I have never knitted, yet I have a considerably big stash of yarn in my sewing room.
Somehow I have found many crafts made with yarn that I have loved through time. So, whenever I see a nice yarn color at the craft shop, I put it in my cart.
This time I wanted to imitate the craft of string art and the yarn hearts to make individual pieces of hearts that could serve as my Valentine’s decorations.
It takes a good bit of an afternoon to make (mainly because of the drying time). You could put your favorite sewing Netflix show and make many of them.
I absolutely loved this version of the project!!
And even though I initially intended for these to be heart coasters (I know… not the best idea), I like how they ended up.
Alternative ideas for a DIY String Heart.
This project was inspired by string art. It is typically done with a piece of wood and nails.
That creates a framed decoration you can hang on walls.
If you are looking for an even quicker day of crafts, this can also be an option for you. Just replace the pins with nails and get yourself a hammer.
DIY String Heart with Yarn.
1. Gather your materials.
To start with this fantastic DIY project, you will need to gather some craft materials you probably already have at home.
- Paper
- Yarn (pink)
- White glue
- Water
- A small container
- Craft scissors
- Glitter (optional)
- Thick cardboard
- This type of Pins or nails
2. Make your pattern.
Use a piece of paper of the size of your choice to make the heart shape.
Fold it in half and draw half of your heart.
Cut the pattern with your craft scissors.
3. Make your base.
Draw the heart pattern over one piece of cardboard with a pencil.
Place it over the other layer of cardboard.
Then use your cheap pins (or thin nails) and stick them over the line of the DIY heart shape. Make sure your pin pierces both layers of cardboard.
4. Prepare the yarn.
This heartstring art only required a little material.
I wrapped the yarn about 25 times on 4 of my fingers and used that measurement for each one of the hearts.
The amount of yarn will depend on how filled you want your string art heart to be.
In your container, put a mixture of one part water and two parts glue and mix it well.
Place your yarn inside the container to gently absorb the mixture and squeeze the excess.
5. Create your heart string art.
Start wrapping the string of the yarn between the pins randomly to make the heart shape.
When you are satisfied with your result, wrap the yarn on the outer edge of the heart to “contain” the weaving.
Use a brush and add more glue mixture to the strings to ensure the wrapped middle section will end up glued to the outer edge.
Leave it to dry for 1-2 hours under the sun. Or leave it overnight.
6. Remove the pins.
With the help of a pair of pliers, remove the pins carefully by twisting them and pulling them out.
Don’t worry if some of the strings detach from the edge. You can always put on some more glue on it.
And that’s it!!
Now you have an excellent decoration for your home.
