Instead of getting a store-bought, this year I am making my own Custom Size Tree Skirt Pattern.
And I want to show you how easy it is to make one by yourself.
You don’t need to know anything about pattern making or have crazy sewing skills to pull this off.
Only a little bit of fabric, a measuring tape, and maybe an afternoon or less of your time.

From all the Christmas Decorations that a tree can have, the tree skirt is one of the most important elements.
I believe it to be the most important focus point of it along with the Christmas star.
It is not only to cover the plastic (or natural, as you preferred) base of the trees. There is actually a compliment to your theme and Christmas’s color palette.
And if you always wanted to make your own, then you are in luck because in this post I am going to tell you step by step how to do so.
It is so easy that you might want to get another tree just to make more of these.
I should know. I just got my very first master bedroom Christmas tree and decorations.
And of course, I am making a Custom Size Tree Skirt Pattern for it.
How much fabric do I need for a Tree Skirt?
The amount of fabric needed to make a custom size tree skirt will be twice the length of the skirt, and twice the width plus 4” or 5”.
For example, if I want my tree skirt to be 22” long from the steam of the tree out, then I need at least 1.3 yards, from a fabric that has at least the same measure in width.
How do you make a tree skirt pattern?
Choose a Christmas Tree Skirt Pattern and adapt it to your tree size. To make a tree skirt pattern we need the measurement taken from the log of the tree base out to our desired length. This is usually 2” or 3” more from where the tree branches finish.
After that, you need to fold your fabric and cut a donut shape in which the center hole will have a 4” diameter.
The diameter of the whole skirt will depend on the first measurement you took.
Making a Custom Size Tree Skirt Pattern on the fabric.
1. Take the measurements.
Use a measuring tape to measure the length from the “log” of the tree to the end of the base of the branches.
Add about 2″ to 3″ plus the seam allowance.
I usually leave ½” for the seam allowance.
2. Fold the Fabric.

You are going to cut a perfect square of fabric that measures 2 times the length of your tree skirt plus 4″.
Remember to add 1″ or 2″ more, just in case.
Fold the square of fabric twice.
3. Draw your pattern

Starting from the folded closed corner measure 2” down from one edge to the other, forming ¼” of a circle.
Next, measure the length of the skirt from that line down forming the second quarter of a circle.
But wait! You don’t necessarily have to draw a perfect circle on the outer edge.
You can play with your lines and make odd shapes to see what may result. Just take into account the measurement of the end length.
Here are some shapes you can try.

4. Cut the Skirt Pattern.

With the fabric folded as it was, cut following the two lines you drew.
Unfold the fabric and you will end up with a perfect circle with a hole in the middle. Much like a donut.
To make an opening cut a straight line from the outer edge to the inner one.
5. Make the hem.

If you are using fabric that doesn’t fray such as felt or a type of knit fabric, you can skip this step.
Working with lightweight fabrics like organza? No problem you can easily make a quick curved hem using a rolled hem foot.
But, if you are not in the mood to sew at all, there is always the magic hem tape solution.
I have used it in several of my Christmas DIY projects and decorations and they are still standing.
6. Decorate your tree skirt.

And that’s it! The only thing left is to decor your tree skirt any way you want.
You can have fun with your kids by painting your tree skirt together.
Or, you can add no-sew fabric snowflakes. Make them with iron-on vinyl out of SVG snowflakes files…
Anything you want really.
I have a No-Sew Tree Skirt that I made with felt and decored with trimmings and DIY yarn pompoms.
