Project Summary

This project sure had an overdue on my “sewing to-do list.”

It’s been over four years since I made my Free Sewing Machine Cover tutorial. All this time, my serger was hanging in there with the cheap plastic cover that came when I first bought it.

That pour soul! That wasn’t fair, was it? Not when my Juki Serger has been sewing oh so perfectly every time I use it without any issues all these years.

So, enough was enough. This past week, I put my hands to work and created this gorgeous cover, which matches the pattern for my sewing machine cover, with its side pockets and everything!

I made this pattern to fit my Juki MO654DE machine, which is fairly smaller than other serger machines such as the Brother or Singer ones. But do not worry; I am going to leave you the final exact measurements of this cover below so you can see if it will fit your machine.

The final measurements are 11 ½” for the front width, 12 ½” for the sides width, and 12 ½” tall.

If it doesn’t, you can easily modify the width or height of the pattern to make it work for you!

I quilted my cover, but if you are not a fan of this technique, you can always skip this step. Just make sure to use a thicker fabric, such as an outdoor canvas fabric. This will ensure your cover has more body and holds an excellent shape.

Materials:

1. Assemble and Quilt your pieces.

Once you have downloaded and assembled your pattern, cut your pattern pieces in the quilting cotton fabric.

Then, cut larger pieces of each one with at least ½” more allowance on the edges of each piece on the batting and the lining fabrics.

Use a 2” ruler to mark diagonal seam lines across each piece. Turn the ruler 45° and mark again perpendicular to these lines.

To quilt the pieces, you will layer up the lining, the batting, and the cotton fabrics. Use a lot of pins to secure these pieces, and then quilt away those seam lines!

If you’re new to quilting, I’ve got a trick that might help. Try using repositionable spray glue to hold the three layers of fabric together before you start sewing. It really does make things a whole lot easier! Just spray the wrong side of the cotton and lining fabrics with it and position them along with the batting.

Once everything is quilted, cut the excess fabric on each piece using the original sewing pattern.

2. Form the pockets.

Take the pocket pieces and sew your bias tape on the top raw edges of each one of them.

You can use your bias binding presser foot or any of my three different techniques to sew bias binding tape to sewing projects.

Now, place each one of the pockets over the side pieces of the serger cover pattern.

Be careful here. Match the curves on the pieces. The curve is very soft, but it is there!

Make a basting stitch on each side of the pockets to hold these pieces in place.

3. Attach the cover’s body to the sides.

Align the raw edges of the side pieces with the main body piece with the help of some (or a lot) sewing clips.

For a smooth sewing process, use a lot of pins on the curves of the top edges.

Then sew these pieces at ½”.

Check that all the layers of the fabrics are sewn together, especially in the area of the pockets. Then, reduce the seam allowance in half. This means the final seam allowance will be ¼”.

4. Finish the raw edges.

You are almost there!

The only thing we need to do now is to finish all the raw seams with more bias tape!

These seams are harder to use the bias binding on because they get a little thicker. To avoid frustration, sew the bias tape by opening it first, sewing it from the wrong side first, and then topstitching on the right side of the fabric. Learn more about this technique on my sewing bias tape tutorial here.

And that’s it!!

Conclusion

As you can see, creating a cover for your serger with a free sewing pattern is practical, fun, and creative.
