Dressing as a witch on Halloween has been a long tradition for ages. And one symbol of excellence for a witch is…

You guessed it. The pointy cone-shaped hat.

A witches’ hat has been a popular accessory associated with this holiday due to its historical, cultural, and iconic references.

They add an element of mystique and fantasy to any costume, and they are adaptable to any theme or decor you want to put on them.

But did you know where the pointy witch hat actually comes from?

History of Witch Hats

The iconic pointed hat most associated with witches can be traced to European cultures.

During the medieval and early modern periods, people thought witches wore hats or headdresses with pointed tops.

These hats were believed to help witches channel their magical powers, and soon, the hat became a symbol of a connection to the spirit world and the witches’ ability to draw energy from the heavens.

In reality, there is no actual evidence that the women who were associated with witchcraft during those times actually wore pointy hats as part of their “magical arsenal.”

In fact, conical hats had been worn by many cultures before that, like the ones used by the alewives (women who brewed ale for commercial sale) in Europe.

Then, around the early 1700s, England began to illustrate children’s books of supernatural tales by painting coned peaked hats on witches.

As a snowball and fast-forwarding to the 40s, the stereotypical witches’ attire we know today was born. All thanks to the famous movie “The Wizard of Oz,” in which an old ugly witch with a black cape and pointy hat paved the road of the image of witches as we know them today.

Why should I DIY my own Halloween costume?

Depending on how serious you are with your costume, making it on your own can actually be more budget-friendly than buying it in a store.

There are dozens of free custom sewing patterns and ideas (like my list of Disney Costumes DIY Ideas) that you can find online. That means you can make your costume out of clothes you already have or use cheap fabric and a few shiny notions you might already have at home.

Making your own witch costume will also allow you to customize your character to your liking with elements that fit your personality or taste. This will ensure you stand out from the crowd with a unique costume rather than a generic one from a store.

Think about it; you can even recreate your favorite Harry Potter witch costume!

It will also be a great excuse to involve your family in the process and make it a bonding experience. So, If you enjoy getting creative and want to make Halloween extra special, making your own costume can be a really satisfying experience.

What size is the pattern for a Witch Hat?

This pattern I am offering is a part of my free patterns list for all my readers and includes many other designs that I have made and shared with you.

You can find this pattern in 4 sizes of head measurements: Adults (22 1/2″), Kids (21 1/2″), Toddlers (19 1/2″), Infants (18 1/2″). To find the measurement that best fits your head, use a measuring tape around your head from the forehead, passing it above your ears.

If you want to modify the size of this hat to make it smaller or bigger, do the following:

  1. Draw a line from the point of the cone to the base. Cut that line just before you reach 1/8″ near the point.
  2. Draw a line across the brim. Cut that line.
  3. To make it smaller, overlap the lines on the cone the amount you need. Example 1″ total. Then overlap the pieces of the brim one-half of the amount you overlapped on the cone, in this example you will overlap the brim pieces a total of 1/2″.
  4. To make it bigger, you will have to do the opposite, meaning that instead of overlapping the pieces, you will separate them “x” amount.

What can I use to decorate my Witch Hat?

There are many ways to customize your Witch hat to fit your costume or style. You can try and replicate a famous witch hat like one of the Anderson’s Sisters. It will be so cool if you are doing a Hocus Pocus Halloween DIY Decor this year. Or you can make your own design with these elements:

  • Ribbon and Fabric Trim: Add decorative ribbon, lace, or fabric trim to the brim or cone of your witch hat. You can use contrasting colors or patterns to create a striking visual effect.
  • Feathers: Glue feathers to the brim or attach them around the base of the cone for a mystical, ethereal look.
  • Beads and Sequins: Sew or glue beads, sequins, or rhinestones to create a sparkling, magical effect.
  • Spiderwebs and Spiders: Decorate your witch hat with faux spiderwebs and small plastic spiders for a spooky, Halloween-themed design.
  • Faux Flowers: Attach silk or fabric flowers to the hat for a more whimsical or garden witch-inspired look.
  • Gauze or Tulle: Drape gauze or tulle fabric over the hat to create a ghostly, witchy veil effect. You can layer it for a more dramatic appearance.
  • Faux Gemstones: Glue on faux gemstones or gems in the shape of stars, moons, or other mystical symbols to evoke a magical aura.
  • Broomstick or Wand: Attach a small broomstick or wand to the side of the hat to emphasize the witch theme.
  • Glow-in-the-Dark Paint: Add a touch of glow-in-the-dark paint to certain elements of your hat, such as stars or symbols, for an eerie glow when the lights go out.
  • Felt or Fabric Cutouts: Cut out felt or fabric shapes like moons, stars, cats, or bats, and glue or sew them onto the hat to create a themed design.
  • Luminous Eyes: Create a pair of glowing eyes by cutting out eye shapes from reflective or glow-in-the-dark fabric.
  • Cobwebs: Create cobweb patterns using black or white paint on a black hat to add a spooky Halloween vibe.

1. Download and Assemble the sewing pattern.

To get the free PDF sewing pattern, scroll down to the end of this post and click on the link to download.

Print the pattern in “Real Size” in your preferred paper size (letter and A4 options available).

Then, assemble it by trimming the edges and placing the pages next to each other with the help of the square numbers on the corners.

2. Cut your pieces on your fabric.

As my felt is thin, I cut each pattern piece twice to give my hat more body.

But if you have a thicker felt fabric, there is really no reason to do so or to follow the steps I am giving here to make the brim part of the hat more stable.

3. Press fusible interfacing on the brim.

Use the brim pattern piece to cut another layer on heavy-weight fusible interfacing. But this time, you are going to trim this last piece.

Cut ½” from the inner circle of the fusible interfacing’s brim and ¼” of the outer edge.

Then, press it with your iron to fuse it on the wrong side of one layer of the fabric.

4. Join the layers of the brim.

I decided to use hem tape to fuse the two layers of the brim, like the one you use on pants.

I used this because I didn’t want any bulks of hot glue between the two layers, and I didn’t want to wait for my cold glue to dry.

What I did was to cut strips and place them around the wrong side of the brim and then fill the empty spaces with more strips of the same tape.

Then, I placed both brim layers with the wrong sides of the fabrics facing together and used my iron to fuse them together.

The result was very clean and unnoticeable.

5. Sew the cone.

Fold the cone pattern piece in half and then sew the sides at one-half of an inch of seam allowance.

Press the seams open and turn inside-out.

6. Join the cone and the brim.

Now place the cone inside of the inner circle of the brim and match the seam allowances together.

Use pins or clips to hold the pieces together and then sew them at one-half of an inch seam allowance.

7. Optional Finishes*

You can skip this step if you are eager to start decorating your witch’s hat. But if you want a cleaner look, you can do the following.

Trim the two middle layers of seam allowance on the inner circle of the brim to reduce the bulk.

Then, finish that part with a bias tape of your favorite color. You can use store-bought bias tape or easy homemade bias tape of your own fabrics.

You can also sew bias tape to the outer edge of the brim to give it a cleaner and neater look.

Also, you can insert wire inside the bias tape of the outer edge to make sure the brim stays stiff and in a circular shape.

8. Decorate!

Use any elements you want for this purpose. Here are some options you can use to decorate your witch hat.

  • Ribbon and Fabric Trim: Add decorative ribbon, lace, or fabric trim to the brim or cone of your witch hat.
  • Faux Gemstones: Glue on faux gemstones or gems in the shape of stars or moons to evoke a magical aura.
