Many types of shirts can be differentiated by the different types of collars and cuffs they have.

It happens to me all the time.

And I know that sometimes it can be difficult to tell them apart. That’s not the case with the different types of pants, where you can quickly know which is which.

We can’t forget a vital part of a shirt we will discuss here. We have a lot of button styles, each with a different design and purpose.

If you don’t know a lot about buttons, I recommend that you read this picture guide with the essential types of buttons. It is a complete guide with names and uses.

How many pieces does a Shirt have?

A shirt has a total of 11 pieces, such as the collar band, the collar, the armhole, the front placket, the sleeve, the buttonholes and buttons of the placket, the yoke, the sleeve placket, the buttonhole and buttons, and the cuff. Of course, the bodice too.

What fabrics are Shirts made of?

Of a wide variety, the most popular fabrics to make shirts are cotton, linen, silk, and poplin. The chosen fabric will depend on the weather and the occasion for using the shirt.

For example, if you want to stay fresh in summer, you should wear a cotton shirt. On the contrary, if you want to stay warm, you are better of with flannel.

There are also hundreds of styles and prints you can choose for shirts.

As it is a pretty basic garment, designers play a lot with prints, embroidery, and small details like appliques.

In this graphic, you can see the different types of fabrics used to sew dress shirts and the different properties of each one.

1. Collar Band.

The collar band of a shirt is the piece that makes the collar fit around the neck.

2. Collar.

The collar is the part of a shirt that fastens around or frames the neck. It is made from a separate piece of fabric.

3. Armhole.

It is a hole through which you put your arm and where you can put a sleeve.

4. Front Placket.

The fabric is folded back and sewn with fused interfacing to make it stronger. This is the part on which buttonholes are on one side and buttons on the other.

5. Sleeve.

A sleeve is the part of the garment that covers the arm. It can have different lengths.

6. Cuff.

The cuff of a shirt is a part of the shirt that encloses the wrist. This piece of fabric is sewn to the end of a shirt sleeve.

7. Buttonholes and Buttons of the Placket

The buttonholes are reinforced holes in the plackets through which the buttons cross. They will allow you to join two pieces of the garment together temporarily.

A button is a small, usually round object sewn in the placket to join pieces of the garment together.

8. Sleeve Placket.

The sleeve placket is a piece of fabric sewn on the opening of the end of the sleeve. You can fasten it with buttons and opens to easily pass your hand through the cuff. It expands the space for your hand and can also be a design element.

9. Pleats.

You can find the pleats of a shirt at the back of the shirt’s bodice, under the yoke. The pleats allow the user to have freedom of movement with his/her arms.

10. Yoke.

It is a functional piece that contributes to and enhances the bodice of the shirts, especially the pleats on them.

11. Bodice

The bodice of the shirt has 3 pieces of fabric, two on the front and one on the back. It is the part that covers the torso of your body.

Now you are an expert on shirts! I bet now it will be easier for you to identify and name all the variants on the designs.
