What’s a Flower Dog Bandana, Anyways?

Inspired by your love for my hair flower scrunchie, I wanted to create something special for my pup, who’s always by my side. While I’ve made dog sewing patterns before, none felt cute enough for her personality.

So I set out to create something unique—and I did! But then came the big question: what in the world do I call this thing?

Is it an over-the-collar flower scrunchie? A flower collar? A flower bandana? Technically, it sits over the collar… but it doesn’t slide into the collar, which is what “over the collar” actually means (thanks Google). So that ruled out that label.

In the end, I’m calling it the Flower Dog Bandana (Scrunchie-style)—but honestly? I’m still not 100% sure if that name will stick.

Maybe you all can help me decide! Leave me a comment with what you’d call it, and we’ll see which name wins the internet. Either way, what this pattern is… is a flower-shaped, scrunchie-style dog neck accessory with soft elastic that wraps around your dog’s neck—no ties, no buckles, just comfy cuteness.

And the best part? You can make one for yourself too, using my original flower scrunchie hair accessory, and twin with your fur baby. I mean… come on!

Why You’ll Love This Dog Flower Scrunchie

Let’s be real—this Dog Flower Scrunchie PDF Pattern is more than just adorable… it’s also super comfy and dog-approved! Unlike traditional bandanas that need to be tied tightly or clipped with a buckle, this one simply slips over your pup’s neck with soft elastic.

No fuss, no squeezing!

It’s also totally size-inclusive! The pattern comes in five sizes, so whether you’ve got a tiny Chihuahua or a fluffy Golden Retriever, there’s a perfect fit for your pup. And yes, my big dog with the chonky neck fits hers like a queen.

This Flower Dog Bandana Sewing Pattern is ideal for dressing up your pup without making them uncomfortable. You can even get creative with seasonal fabrics—think florals for spring, buffalo check for fall, or metallics for the holidays.

Matching your dog to your outfit? Totally encouraged. And to make it even easier, the pattern is available as a printable PDF or in projector file format—so if you’re team “save paper,” I’ve got you covered.

Choose the Right Size Pattern and Elastic for Your Pup

Once you’ve printed your Dog Flower Scrunchie sewing pattern (yay!), it’s time to pick the perfect size for your furry fashionista.

Grab your measuring tape and gently wrap it around your dog’s neck—right where their collar usually sits.

You’ll want this to be a snug-but-not-tight measurement, just enough to sit comfortably without squeezing.

Now, when it comes to choosing a size, if your dog’s neck measurement falls between two sizes, always size up.

For example, if your pup’s neck measures 12 inches, go for the size that fits a 15-inch neck girth. We’ll adjust it later when we add the elastic, so you’re not locked into a super precise fit right now.

And speaking of elastic—when you cut it later, you’ll want it to match your dog’s actual neck size closely (again, not too tight!).

The elastic does all the magic of gently hugging their neck without needing ties or buckles. So don’t stress too much about picking the “perfect” size—elastic is very forgiving!

Now that’s done let’s do the actual sewing part.

Instructions

    1. Fold and Press Your Fabric

Let’s start by folding your fabric in half lengthwise, with the pretty sides facing each other. A quick press with your iron will make everything stay nice and flat!

2. Trace and Cut the Flower Shape

Place your pattern on the folded edge and trace it out. Pin or clip it in place so it doesn’t wiggle while you cut.

3. Sew Around the Flower

Time to sew! Start just before the first curve, and follow along the flower shape with a straight stitch. Don’t forget to backstitch!

4. Snip and Trim the Curves

Make little cuts at the corners and along the curve lines. If you have pinking shears—yay! If not, cut tiny triangles to help the petals lay flat.

5. Turn It Right Side Out

Use a loop turner (or your favorite makeshift tool) to gently turn your scrunchie right side out. It’s like flipping a flower inside out—so satisfying!

6. Fold and Press the Tab

Tuck one of the side tabs inward and press everything down again to shape your flower just right.

7. Sew the Elastic Casing

Measure 1/2" from the folded edge and sew across in a straight line. This is where our elastic will go!

8. Thread the Elastic Through

Grab your bodkin or safety pin and guide the elastic through the casing. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t twist inside.

9. Sew the Elastic Ends Together

Once your elastic is through, sew the ends together with a zigzag stitch to keep everything stretchy and snug.

10. Close the Scrunchie

Tuck the open tab into the folded one, line it up, and sew it closed with a final straight stitch. Give it a last press—and done!
