Leather goods have always been a craft of fascination to me.

Even though I haven’t tried that much of that in my career, I dare to say I have made a few pretty cool leather patterns of my own.

I have even got my beginner’s leather-making sewing kit which I have used to make some of these incredible free pdf leather patterns.

Until now, I have made several cardholders (some of the easiest projects to start with), leather totes, wallet patterns (very simple ones), and great leather cuffs.

If you ever want to venture into leather sewing, this is the perfect time to do so. Get yourself a beginner’s leather sewing kit and use one of these free patterns to do your first project.

How do you put patterns on leather?

As you might imagine, using patterns on a leather canvas is pretty different than doing it on a fabric canvas. Leather comes in irregular shapes.

I would rather not go deep into why that is in this post. Better to go straight for the answer.

To cut patterns on leather canvases, place the patterns over your leather canvas as closely as possible. This will help you to save as much material as possible.

If you know anything about sewing pattern making, you know patterns often have cutting directions towards the fabric’s grainline. I explain how to find the fabric grainline and how to use it in this post.

But in a nutshell, it means you have to align the patterns either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally to the selvage of the fabric.

Leather patterns don’t need to have any particular direction, as you won’t be dealing with fabric grainlines.

So, to save as much material as you can and use it efficiently, you would place them close together in any direction.

What are good Leather patterns for a beginner to sew?

As a beginner in sewing with leather, start with simple patterns. Choosing ones that don’t require complex stitching or advanced techniques is ideal. Here are some good leather patterns for beginners that you will find in this list in the next section of this post:

  1. Basic Leather Pouch: A simple pouch or coin purse is a great beginner project. It typically involves sewing straight lines and basic assembly, making it a perfect introduction to working with leather.
  2. Keychain: Leather keychains are small and straightforward projects that allow beginners to practice cutting, stitching, and adding hardware like key rings.
  3. Cardholder or Wallet: A minimalist cardholder or wallet pattern is another excellent choice for beginners. Look for patterns with minimal seams and easy-to-follow instructions.
  4. Simple Tote Bag: A small tote bag pattern made with leather is a beginner-friendly project that introduces sewing larger pieces of leather together. Opt for designs with minimal pockets and detailing.
  5. Bookmarks: Leather bookmarks are quick and easy projects that require minimal materials and sewing. They’re perfect for practicing cutting and stitching straight lines.
  6. Bracelets or Cuffs: Leather bracelets or cuffs are great for practicing basic stitching techniques like sewing on snaps or adding closures. Look for patterns with adjustable closures for versatility.
  7. Eye Glass Case: Sewing a simple leather eyeglass or sunglasses case allows beginners to practice basic stitching and assembly while creating a functional accessory.
  8. Coasters: Leather coasters are simple yet practical projects that can be made with minimal sewing. They provide opportunities to practice cutting and stitching straight lines.

  1. How exciting and motivating. I have long wanted to make a little leather pouch for my phone, keys and glasses. I’m going to try one of these. Probably in fabric first but I sooo want a leather one.

    • That is what I like most about some of these patterns! You can totally make them on fabric too. I am going to do the key tray in thick felt. It seem fun.
