Keep track of every measurement you need to make your patterns for yourself and all your friends and clients.
This free printable booklet includes a page to record measurements you need for pattern making. Also, you will find a handy diagram that shows you how to take said measures.
I have worked for commissions for a long while now.
And something I have always struggled with is how I record my client’s measurements.
I used to have a notebook, but I have a zillion of notebooks, so it always got lost.
Then I had this “post-it” method where I wrote down the measurements and then pinned them into the fabrics or clothes I was making.
It didn’t work. Enough said.
But now I have this cute Body Measurements Booklet on which I keep track of all my client’s measurements, and I can always add new pages by just hitting print.
How to keep a record of Body Measurements for Sewing?
To keep a good record of anybody’s measurements to make garments, you first need to know how to take the body measurements correctly.
Once you understand how to take the measurements you need for sewing, you can proceed.
Start by taking the horizontal measurements. This includes the chest, waist, hips, girth, arms, back, etc.
Then take the vertical measurements—neck to waist on the front and back, hip length, waist to floor, etc.
Make sure to write down these measurements on your Pattern Card to know what size it is after a while.
How often should I retake a person’s Measurements?
I like to retake all the clients’ measurements every year or so.
If you know your client has a variable body size for any reason, then try to take them every three months.
Also, consider the factors that might influence daily changes in size, such as water retention or if your client just ate.
My ideal scenario is to take their measurements after 1 hour or so after a typical dinner.
That way, I can use the measurements to allow room if they need the clothes for a wedding or a dinner event.
Of course, I always ask my clients if they prefer a loose fit or a close fit.

don’t see the link to download the “Free Body Measurements Chart for Sewing. Printable PDF Booklet.”
Hi Kristine,
You have to click on the three dots on the right of the name of the file and then click download 😀
Hope it helps.
?? What three dots?
On the files list once you find the file (PDF) you want to download there are three dots on the right (better to download in PC) and you click on those and then click download.
For example, in this case you can just click on the pdf file of this post: https://www.facebook.com/groups/482653578774083/permalink/1606736409699122 where I linked the file
Love this! Thank you so much. I tried doing something like this for my own measurements…..Not even going to show anyone the drawing I did of myself! After I printed yours, I immediately shredded my own drawing. You are so inspiring to me and I am certain to others.
Oh Bev, thank you so much for your kind words.
But I bet your drawings were good too! I still thank you so much for liking the chart I made for you guys.
Having a guide like this is so important I have used my own paperwork to do it and love the thought that this will make it easier.
I am so glad that you enjoyed our measurement chart. I am happy to make your life easier! 😀
