About This Project
I’m always on the hunt for cute Halloween décor, and if you’ve been following me for a while, you already know I have a serious ghost obsession.
Every year, I can’t resist adding more DIY ghost–themed decorations to my growing collection of Halloween sewing projects.

This year, when I spotted a set of ghost towels online, I almost bought them—but the shape felt a little plain. Since I’ve got a sketchbook full of ghost doodles and ideas, I figured, why not design my own?
So here we are with these DIY ghost hand towels that are sweet, a little quirky, and topped off with rosy blush cheeks.

For the base you can totally recycle old towels or even upcycle a worn-out T-shirt if you like. I bought four new hand towels so they’d match my bathroom, but use what you have on hand.
When it comes to the appliqué, felt fabric is definitely the way to go. Felt is easy to sew, won’t fray, and makes adding those eyes, mouth, and cheeks a breeze.

I did experiment with a bit of canvas for the little bow on my ghost girl so it would match the blush cheeks, but wow—canvas can be stubborn and loves to unravel.

Lesson learned: stick with felt fabric for the details, and you’ll be set. In the tutorial below, I’ll walk you through every step so your own DIY ghost hand towels come out perfectly adorable and ready for Halloween.
DIY Ghost Hand Towels- Sewing Tutorial

Materials
Before we start stitching these DIY ghost hand towels, let’s gather everything you’ll need. I like to set up all my supplies first so I can enjoy the fun sewing part without running around looking for tools.
- Hand towels – I used four hand towels, each one larger than 8″ x 12″. You can absolutely recycle an old towel if you’d like a budget-friendly option.
- Black felt fabric – For the eyes and mouth of each ghost.
- Pink felt fabric – Perfect for those rosy blush cheeks and the little ghostly details.
- Black satin ribbon – To tie a cute bow or to hang the towels if you’d like.
- Glue stick – Handy for lightly holding felt pieces in place before stitching.
- Pins – To keep everything steady while you sew.
- Sewing machine – Any basic machine will work for this Halloween sewing project.
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat – For quick, neat fabric cuts (scissors work too if that’s what you have).
- Matching thread – I used white, black, and pink so each appliqué blends beautifully.
With these materials ready, you’re all set to start this simple Halloween sewing pattern. Next, we’ll jump into cutting and prepping the felt appliqué pieces for your adorable ghosts.
Step 1: Cut Your Pattern Pieces
First things first—download the free pattern (you can grab it by subscribing in the form at the end of this post) and print it out.
Once you’ve assembled the pattern pages, cut two pieces of the ghost body for every towel you plan to make—one front and one back.

If you’re working with a plain towel or scrap fabric, just place the pattern directly on top and cut carefully along the edges.

Next, cut the eyes and mouth from black felt fabric, and the blush cheeks from pink felt fabric. These little pieces are what give your DIY ghost hand towels their quirky personality.
Step 2: Position The Applique Pieces
Now it’s time to position the appliqué pieces.
Lay the front ghost body piece flat, place the printed paper pattern on top, and cut small guide holes for the eyes, cheeks, and mouth.

This trick helps you pin everything exactly where it belongs.
Dab a tiny bit of glue stick on the back of each felt piece to hold it in place, then add a few pins for extra security.

By the time you finish pinning, the appliqué pieces should stay in place and be ready for the next step.
Step 3: Sew the Appliqué Pieces
Now it’s time to secure those adorable felt details to your towel. Set your sewing machine to a narrow zigzag stitch—this gives the appliqué a neat, slightly raised edge and keeps the felt from lifting over time.
If you’re not totally confident with appliqué yet, here’s a little tip: first outline each oval (the eyes, mouth, and blush cheeks) with a straight stitch. This quick step holds everything in place and makes the final zigzag easier to control.

Start on one of the longer sides of each oval, and as you sew, gently pivot the fabric so the stitch hugs every curve.
Go slow around those tight corners and keep the edges lined up. Use matching thread—black for the eyes and mouth, pink for the cheeks—so the stitches blend in and let the appliqué pieces steal the spotlight.
Step 4: Add the Hanging Ribbon
Cut a piece of black satin ribbon about ½ inch wide and 6 inches long. Fold the ribbon in half lengthwise to create a loop. Pin this loop to the very center of the ghost’s head, right between the two eyes.

This ribbon will serve as a handy hanging loop for your DIY ghost hand towels, so make sure it’s pinned securely and the ends line up evenly before we stitch it in place in the next step.
Step 5: Sew the Ghost Body
Place the back piece of the ghost body over the front piece with the right sides together, carefully matching all edges and curves. Pin well so the layers stay put.
Using a ¼-inch seam allowance, sew all around the ghost shape, taking your time to follow those curves and catch both towel layers at every point. This is important—if you miss a spot, the towel can unravel later.

Leave a 3-inch opening along one side of the body. This little gap will let you turn the ghost right side out. Once you’ve flipped it, press it lightly if needed, and then close that opening with a neat invisible stitch (ladder stitch).

With the body finished, you’re ready for the final touch—making the bow for the ghost girl!
Step 6: Make and Attach the Bow
For the ghost girl’s bow, cut a rectangle of pink fabric measuring 8 inches long by 5.5 inches wide. Fold it in half as shown in the illustration, then sew the two sides and the bottom with a ¼-inch seam allowance, leaving about a 1-inch opening so you can turn it right side out.

Flip the piece right side out and press it flat. With a hand needle and thread, run a basting stitch across the center of the rectangle. Gently pull the thread to gather the fabric into a bow shape. Wrap the thread around the center a few times and knot it securely.
Next, create the bow’s center band: cut a small rectangle about 1.5 inches by 2.5 inches.

Fold the long edges toward the middle lengthwise so they meet in the center, then press.
Wrap this strip around the gathered center of your bow and stitch the ends together at the back to hold it in place.

Finally, position the finished bow on the head of one ghost and hand-sew it with a few small hidden stitches near the back so they won’t show from the front.
