Are you looking to add a touch of absolute charm to your home decor?

This super cute pillow is just what you need.

I made this design last week, inspired by some gorgeous succulent pillows I saw on Amazon. Even though they were super cute and very original, those types of pillows didn’t match the “princess-like” theme I am trying to achieve in my bedroom.

No, I needed something classy and cute. And honestly, what is classier than roses?

To make the petals of this rose to hold this awesome shape and volume, I used a layer of heavy-weight tulle between the fabrics.

You see, I needed this rose to have a pretty volume, so it looks like a real rose. So make sure to use this hack to hold the shape of your Rose pillow, too!

Now, as always, the pattern I am providing here for free is only one size. It is approximately 17″ by 17″ when finished. This was the perfect size for the reading chair in my bedroom.

But I want to make this pattern in larger sizes, particularly one extra large one for the corner of the couch in my living room. If you would be interested in that, please let me know in the comments of this post.

That way, I will put myself to work and make the files with downloadable instructions, too!

In the meantime, get yourself this free pattern, and let’s sew ourselves a new Rose Throw Pillow!

Materials:

For this project, you will need the following:

1. Cut your fabrics.

To get the free pattern for this tutorial, please sign up using the form at the end of this page and we will send it to you right away. Then, cut your fabrics as indicated in the pattern instructions. Remember to add ¼” of seam allowance to the main fabric before cutting your pattern.

Then, cut one piece of tulle in the pattern without seam allowance on the tulle for each pair of petal layers.

After that, follow these steps to put your pillow together.

2. Sew the petals.

Place the petal layers with the right sides together, and then place the layer of tulle (the tulle is represented by the pink shape here) right in the center.

Pin everything together and then sew around the tulle petal shape, making sure you grab around ⅛” of the tulle edge.

Make cuts around the whole petal seam allowance, then turn the piece to the right side.

Repeat this step with all the petals.

3. Gather the petals together.

Separate the petals by petal size. You will have six large, four medium, three small, and one small, and the one that will go in the center.

Take the large petals and place them in a circle, leaving around 3” of space in the middle.

After that, use a hand needle to make a basting stitch around the base of the petals. Then, pull the thread and gather them until they look something like this.

You will do the same thing with the medium petals, except this time, you want to gather the base of the petals and then wrap the thread around them from the back side so they form a pike-like shape.

We are doing this so our rose can have some 3D volume.

Do the same thing with the small petals.

4. Secure the petals to the pillow.

Perfect! It is taking shape, isn’t it???

Now is the time to secure the petals’ layers over the pillow base, which is one of the fabric’s circle layers.

Use hand stitches to secure the petals from the center first.

Remember to do this on the right side of the base pillow fabric.

When you are on the very last petal, which is the center one, you are going to roll it into itself and then stick it in the center of all the layers of the petals. Secure it with hand stitches, too.

Very good, my friend. We have done the most difficult part. Let’s finish our pillow.

5. Sew the pillow base.

Place the other layer of the pillow’s circular base over the part with the rose on it. Make sure the right sides of the fabrics are facing each other.

Align the edges of the circles and pin them.

Then sew at ¼”, leaving about 4-5” open.

6. Insert the filling.

Turn your pillow to the right side of the open space.

Then, use as much craft filling as you want to fill your pillow.

After that, use an invisible stitch to close the opened space.

Once you have your pillow ready, the last thing to do is make some hand stitches around the petals to secure them in place.

What I did was secure the larger petals to the base of the pillow. Then, I secured the medium petals to the large petals, and so on and so on.

Just remember to make these stay stitches from the back of each petal, grabbing only the back layer; that way, your stitches won’t be visible from the front of the pillow.

And that’s it! You have just created your own DIY rose pillow. The best part is that you can make as many throw pillows as you want, so you can customize the look of your space to your heart’s content.

Whether you want to display them on your couch, bed, or your favorite reading chair, these pillows will definitely add a cozy and charming touch to any room.

  2. I love all your patterns. This one is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I do have a question the is the mesh placed inside of the petals to give them shape? Is the mesh soft? I tried the link and it shows mesh that stretches. I’ve never used it so I’m a bit confused lol

    • Hi Iris, is heavy weigth mesh to give it structure. But honestly you are just fine skipping it and using fusible interfacing instead 😉 😉 I have also done it with fusible interfacing with the same results.
      Sending hugs!!

  5. Any tips for sewing the bottom part together without accidentally sewing the petals in? The petals hang over the edge of my fabric, I am hoping you have a magic trick to keep them inside the lines while trying to sew the rest of the pillow together.

    • Hi Elisa,
Absolutely! What I did was put all the petals togeter at the center (folding hem to the center) and pin them there. Not that magical, but that will keep them away from the edges so you don’t accidentally grab them when you are sewing the outside edge of the pillow body.
After that you can now proceed to make the secure stitches to fix the petals in their place.

I will love to see your result! Make sure to tag me when you are done with this project :D.

      Love, D

  7. I would definitely love a pattern for an even larger rose pillow. I think that several pillows in different sizes would look great stacked on the top of the bed.
