Today I want to show you my latest embroidery project: a birth announcement baby blanket.
Remember that friend whom I made the baby girl’s free clothes sewing patterns for her baby shower??
Well, her baby was born!!
She literally told us about it around 5 hours after birth! Lol. Talking about good energy and spirit.

The real question: Can women really be standing, laughing and crossing legs. Also talking as if you only had a bubu and not just take out a whole human out you, one day after birth??
Yes, I know I am far for being an expert on motherhood. But this felt like a false advertisement on birth.
FYI this comment is just part joke, part “omg-I-am-so-amazed-how-easy-you-made-this-look”.
Ok. Back to the baby blanket.
Embroidery Birth Announcement Blanket.
Choosing to embroider the blanket.
I and another couple of friends were invited to visit her the next day, so I knew I had to come up with a welcome gift for her beautiful baby girl ASAP.
A baby blanket sounded like the logical gift to made in less than an hour and a half. The thing was that I had so little time for doing this that I was only able to make a simple square with hemmed edges and a decorative ribbon.
Not enough. Simply not enough…
Thankfully I remembered these super cute blankets on which people embroider the baby’s birth information such as date, weight and such.
If you follow me on Instagram you know I recently bought an embroidery sewing machine that I am still learning to use.
I was a little bit afraid to ruin the blanket because I didn’t have enough extra material or time to test the design. And this was only my 3rd embroidery project.
Nevertheless, I went for it.
After all, I used the letter designs that were already in the machine and edited directly from there.
So there was not really much room for errors.
Getting Baby’s info without looking suspicious. A failed attempt.
First, I had to gather the baby’s information without looking too obvious.
Obviously, I failed at being discreet at this, according to my friends. My questions about the pumpkin in our chat group were kind of transparent. Oh well…
The intention is that counts, I guess?
Any way!
In the end, I can say that the result was very pleasant and that my friend really loved it!
This goes to show that sometimes you just have to trust yourself and in your creativity and the rest will take care of itself.
Embroidery Birth Announcement Sewing Process:
How I made this blanket in less than an hour?
The first thing I did was cut a rectangle of about 110 cm by 70 cm. Then I used a rolled hem foot to make a small hem on all the edges of the rectangle.
After that, I choose a beautiful pink ribbon I got in this bundle to sew on top of the hem, making sure the ribbon spikes went out a little far from the edge. This gave the illusion of the hem being wavy.
For the embroidery information, I choose the 4 colors of my brother Embroidex embroidery thread that was on the print of the fabric: the first one was pink, second one green, the third blue, and orange last.
I baste stitched a perfect square on one corner of the blanket so I knew where the information was going to be.
Finally, I used the floating method to embroider the information about Ana.
As you can see I used different fonts for the name and the info, as well as different sizes. I wanted all the information to pop, but also for the name to be the most eye-catching feature.
Before I gave this gift to my friend I rolled the blanket into a tub and wrapped a nice satin ribbon with a bow. This was the perfect final touch.

This is wonderful! My machine only does small letters- Janome memory craft, 20yrs old. I can’t hand embroider. Any tips? Or I can just leave out those details. I’ve got a little time, so can maybe buy some stitch on letters?🤔
Have you ever tried an open toe foot? You could try Free Motion Embroidery to write the letters.

What kind of material did you use and what other types of fabrics would you recommend.
100% cotton always! That’s the only material that I would use for baby items. This is quilting cotton and if you want you can line it with bamboo or linen.
