Today, I’m thrilled to guide you through an exciting Crumb Quilt Heart T-shirt Upcycle tutorial.

This creative tutorial not only celebrates creativity but also will give you another great idea of what to do with those beloved fabric scraps.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we’re going to spice things up by creating a heart applique using the crumb quilting technique.

So, grab your scissors, and let’s dive into this colorful adventure!

Heart T-shirt Upcycle

I’ve always had a soft spot for using fabric scraps.

They’re like tiny bursts of inspiration waiting to be transformed into something beautiful.

The idea of throwing them away feels like letting go of a piece of creative potential.

So, armed with my dedication to recycling, I decided to turn these remnants into a wearable masterpiece.

Crumb quilting became my go-to technique for this project. It’s a fantastic way to repurpose those seemingly random fabric bits into a cohesive canvas.

The process is like putting together a puzzle, arranging, and stitching until you create a vibrant and eclectic backdrop of colors.

And let me tell you, it’s not just recycling; it’s like therapy!

I decided to use many, many colors because I wanted a truly unique and fun T-shirt.

The result was a heart that boasted a kaleidoscope of colors, each fabric scrap telling a unique story. It was a testament to the beauty that can emerge from the seemingly chaotic world of fabric remnants.

Beyond Upcycling: A Sustainable Fashion Statement

Using fabric scraps for upcycling isn’t just about being eco-friendly; it’s a gratifying experience.

It’s about taking materials that might otherwise end up in the landfill and transforming them into something new, something uniquely yours.

It’s a sustainable fashion statement that speaks volumes about creativity and conscious living.

This Heart T-Shirt Upcycle is more than just a craft – it’s a way to unleash your inner fashion designer. Each piece becomes a canvas, and you’re the artist, free to experiment and create something that truly reflects your style.

And this is exactly what we will be doing with this tutorial. So, get ready to add a unique and personalized touch to your clothing.

Making a Canvas With the Crumb Quilting Technique

Ever since I learned the crumb quilting technique, I have been doing so many projects.

This time, I felt the excitement build as I thought about shaping it into a heart – the ultimate symbol of love.

In this tutorial, I won’t go deep into how to make this canvas, but if you don’t know it yet, then go ahead and read my Crumb Quilting Technique Step-by-Step Tutorial, in which I will tell you how to go about it in dept.

In summary, what you want to do is grab a bunch of fabric scraps.

I decided to use mix-and-match colors because I wanted to create something fun for my Valentine’s outfit this year.

But I have also made crumb quilts with only one shade of color (let’s say pink scraps only), and it also looks fantastic. So choose whichever you want!

You have to start joining the scraps from the straight sides until you form a big enough canvas out of them.

Cutting Out the Heart T-Shirt Upcycle Applique

Once you have a big enough canvas, it’s time to create the heart applique out of that.

To do that, you can make a heart template using a sheet of paper. Fold it in half and draw your heart.

My heart is measuring 8” wide by 7” tall. I tried to make it as puffy as I could because that’s the shape I like for hearts.

Use that template to cut your heart into the canvas using a rotary cutter or fabric scissors.

Tip! Press some fusible interfacing on the back of the canvas (before cutting) to make your applique more sturdy for sewing.

Attaching the Heart to Your Tee

Now, onto the heart of the matter – attaching this fabric masterpiece to my T-shirt.

If you know anything about fabric appliques, you know there are a lot of options you can go about this.

I opted for a very narrow zig-zag stitch.

Why? Because it adds a touch of playfulness and a handmade charm to the applique. It’s like infusing my tee with a little extra love, stitched directly into the fabric.

Make sure to center your heart with the exact center of your t-shirt and use a lot of pins to keep it in place.

As for my zig-zag stitch, I used a width of 3 mm and a length of 0.6 mm.

The zig-zag stitch not only enhances the visual appeal but also ensures the applique stays securely in place.

Whether you’re hitting the dance floor or just going about your day, this stitched-on heart is here to stay.

  1. Great tutorial! I have done this with pieces from a FQ pack of batiks that I received as a gift. Could not bear to toss even the smallest of scrap. I just made a rectangle sorta shape and stitched onto a tee.
Just a suggestion: place some paper tissue, paper towel, or stabilizer (if you embroider) on reverse of tee-shirt. This lets you create a very professional looking applique.
I get so many compliments on my patchy tees without an embroidery machine, just using zig-zag stitch

    • Thank you so much for the suggestion! I did added it on the tutorial eventhough clearly I didn’t do it! LOL
Next time I try this tutorial I will put stabilizer for sure!
