easy to understand at any level.
The author, Jan Saunders, does not just assume you might or should know anything. She explains it as much as possible, so you don’t have doubts at all.
Sewing for Dummies is a book that teaches you about tools, fabrics, and the basic techniques you need for sewing. But it doesn’t stop there. You will also learn about making clothes and even how to make home decor sewing projects. You will even learn about all sorts of materials used in sewing and how to use them.
So, if you have the budget for one book only. I definitely urge you to get this sewing book for beginners.
The Sewing Book
The second beginner sewing book I recommend is The Sewing Book by Alisson Smith.
This full-color hardcover book contains a LOT of great information about sewing. It has over 300 techniques for machines, garment making, and sewing patterns.
I believe this book is for confident beginners. It goes deeper into dressmaking and patterns and doesn’t stay a lot in the basics.
The fun thing about this book is that it will guide you to make some excellent beginner sewing projects. For example, a bag and even a wrap skirt after teaching you the essentials of sewing.
As for the rest of my book recommendations, each has something special you will love. Check all the amazon sewing books for beginners I found for you.
