I remember the first time I made a bra. It was a PDF sewing pattern back in college, and in complete honesty, that first try was a disaster.

When it comes to bra patterns, you will not find many options out there. Bra-making is hard. You have to think not only about normal sewing measurements but also about cup sizes.

Then, you must find the match between the cup and the underbust measurement. And if you know anything about bra sizes, you know that the size range is vast.

That’s why today I want to celebrate all bra shop patterns and bra-making people with a list of the best bra sewing patterns on the internet!

How hard is it to sew bras?

A company’s quality and effort in its bra-making instructions are essential to an easy bra-making process. If the pattern has poor instructions, any beginner will feel discouraged and probably won’t finish their projects.

To do all of this, you also need to consider the bra-making essential tools and notions you might not have worked with before. For example, flat underwires, hooks, rings, sliders, underarm elastic, and more.

On the other hand, choosing the best style can also play an important role in how easy or difficult it is to sew. There are many complex steps involved in padded bras, but if you choose a simple bralette, the sewing process will be easier.

From that, you need to know how to measure your size correctly so you can choose the right pattern.

How do you measure a bra cup for sewing?

There are four simple methods to measure yourself to determine your bra size.

The first way to measure for a bra is to take a measurement under the bust. Right in the rib cage. To that measure, you need to add 6,” and that will be your size.

Then you measure your chest circumference and subtract the under-bra measurement for that size. That should give you the cup size.

But before you start cutting your patterns, know that this is the method that retailers use in stores. So it might not yield the perfect size range for your pattern.

According to the article, the second method is the most reliable one. Measure the high bust girth (over the bust and under the arms), and that will be your band size.

Then, to figure out the cup size, measure the full bust (chest circumference) and subtract the high bust girth from it. Then match the number you got with the cup size: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, and so on.

In this second example, my high bust measurement is 36″ (this is the bra band), and my full bust is 38″. In 38-36=2. In this example, my bra size is 36B.

You can read the article above to learn more about bra measuring.

  1. I have sensory issues currently and can’t stand any of my bras. I need something simple, support for large cup size, easy on/off. I was hoping THE BRA TOP PATTERN, SEXY COMFORT FOR ANY SEASON would work but it says not for larger than D cup. bummed. there are others wanting that info too based on comments on sew easy website

    • Hi Andrea, thank you so much for sharing this with us. It’s true most patterns are made for smaller cup sizes. Unfortunately I am no expert on lingerie pattern drafting to help out, but I am going to put that on my list to soon be able to make inclusive sizes. In the mid time I will keep a look out for patterns with larger sizes and will add them here when I do find them.

  2. Yes…front close bras please…I’m in the middle of taking an old one apart to try to copy just because it is front close. I also bought 2 of the “Daisy” bras..very super disappointed with them. So, I’m going to try to fix them to my liking.

  3. I would like to see a bra that ties on the front. As we grow older hands don’t find their way on the back easy. Please consider it. Thank you

  5. Thank you for these patterns, I will attempt to develop a bra that will work for me. I had a mastectomy almost two years ago and have been unable to find any kind of bra (besides a sport bra) that works. I have just closed the right cup off. But it’s not very attractive. I am 69 years old and have always hated wearing a bra but my surviving boob defiantly needs some support.
Any ideas or other patterns are welcome.
    Thank you.

    • Dear rose, first of all. Bowing before the strong and brave journey, you must have taken.
Secondly, what cup size are you? If is not an extra size, you might try on some bralettes with elastic under the bust. Remove the darts or cuts from the right cup to keep the design. I think it could look beautiful. I have one bralette I made with two layers of lace mesh and its quite supportive.
I will check out patterns for mastectomies though, so I can give you a better recommendation.
