Do you know how to print PDF sewing patterns?? Almost every pattern you buy online comes in a PDF format so you can print them at home. But let me tell you that printing and assembling your Sewing Patterns shouldn’t be hard.
At least not here in My Golden Thimble. Printing our patterns is super easy and actually, very practical too. Why? Well, because when you finish assembling it. It would fold perfectly into the shape of a US letter page. So you can store them and organize them very easily in every place you keep your documents. Here is a great tutorial on how to organize your patterns, that you can check after finish with this one.
I print my sewing patterns in recycled paper that my father in law gives me when he is done with his “paperwork”. I recommend that you use as much as recycled paper as you can (if you have the possibility). And use tissue paper to trace the size I am going to use each time. Tissue paper is great for tracing patterns and after you use it. It folds really flat taking almost no space at all. Wich allows me to keep it in the same envelope as the original pattern.
Or if it is easier for you, you can just print the pattern and cut the size you need directly of the paper pattern. Whatever works best for you.
For this example, I am printing a Thimble-T pattern for women, using an HP Deskjet 2515 printer. The settings options in your own printer might be different. But try to find the options I indicate below.
How to Print PDF Sewing Patterns
Step 1: Open your document
The first thing you need to do is Open your document in Adobe Reader (if you don’t have it you can download it for free here).
Step 2: Find the Square Tester
Now scroll down to the document and find the first page of the sewing pattern. In this page, you can usually find the “Square Tester” a 2″x2″ square meant to check if the proportions of your sewing patterns are correct for printing.
Step 3: Select these Settings
Once you identify the page that contains the Square Tester. You are going to print only this one first. In the “Page to print” section, you are going to select the option “pages” and then insert the test page number. Then in “Page Sizing and Handling” you need to select “Actual Size” option. This is super important to the fidelity of your pattern don’t miss this step!. Then you are going to click on Properties.
Step 4: Go borderless
Click on “Advanced Options” and find where the Border settings are. In my printer the option is “Print without borders” and then I click on the “Print without borders” option again. Click Accept.
Step 5: Verify the Square
After you print this page measure your tester square with a ruler or metric tape. If it actually measures 2″x2″ you are ready to print the rest of the pattern pages. If the measurement is wrong, even if it’s as little as 1/8″ bigger or smaller; check again your printing settings!! It might not seem like a big deal but it is, trusts me in this one.
Step 6: Print all the pattern
Print the rest of the pages by inserting the number of the next page after the tester page to the last page of the pattern.
How to assemble your PDF Sewing Pattern
Step 7: Match the numbers
Find the numbers on the corners of the pages and match the same numbers together so you can form the gray circles like this. You’ll see that my printer for some reason still fails to print the right part of my page’s edges. If this happens to you too, just make sure to guide yourself by the form of the circle and put the pages right next to each other, placing the edges of the pages together. Do not overlap the pages.
Step 8: Tape it!
Tape the pages right next to each other making sure that every corner match with each other. Use the MAP page in your document to guidance.
And that’s it!!

Hello, I printed the Christmas stockings and I just wanted to say that this worked great! The test was exactly 2 inches. I did have to search my printer settings to figure out how to print all of the pages on the pattern piece. Turned out to be a setting called Poster. I didn’t change the border settings and it gave me a 1/8th inch boarder, no problem. Thank you for the excellent instructions and patterns!
Hi Peggy dear! Oh, I am so happy that you enjoyed this sewing pattern. I am imagining just how cute your stocking turned out. I am also super happy you didn’t had problems to print this pattern.
Happy, happy holidays!
Hi Dafhtne,
Could you please send me a download link for the princess style dress. Your post for this dress is a beautiful floral print on the black background. I would love to make this dress for a wedding my daughter will be officiating, but cannot find the download button.
Hi Bev, absolutely, on my end it shows that the email with the free pattern was already delivered to you. You have to click on the part that says CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD (you can download on letter or A4) and the download will start.
I resent you the email again, just in case you missed the first one.
XOXO
I have also been jumping through hoops.
Where on earth do I go to get the pattern?
Impossible to follow.
I just want the Bow Tie pattern for kids.

Dear Annette,
The instructions of the bow tie pattern for kids state that there are two versions the free pattern which you can get by joining the FB group “My Golden Thimble Sewing Club” or you can buy the full version at our pattern shop. The free version is only the butterfly bow for adults and kids and the paid version has the 8 variations of each pattern (for both adults and kids 8 each).
All of this information is in the post and tutorial of the bow tie pattern. But I am also writing it here for you and sending you an email with the same response.
I hope this helps.
Why can’t I download the Dahlia pattern
Hi bashieda. What message are you getting?
I’m still struggling to download this pattern… Please help 🙏
Hi Bashieda, I am looking for your order of the Dahlia Dress on our system but I don’t see any purchase with your email.
Did you made it with a different one? I answered you also on our official Facebook page so we can solve it more easily there. I am on this with you.
Hi ad thank you for all the lovely patterns you have made. I would love to join your sewing club but there are a few problems, at least as far as I’m concerned. It is too complicated. I first found you because you advertised free patterns. Thats a great way to find people to participate with your club and whatever else you are selling. However, the number of hoops one has to jump through, and then all of the other pages there are trick ads that say “click here to down load” that have nothing to do with the pattern, just some gimmick to get you to press a button so some other trickster can get your email address. So thank you for taking the time to provide your patterns, I think they are lovely and I would have liked to try to print and tape them together. But it is too hard to down load them. Maybe if you just put a link to the pattern in your commentary like “click HERE” if your want to down load the pattern”. That should make things a lot easier.
I like the photo of how the finished bag looks. But it’s very confusing. It says it had a zipper finish, yet it doesn’t tell me how long or what kind of zipper to buy. It says to get bag handle, but doesn’t say how long or the size to buy. There is no straightforward list of what’s needed and lengths. Plus, there are a bunch of printable pictures which is great, but it doesn’t say any order of sewing or instructions on where to start, etc. It gave me a pattern instructions download but then said I already downloaded it (which I didn’t) and said I reached my max downloads. So now I can’t download it. All in all, it’s a bit of a disappointment, which is unfortunate because it looks like it would be a cute bag to make. Feels like a waste of my money.
Hi Marie, I am sorry for all this inconvenience I am sending you the sewing instructions directly to your email right now, and I will sort the rest of your doubts as soon as possible to your email too.
Hello, I have a problem with printing on A4 paper – downloaded A4_size_Dahlia_Dress_Sewing_Pattern_My_Golden_Thimble and when printing – the test square is fine 2×2 “, but there are no margins and there are no lines at the edge – eg there is no line for XXL size on the test page. A4 papers placed right next to each other will put together a 1 “test square, but there is no line near the edge, which will be a problem for other pages. Any idea how to resolve? Printed with actual size and no borders. Thank you.
Hi there!! Would you mind sending me a picture of the problem to hello@mygoldenthimble.com??
sended to email.
Answered 🙂
waste of time. I am furious at how confusing and difficult this entire pattern was to work with. As I got more and frustrated, I then was no longer able to download the pdf. Very disapointed
Hi Cooney, I am sorry for the trouble you are having. May I know what went wrong?
As for the remaining downloads, every pattern has a number of permit downloads, which is for security reasons but I just edited yours to have 3 more. If you let me know what happened I would love to help you to download the doggy’s bandana pattern
Eu adorei, muito obrigada.
