So, as I told you in my other home decor posts, I’ve been slowly redecorating my home since hubby and I moved here.
I started with my black and white bathroom decor.
And even though I loved the result, that wasn’t the most important room to renovate for me.
Ever since we first started living together, especially in the beginning of it. The least of the concerns was the decor.
We were more worried about paying rent or making our dimes LOL.
So, we have been living in spaces that honestly weren’t that cool to live in.
But now that we have our own home and I have a little more means and time, and of course a space that I could call my own, the game was on!
I’ve always dreamed of having the perfect elegant master bedroom for me.
And yes, I am leaving hubby out of the decisions here, not like he is very interested in them.
Anyway.
I dreamed of this green royal feel-like space.
And a white bed!
Bright and white.
Of course, in the beginning, my bed had an ugly quilted duvet and an awful wallpaper design.
I felt so uncomfortable there!
And angry because who wants to feel uncomfortable in their own bedroom?
A place that’s supposed to make you relaxed and happy…
It was time to change things.
MAKING AN ACTUAL EASY DUVET COVER DIY
So I started by getting rid of that outdated wallpaper and painted one of the walls emerald green.
Then, I bought this beautiful white duvet on Amazon that I totally loved! And I felt that it had a very fair price.
But of course, it needed a cover. That’s never included.
And the pillows too…
Also, don’t forget the needed fitted sheet.
My bed is king-size. And for a moment there my crazy mind started planning on sewing all of the above from scratch.
And when I started doing the sewing math of how many yards would I need. Not to mention that I would have to join several cuts to fit the width of the bed…
I took a step back and said to myself:
“Myself, it has to be an easier way to make your own duvet cover and don’t die in the process.”
Also, can anyone explain to me why on earth the single duvet covers are so damn expensive? Adulthood, girl.
So, I made the math again as I was on my way to get the fabric and I thought:
Why on earth should I be getting so much fabric and making such complex sewing when I can just get two flat sheets and sew them together?!?
I mean seriously.
With less of the amount that I would have spent on material I got these two flat sheets ready to be sewn, plus two sets of fitted sheets and pillow covers to change as needed!!!
And all would match! Imagine buying matching patterns and colors.
So, if you are thinking of making your own duvet cover from scratch, stop, go to Amazon and instead get two sets of your favorite color sheets.
Then with the money that you saved on fabric, get more fabric for other things!
Oh yes… and also follow this tutorial.

HOW TO MAKE A DUVET COVER FROM SHEETS STEP BY STEP TUTORIAL
1. Buy 2 sets of sheets.
Go to Amazon and get your preferred 4 piece set of sheets and pillow covers.
Make sure it includes at least one flat sheet per set so you can use them to make your Duvet Cover DIY.
The one thing that will make your life even easier is to measure the length and width of your duvet to make sure the flat sheets have the same measurements.
Some flat sheets are larger than a duvet and you would have to trim it down to size in that case.
But we are talking about an easy duvet cover DIY here, so let’s go with the easy step.
2. Fold and press the top
Fold one of the tops of the hems of the sheets in half twice or three times and press the ends of it.
This will mark the place where we are going to sew its buttonholes.
It is just a way to make an even mark without measuring.
3. Make the buttonholes
Using the marks you pressed on step 2, sew the buttonholes using your buttonhole foot.
Make one for each mark and one on each end of the top.
Open them carefully with a seam ripper.
4. Pin the flat sheets together.
Whether you are using pins or sewing clips, match both sheets with the wrong sides facing together.
Make sure that the top part of the sheets is on the same end. You know, the one with the wider hem.
Try to lay them flat on the floor before pinning the edges, if you have space.
If you don`t, just use your bed.
5. Sew around the edges.
Now you’re going to sew around the sheet starting on the right edge at ⅛”.
Pass through the right edge, the bottom edge, and finally, the left edge.
This will leave the top edge open, which is the side we are going to use as the closure of our duvet.
6. Add the buttons.
Using a heat erasable pen, mark a point where the buttons should be.
The buttons should be on the wrong side of the top hem of the sheet.
Then, sew the buttons over each mark by hand or with a button foot.
7. Insert your Duvet into your newly made duvet cover from flat sheets.
Time for the real hard time!
I am telling you. Inserting the duvet into your duvet cover is the hardest thing I’ve ever made bed clothes-wise.
That is why I am not even telling you how to do it.
Instead, watch this tutorial on how to insert a duvet into a cover.
Because even though I managed to do it…
I messed it up so many times that I don’t even want the washing time to come, so I don’t have to do it again.
It was all worth it, though.
Now you have a matching set of sheets for your duvet for a lot less than a simple bought duvet cover would have cost you.
