Reading is one of my favorite hobbies (right next to sewing and dancing). So, making bookmarks has become a fun way to pass the time whenever I want to make a simple project that doesn’t take up much time.

That is why I recommend that all beginners who are just looking for a good starter project try fabric bookmarks first.

You can genuinely make this Fabric Corner Bookmark really your own by experimenting with the embellishments or the fabrics you choose, so don’t be afraid to experiment with this project.

Materials:

1. Cut 3 Squares of fabric

For this tutorial, I am making our fabric squares 1/2″ bigger than the standard measurements usually used in these projects, which gives a total of 4 1/2″.

You can cut your fabrics using the free pattern provided at the end of this post, or you can use your quilting rulers to cut 3 perfect squares measuring 4 1/2″ by  4 1/2″.

2. Embroider the design

I did the following to easily align the embroidery flower design perfectly on each square.

First, I drew two perpendicular lines that measured 1/2″ on two sides of one of the fabric squares.

I am going to use a technique called floating the embroidery design, which involves adding the piece of fabric you want to embroider on top of the hoop with the stabilizer already on.

I prepared the embroidery frame of my machine with a stabilizer, as usual. Then, I aligned the needle of my embroidery machine to start at the very corner of the design. I used basting spray on the back of my square and left it to dry for about 15 seconds.

Finally, I positioned the point where both of the perpendicular lines met exactly below where my needle was.

After all that, the machine did the rest, and I only had to change the thread colors.

3. Press the fusible interfacing on the back

To make our bookmarks more sturdy, we must apply fusible interfacing on the back of our fabrics.

I skipped this step because the fabric I am using is heavy outdoor canvas (I told you, you could use ANY fabric scraps!), which is pretty sturdy on its own. So, I didn’t need to do this step.

If you are working with quilting cotton or similar fabrics, my recommendation is that you use medium-weight fusible interfacing. Press it on the wrong side of the fabrics of the three squares, and you will be good to go.

4.  Stack and sew

To make the front part of our fabric bookmark, we need to fold our embroidered square diagonally in half with the wrong sides together. You can then press to keep it folded.

After that, you will make a “sandwich” on that triangle with the other two squares of fabric, pinning them with their right sides together.

Use your sewing machine to sew around the square at 1/2″, but leave about 1 1/2″ of one side open.

5. Cut out the corners and turn.

To get those nice, sharp corners on your project, it’s super essential to gently trim away any extra fabric from the seam allowances at the corners.

This will help reduce bulk and make it way easier to turn those corners inside out. Check out this image for a visual guide on how to do it!

6. Make a topstitch.

Topstitching is a technique that helps us achieve excellent finishes on our projects. Topstitching our fabric corner bookmark will make the seams stay nice and flat, giving it a more professional finish.

You can use the same thread color or a contrasting one if you want it to stand out from your design.

And that was it!! You did it!

Wasn’t this easy?? Plus, with the holiday season just around the corner, this project would make a perfect Christmas gift or stocking stuffer for your loved ones. Spread some joy and creativity this season by sharing your work with the world!

Did you enjoy working on this project and are proud of the final result? Why not share it with your friends and family on social media?

  1. This is a fun sewing project. I used my imagination and figured out a way to use the cut-work corner of a vintage linen napkin. I had to sew the corner on after I turned the square. Then I found another napkin with an embroidered flower, this one worked with pattern given here. Thank you.
