I just made the cutest DIY Crop Top from a T-shirt.

As you know, I am always looking for cool ways to improve my wardrobe. And this time, I decided to use an old pink t-shirt and transform it into a crop top.

I didn’t want just another simple t-shirt cut in the middle. Instead, I was looking for something with lovely detail.

And, I think I found it.

Have you seen the mom jeans outfits lately??

They rock!

I just can’t believe that a pair of jeans can be this comfortable. I particularly love the high-waisted ones.

Do you remember when the low cuts were on style? The horror!!

Thankfully now high-waisted pants are here. And it seems like they are staying.

Of course, some of the best tops to use with high-waisted pants are Crop Tops. Unfortunately, I don’t own so many crop tops. So, it was time to upgrade my closet.

Even though I love to make my clothes from scratch using sewing patterns, that’s not always an option.

It might be that I don’t have the time, or sometimes I am just looking for something quick and simple.

That’s how I came up with this cute little idea to transform my old boring t-shirt.

How can I cut my t-shirt into a crop top?

To transform a regular t-shirt into a crop top, you can simply cut it in half. But if you are looking for a more remarkable design and clean finishes, then you will need to use your sewing skills.

Don’t worry. It’s pretty straightforward. Even if you have never sewn anything before, if you know how to make the basic stitches by hand, you got this tutorial in the bag.

We are going to make a twist knot on the front. And just for fun, you can add some extra seams as I did here.

How to make a DIY Crop Top from a T-shirt?

1. Remove the Sleeves.

Use your fabric scissors to cut the seams of the armholes out of the t-shirt.

Another option is to undo the stitches using a seam ripper.

Make sure that the sleeves are complete and that you don’t cut more of the t-shirt bodice but the seam allowance.

2. Open the sides.

Lay your t-shirt perfectly flat on a surface.

Then, use your scissors to cut the sides from the hem to the armholes.

Repeat on both sides.

3. Cut the center.

Open the t-shirt separating the back from the top.

The t-shirt should still be joined from the shoulders.

Use a ruler or any sewing measuring tool to mark the exact center on the front of the t-shirt.

Cut the center.

4. Cut the sides.

Make two cuts on each side of the t-shirt measuring half of the side lengthwise.

On a large t-shirt cut about 5 ½” and on a small to medium t-shirt 3 ½”.

5. Cross the cuts.

Take the bottom part of the right side of the t-shirt and place it under the bottom part of the left side.

This will make a crossed “knot” on the center front of the t-shirt.

Make sure the right side of the fabric is facing up.

6. Sew the side cuts closed.

Turn the t-shirt upside down.

Join the open sides and sew them from the outside to the center at ¼”.

Cut the excess if any.

7. Make more cuts.

You can leave the knot as it is or you can make more cuts.

To do more cuts fold the front of the t-shirt and make new seams diagonally.

You can use these cuts to fit the garment close to your body.

8. Cut the fabric excess.

If you need to cut the excess fabric from the new darts and cuts.

Finally, make a new cut on the whole t-shirt as shown in this picture with the white dotted lines.

This will make a new hem and cut the t-shirt to a crop top length.

9. Form the new neckline and sew the sides.

Remove the collar band from the t-shirt.

Now make two diagonally cuts to make a new “V” neckline.

Fold the seams towards the back of the t-shirt and make a hem around the new neckline.

Now, close the sides of the t-shirt. You can try it on to see how much you want to take in.

10. Sew a Hem

Fold the hem on the bottom and sew at ½”.

11. Join the sleeves.

Finally, take the sleeves and pin them back into the armholes of the t-shirt.

Sew them at ¼” or ½”.
