If there is a MUST-HAVE bikini top pattern you should own, it is the Aster Bikini Top.
This pattern is exactly what you need if you hate repeating outfits and don’t want to spend hundreds on new garments.
As far as I have counted, this one piece alone can make up to 12 different versions. So it’s like having 12 outfits for each pool party!

Now, the great thing about this swimsuit pattern is that it is super beginner-friendly.
You don’t have to have previous experience in swimwear. However, if you have never sewn knit fabrics before, I recommend that you first read our How to Sew Stretch Fabrics 101 Guide before jumping into the sewing tutorial.
After you read that, let’s proceed with our free sewing pattern.
About this pattern.

The sewing pattern we are going to sew today is the free version of the Aster Top Bikini Pattern.
As with some of my free sewing patterns, I am sharing my own size of the pattern for free. This pattern is small and should fit a chest girth of 40″-42″ (which is a medium).
BUT! If you want a wider size range and an upgrade to this pattern, you can always get our Full Aster Pattern Version.

The difference between the free and paid versions is that for just a few bucks, you can get the Aster Bikini Top Sewing Pattern in all sizes, ranging from 30″ to 58″ chest girth, in all printing formats (Letter, A4, A0, and Projector files), and an ad-free experience with its own digital PDF instructions and support sewing tutorials.
I love that I can give you this option for wider sizes on patterns! Choose whichever option suits you the best, and follow the instructions to print and assemble your pattern.
As for the fabrics, I am using swimwear nylon spandex with at least 75% 4-way stretch. Consider putting cups on this top. I will link those on the material list below.

Materials.
- Aster Bikini Top Sewing Pattern (or download free version at the end)
- 1 yard of 75% to 100% 4-Stretch Nylon Spandex
- Swimwear Cups (optional)
- ¼” Braided Elastic
- Matching Thread
- Serger Machine
- Sewing Machine
- Loop Turner
- Rotary Cutter
- Cutting Mat
1. Cut your fabrics
Ok, so let’s learn how to make a bikini top. Shall we?
Once you have downloaded and assembled your sewing pattern, follow the cutting directions to cut your fabrics with the correct grainline of the fabric.
You will end up with two pairs of mirrored pieces (four pattern pieces total), which means you have to cut the pattern mirrored two times.
2. Sew the channel opening

The first thing we have to do is make a snip cut on the base of the bikini top that is ¼” deep by ½” tall. Please follow the notch on the paper pattern so you don’t make a mistake.

Then, fold that piece towards the wrong side of the fabric and make a straight or stretch stitch to secure it.
3. Sew around the pattern piece.
Place the two mirrored pieces of the pattern with the right side of the fabrics facing together and pin them around to secure them in place.
Cut four pieces of elastic 12” long and pin them from the end of the folded notch of the channel up. Follow the edge of the fabric.

Now, you will sew all around the top body with your serger machine, leaving a space of about 3” open at the top of the strap. That way, we can turn our piece on the right side out later.

As a note, you want to make sure the serger stitch covers your elastic completely so you don’t have problems turning your piece to the right side. Do not stretch the elastic while sewing it.

If you don’t feel that confident sewing the elastic on the edge of your seams, you can opt not to include any. I strongly recommend you do, though, because putting elastic on the side seams will provide us with more support and structure.
But then again, the bikini will work, too, without it. Your choice!
Once you are done, use the open space to turn your pieces to the right side.
4. Form the channel
Use a pressing cloth and some steam to press the seams of your bikini tops.

Then, form the channel for our spaghetti straps by sewing at ½” from the bottom edge.
You can make this seam using a straight stitch or a stretch stitch (the one that looks like a lightning bolt).
5. Make the straps

Finally, we need to make our spaghetti strap. To do that, we will need a strip of fabric cut crosswise or on the bias that measures 65” by 1 ¼”.
Fold the strip in half lengthwise and serge along the length. Then, use a loop turner to turn your strap to the right side.

To finish this strap, you have two options.
The first is to make a very tight knot on each end. The other cleaner option is to push the raw edges of the ends inside the strap and then close the open space with an invisible stitch by hand.

Finally, use the loop turner to insert the strap through the channels of the base.

6. Finishings
This step is optional but will give your stunning bikini design a more professional look.
The only thing you have to do is to make a couple of hand stitches on the seam joints of the opening channels so the serged seam doesn’t stick out.

Happy Sewing!

Just wanted to say how amazing this pattern is, and how perfectly it came out. I used only the zigzag stitch and no elastic bands as I do not have surger sewing machine. And I’m not very advanced in sewing, I was worried my seams will not be perfectly straight. But the material and pattern is so forgiving and it looks just as I expected. I will never go back to buying swimsuits, and need this in every color.
I am so so happy that it turned out that great for you! It is a very nice pattern for beginners for sure! I love that you are making it in other colors. I have been thinking on making one with one color on one side and a different one on the other.
Kisses!!
Making it two sided is such a good idea! <3
