Who doesn’t loves free sewing patterns

The only thing better than a free sewing pattern is an easy and free sewing pattern. Wouldn’t you agree?

And that is everything you will find in this list.

Sewing a basic t-shirt pattern is one of the easiest knit fabric projects you can make by being a beginner with a serger machine.

I know that sewing a new t-shirt pattern is one of my non-thinking projects. You know, the ones. When you want to sew something quickly without putting too much effort and still getting a wonderful project out of it.

Even though some designs are more challenging than others, most of these free shirt patterns are beginner friendly.

If you don’t know or don’t want to use any of these sewing patterns to make your t-shirt, you still have other options.

You can, for example, copy the pattern out of your favorite t-shirt in your closet. You will need only a few materials like pattern maker paper, a ruler, and a marker to do that.

You can fold the t-shirt in half to copy only half of the pattern. This way, you will have a symmetrical pattern when cutting your fabrics. Use the seams of the garment as a guide and draw the shape of the t-shirt very close to it.

Then trace the neckline and the armholes.

Finally, trace the sleeve folding it in half. In this case, you will draft the first half (front) and then the second half (back). Add your seam allowances, and you are ready to go.

How much fabric do I need to make a T-shirt?

The amount of fabric needed to make a T-shirt will depend on your size and your pattern. But generally, you will need about 2 1/2 yards approximately to create a t-shirt.

For small to medium sizes, fabric consumption can be around 1 1/2″ yards. For plus-size sizes, it can go up to 3 yards.

Try looking for at least 60″ wide fabric so you can have enough space to pattern placement.

I also recommend buying more fabric than needed in case you have to cut one or more pieces of the pattern again due to a mistake.

What do I need to make a T-shirt?

To make a T-shirt, you will need knit fabric (preferably jersey with at least 50% 4-way stretch), thread, and a serger machine.

There are many types of knit fabrics you can choose from. The best ones for a garment like this are brushed knits, jerseys, and French terry.

As for the sewing machine, you don’t strictly need to have a serger to make a t-shirt. You can also sew it with a stretch stitch using your home sewing machine. Don’t worry because there are a lot of knit fabric tutorials that will make your life very easy.

How do I get the Free T-shirt Patterns?

Each one of these patterns comes from a different designer. Each designer has their own way of delivering these free PDF sewing patterns.

For some of these files, you must subscribe to a newsletter, add them to a shopping cart (with no charge) or follow other instructions.

So, make sure to read very carefully the instructions of the website from which you want the pattern. It might be tricky, but hey! They are all free, so it’s worth a couple of extra seconds reading the instructions.

Most of the patterns will come with either written, picture, illustrated, or video tutorials. For the ones that don’t come with instructions, worry not. With this tutorial on How to sew a t-shirt two different ways, you will be able to sew any pattern in this list.
