I noticed the Martelli rotary cutter was not in your top ten. Is this because it didn’t make the cut or that it wasn’t considered? There is a separate left-handed version and the larger 60mm cutter takes special Martelli blades, which maybe disqualifies it as an option. I am curious, however, about your thoughts on the ergonomic design and what others say about it.

this is very informative. I have been cutting, teaching cutting for over 30 years. Have always liked the Olfa brands especially the ergonomic with lock. Safe even for my youngest (12yo) student a it closes when handle released. Just recently acquired a student who came to class with the Fiskar cutter. As I was teaching basic I went through my safety speech: Pick up open cut close and put down: Every time. Have been doing it this way forever. The Fiskar has a slide lock that you must move before the blade opens. It was difficult to engage. It is still sharp and has a locking button, but that slide lock was not easy. Just adding my teachery 2cents.

This means Olfa Rotary cutters are way safer for beginners than Fiskars. But Fiskars endure more. I gotta think that a “too sharp” rotary cutter is also dangerous for a beginner.
