Bow Tie Pattern Tips and Tricks.

To get the perfect bow tie, I will give you a couple of important notes you should follow.

First of all, make sure you take the neck size measurement correctly. To measure the neck, pass the measuring tape around it and tilt’ it a bit toward the lower center of your body. Insert one finger between the tape and the neck to make sure you won’t get a super tight measure out of this.

Another crucial thing is to cut the pattern in the right direction. To do this, you must know everything about the fabric grainline. In this case, we will need to cut fabric on the bias. This will ensure that our bow tie will have enough stretch to adapt to the base of the neck comfortably.

Finally, remember to use interfacing on each layer of your bow tie. I have seen some tutorials where they put the interfacing only on the bow part of the tie, which I honestly think is not that crazy. I prefer to add it to all the pattern pieces, though. The ideal interfacing weight for this project is a lightweight one.

How much fabric do you need to make a bow tie?

You will need at least 3/4 of a yard of fabric to make an adult bow tie. You need about half a yard of fabric for a Kid’s bow tie.

The piece is small. But it will consume more fabric as this project needs to be cut on the bias.

To start, you will need to gather the following materials:

Once you have all your materials, you can proceed with the following instructions.

2. Cut the Bow Tie Pattern Pieces.

For each bow tie, you will need 4 layers of fabric and 4 layers of fusible interfacing.

Use your iron in a low heat setting and press the fusible interfacing on the wrong side of the fabric on each one of the four layers.

3. Join the short ends.

Grab a bow tie piece layer and place it over a second one with the right sides of the fabrics facing together.

Sew the shorter ends at 1/4”.

Then, press the seam allowance open.

4. Sew around.

Once you have two tie pieces together. Place the two layers with the right sides of the fabrics facing together.

Sew around the bow tie at 1/4” and leave a space open on the narrow section so you can turn the piece inside out.

Cut the corners, if any, and make clippings on all the curves of the pieces.

Use a loop turner to turn the whole piece inside out.

Press flat. I like to use a pin or a pointer to pull the corners out when I turn my pieces. This way, the corners get super sharp when I press the projects.

5. Close the open space.

Use an invisible stitch to close the open space from where you turned the piece to the right side.

Press again.

6. Try on your tie.

Now is the time for the fun part. Tie your tie around your neck, and check out how good it looks!

If you don’t know how to do this, don’t worry. Here is a tie tutorial that shows you how easy it is to make the bow of your cute bow ties.

You will take no time to learn how to do this, as it is as easy as tying your shoelaces.

That’s it!! Now you have a perfect tie to wear at any event or simply as the most brilliant accessory for your style.
