Alright, let’s tackle one of the biggest holiday headaches: tangled Christmas lights. If you’ve ever spent hours untangling a mess of lights while muttering words you wouldn’t say in front of Grandma, this one’s for you. 

And let me just show off a little here—I haven’t dealt with tangled lights in over five years! Not a single knot. Want to know my secret? It’s this simple method I use every single year.

As soon as I take the lights off the Christmas tree, I start by finding the end of the series at the very top of the string. I let a little bit of the cord hang loose (just enough to work with) and begin folding the lights in a zigzag motion. 

Hold one bulb gently between my thumb and index finger, then place the next bulb down near the base of my palm. All the while, I keep the middle of the cord held securely in the center of my hand with my other fingers.

Keep repeating this zigzag fold until the entire string is neatly packed. Then comes the magic trick: I use the tail of the cord to wrap around the whole pack, snugly holding everything together. And voila! A perfectly compact bundle of lights.

Next, I either place the bundle back into its original box (it fits like a glove!) or, if the box is long gone, I slip it into a couple of toilet paper rolls that I cut vertically to make them fit.  From there, all the bagged lights go into a single storage bin or cardboard box. No tangles, no hassle, and no wasted space!

2. Save Space When Storing Ornaments

Let me introduce you to the hack that has saved me the most space over the years. You know these fancy ornament storage bins you see all over Amazon? The ones with tons of little compartments, each designed to snugly hold a single ornament?

Here is the truth: most ornaments are made of durable plastic, so you don’t need padded compartments. You can easily pack many ornaments into one bin without separators.

First, I grab a sturdy bin that can handle some weight without collapsing. Then, I group the ornaments by color (because that’ll make decorating so much easier next year).

I place each group in a separate bag—this could be zip-top bags or, my personal favorite, those plastic bags you get when you order clothes online. You know the ones I’m talking about, right? I always save them for later, and they work perfectly here!

Once the ornaments are all bagged up, I neatly stack the bags in the bin, putting the most delicate items toward the top just to be safe. No wasted space, no bulky compartments, and everything stays tidy and protected.

If you want to skip the bags you can place the ornaments right into a plastic bin, and you will save even more space that way. This method totally changed my Christmas storage game! Let’s talk about ribbon storage—specifically, why I can’t stand the bulky cardboard spools they come on. They take up so much unnecessary space! 

So, instead of keeping them on their original spools, I ditch the bulky packaging and use a method that’s compact and keeps my ribbons looking great.

First, I roll the ribbons tightly over themselves into neat little bundles. Once they’re rolled up, I grab an empty toilet paper roll to protect them. I cut the cardboard roll vertically, then wrapped it around the ribbon roll from top to bottom. This keeps the ribbon from getting smashed or wrinkled while in storage.

This method is especially useful if you store all your ribbons in a single box. The toilet paper rolls keep everything snug and tidy. Plus, it’s a great way to reuse something you’d normally throw out!

If you’ve got bead string decorations, you know how easily they can turn into a tangled mess during storage. But don’t worry—I’ve got a super simple solution that’s saved me so much time and space. But let’s be real—they’re not exactly budget-friendly, and for me, they’re not a necessity right now. Instead, I use a method that’s simple, effective, and easy on the wallet: big trash bags.

I stack my wreaths one on top of the other, starting with the largest at the bottom and working my way to the smallest. But I don’t stop there—the center of each wreath is prime storage real estate! I fill those spaces with smaller garlands, ribbons, or fabric decorations, like my snowflake table runner or even my Christmas stockings.

Once the bag is full and every nook and cranny is being used, I close it up and squeeze out as much air as I can. Then, I wrap the bag neatly, making it as compact as possible. This way, everything stays contained and protected without taking up unnecessary space.

And let me tell you, once the air is out of the bag, the whole package becomes surprisingly small and easy to store.

6. Store Your Christmas Tree With Fabric Strips

Now, let’s talk about the big one—your Christmas tree.

It’s all about using what you already have, and if you’ve been following my blog, you know I’m a big fan of sewing. That means I’m constantly surrounded by fabric scraps and fabric twine, which I save for projects just like this.

I know some hacks recommend using plastic kitchen wrap to compress the tree, but let’s be honest—that’s not exactly eco-friendly. Once you unwrap it, that plastic is headed straight to the trash. 

Instead, consider using reusable options like fabric strips, fabric twine, or any twine you have on hand. You’ll save space, keep your storage green, and give your scraps a second life.

When it’s time to store the tree, I grab a bunch of fabric strips or twine—the kind that’s too small or random to use in other projects. I start by wrapping the fabric strips tightly around the tree, layer by layer.

Right now, I’m still using the original boxes my trees came in, even though they’re starting to wear out. For now, they’re doing the job, and the extra space I free up in the box can be used for smaller decorations. 

When the boxes eventually give out, I’ll look into another storage solution, but this method will still work beautifully.
