There are many types of presser feet that can expand your sewing possibilities.

To help you, I have created this handy guide with pictures and descriptions. Just as a bonus for being an amazing reader, I have included a free printable guide that includes over 30+ of the most common universal presser feet for sewing machines (including the ones here).
So, keep reading until the end to know how to get it.
What is a sewing machine presser foot?

A sewing machine presser foot is an attachment that holds the fabric in place and feeds it through the sewing machine while sewing.
It’s the part that keeps the fabric in place as you stitch, making sure it feeds the fabric evenly while the machine is sewing it.
These amazing attachments are super easy to attach to your sewing machine and can save you a lot of time on certain techniques.
There are different presser feet for different sewing finishes, such as making a straight stitch, sewing a buttonhole or buttons, sewing invisible and regular zippers, gathering fabric, and so much more.
With the help of the sewing machine presser feet, you can create some amazing seams and finishes on your projects that will make them stand out! Trust me, they are life-changers! So, don’t hesitate to give them a try!
How to change the presser feet.
In order to use any sewing machine presser foot, you have to change the one that you are currently using on your sewing machine.
The standard sewing machine presser foot is the straight stitch foot, which comes with your sewing machine.
If you already know about all the parts of your sewing machine, you already know that there is a release button on the back of your machine foot.

By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to quickly and easily change your sewing machine presser foot.
First, make sure the needle and presser foot are raised. Then, locate the release button for the presser foot and press it to remove the old foot. Next, take the new presser foot and align the notch of the holder with the foot’s pin. Finally, slowly lower the presser foot level until you hear a “snap” sound, indicating that it’s properly attached.
Different Sewing Machine Presser Feet
If you’re looking for a set of presser feet that can be used with any sewing machine, quite a few brands offer universal kits. I purchased these presser feet kits from Amazon, and they’ve been working great for me so far.

These are the different types of sewing machine presser feet you will find out there.
1. All Purpose Foot/Straight Stitch Foot

This is the basic presser foot that comes with your sewing machine. It is also known as a zig-zag or a standard foot. There are many different styles of this particular foot, but they all have a wide opening so the needle can sew on its wider stitch setting. They also have sewing guides. It’s perfect for basic tasks like seaming, topstitching, and edge stitching where you need a straight stitch.
2. Zipper Foot

The zipper foot has a very narrow body with notches on each side so that you can align the needle either on the left or on the right side of the foot. This will allow you to sew your seam very close to the zipper teeth. The foot normally comes with two pins so that you can use them on both sides of the zipper.
3. Invisible Zipper Foot

An invisible zipper foot has two grooves under the zipper so you can guide each side of the zipper teeth through them and sew as close to them as possible. I recommend you learn how to properly use an invisible zipper foot so you can achieve neat results and take advantage of it.
4. Overcasting Presser Foot

The overcasting presser foot is a great alternative to a serger machine overlock seam. This little presser foot will help you sew overcasting stitches along the edges of the cut fabric to prevent them from fraying. Use a zig-zag or an overcast seam and feed the fabric using the guide on the right side.
5. Monogramming Foot

The monogramming foot has a “tunnel” underneath the foot, which allows the bulky stitches of a satin stitch to pass freely under it. This reminds me that you can also find this presser foot with the name of a “Satin Stitch Foot.” It is mainly used on decorative seams.
6. Stitch In The Ditch Foot

This presser foot is one of the most popular ones for making perfect topstitching between the seams of fabric patchwork. But it can also be used for many other sewing applications. Some of those applications are understitching or joining two pieces of fabric side by side.
7. Walking Foot

The walking foot attachment helps your sewing machine to feed thicker fabrics or many layers of fabrics at once. What it does is help the top layers of the fabric feed at the same time rate as the bottom layers, so you can even have seams. This is particularly useful if you are making quilt projects or working with jersey or leather fabrics.
8. Buttonhole Presser Foot

The buttonhole presser foot helps you make perfectly sized buttonholes that match every button size. To create a buttonhole using the automatic buttonhole foot, simply place your button in the gauge located at the back of the foot and follow your sewing machine’s buttonhole instructions. Some machines have 4-step buttonhole feet, and others have a 1-step buttonhole foot (the latest is the best one).
9. Button Foot

If you’re tired of attaching buttons to your garments by hand, I have some good news for you. The button presser foot is an amazing tool that can save you a lot of time and effort. This attachment can easily attach buttons to your sewing machine without any complications. It holds your button down, and you use a zig-zag stitch to sew it onto your garment. It’s that easy!
10. Teflon Foot

This non-stick foot is used to make straight and zig-zag seams on sticky or heavyweight fabrics with shiny finishes such as plastic, vinyl, lycra, or faux leather. Its Teflon cover allows it to slide over these types of fabrics instead of getting stock as your regular metallic foot.
11. Gathering Foot

The gathering presser foot is a sewing machine attachment, usually sold separately, that is used to gather automatically or shirr fabric while you sew it. By using this presser foot and modifying some settings on your sewing machine, you will be able to automatically gather the fabric as you feed it through the machine. It has a left-opened slot to put a second layer of fabric in so you can sew and gather two layers at the same time. This will give you, as a result, one flat layer of fabric and one gathered.
12. Blind Hem Foot

When attached to a sewing machine and after selecting the blind stitch mode, the blind hem foot makes a stitch consisting of a series of straight stitches and one zig-zag stitch. The latter will grab a small portion of your folded hem with a stitch. Once you unfold your hem, that stitch will be a small point on the front of the fabric. Almost invisible to the naked eye.
13. Rolled Hem Foot

A rolled hem presser foot is used to make narrow double-folded hems on the edge of your fabrics. The fabric is fed through the foot and rolled into the tunnel under it to form the tiny hem.
14. Quarter Inch Quilting Foot

Using a quarter-inch piecing or seam foot makes sewing accurate 1/4″ seams really easy by using the guide on the right side. The distance from this guide to the standard center needle position is exactly ¼”. This foot is very useful when you are working on patchwork and quilting projects that require precise topstitching. This presser foot has a guide that allows you to align your seams accurately and achieve a parallel seam of ¼ inch. Simply guide the seam through the presser foot guide, and you will end up with a neat and tidy seam.
15. Free Motion Foot

If you love to sew and want to try something fun and creative, you might want to check out the free-motion foot! With this amazing tool, you can sew in any direction and through several layers of fabric. It’s perfect for free-motion embroidery and quilting. But before you start, you need to make sure your sewing machine has the feed dogs down. If it doesn’t, just lower them, and you’re good to go. If your machine doesn’t allow this function, don’t worry! You can still use the free-motion foot by covering the feed dogs with a plate that should have come with your sewing machine.
What are all the Sewing Machine Presser Feet?

We just discussed the most popular machine presser feet. But did you know that there are more than 30 presser foot styles?

Hi Janet! Thank you so much, I hope you have all the blessings too!
FYI, your box to request the presser foot cheat sheet does not appear when I’m using the Firefox browser. It does appear when using Safari and Chrome.
More than likely this is due to an Extension I’ve installed in Firefox or a default browser setting I’d have to change. If I knew what was causing the problem, which is of course a problem in itself 🙂
For those not seeing the box, the simplest thing to do is try a different browser. It’s easy enough to install Chrome to have as a fall back whenever you run into problems like this.
Thanks!
Hi Paul! Thank you so much for this! I hope it helps other people who are having a hard time finding this.
I received the presser foot guide, however Windows says it does not have permission from you to open the file.
Hi Clyrissa! The document is blocked for editing, if you tried to edit it will deny you access to that function.
However it shouldn’t be saying you can’t open it. Please write me a DM on our official Facebook page so I can help you further and with more detail.
There is no form for requesting the guide.

I have checked my Spam and there is nothing there. Please help I bought a 72 piece set and I really would love to have this.
Hi Madelaine! The email can be on three places, either the main folder, the promotions folder or the spam folder. It is called “Your Presser Feet Guide Is Inside” and on my end says it was delivered Jan 15th 😉 this year.
Could you help me check it out on the other folders please??

Hi: I’m lookig forward to getting the cheat sheet!! I love all the information that is on your web site. Super informative!!!!!
I think you are going to enjoy it a lot Susan!! Sending love!
I bought a 72 pc feet set from Temu awhile back. Of course, I had to straighten the box. Each foot has its own little shaped space. There was a list included that helped. Then I made my own list, with feet in order of how they are in the box. But NOTHING to explain what each foot does. I am really looking forward to your guide so I can start using all these feet!
Thank you so much! I had the exact same expirience. That’s why I decided to make this guide. Let me know what you think about it.
I found where the email ays your presser foot guide is inside but the download doesn’t take me to the guide. What am I doing wrong!
Hi gorgeous.
Could you please DM to our Facebook Page so I can help you with this??
Tried the download many times and the link keeps taking me somewhere else. I am not getting the presser foot cheat sheet. I sent my email, i signed into grow and still no cheat sheet. Can you not just send an attachment? It is getting frustrating.
Carolyn
Hey Carolyn, I’ve just checked on our end and you got the email with the atachment on the 15th. When you press the button that says “download the guide” your computer is going to open a window so you can tell it where you want to store the files. The files come in a ZIP folder you have to decompress to get access to. The guide is inside that folder. If you don’t get that window open you probably have an ad blocker preventing the download.
Please DM on our FB page so I can help you with this further 🙂
I cannot find my subscription to confirm or my cheat sheet anywhere
Hey gorgeous Rachel, that’s probably because our emails are getting into your spam or promotion folders. I have just checked on our end and you are already a subscriber. So you don’t have to subscribe again. Please try and look for any of our emails on those folders and drag them to the main folder so you can start seeing the emails you get from us 😉 ;).
If you need more help you can DM me on our FB page.
I scrolled and scrolled your site.. filled out 3 requests and read all the others’comments. Is this a Red Herring or a Treasure Hunt?
I really need the guide.
Hi Edith, well. It appears that you haven’t completed your sign-in on either form. I don’t have your email registred on our end. If you like I can help you personally if you DM via our Facebook page and I can help you myself.
Just FYI just by putting your email and your name on the yellow bright form and then click “Get on the list” you will get your Guide on your email. Please make sure you get the confirmation message after you click on the button ;).
If you still having issues DM!

You are most welcome my dear! Now you will know what each one of these presser feet does.
Hi
This is a general question.
I forgot my password for MY golden Thimble so I requested a password change. The strange thing is the only password email I got was from ‘Grow’ media which I read that I needed to register my new password to get on to My Golden Thimble site.
Is this correct? Wth many spams etc, I’m wary of sites that I don’t know and I’m worried.
Many thanks.
Hi Jayne. Absolutely let me personally help you. I just wrote you an email. Please check your inbox.
Something will not allow me to download the presser foot pages. I can not put my information in so what am I doing wrong
Hi Janyce, there is a yellow box in this post, in which you have to put your name and email so we can send the guide to you. Have you done this step yet?
Thankyou ! I look forward to printing that to store with my machine x
So excited to see it! Please tag me @mygoldenthimble on your socials when you do it.
Thank you for the guide, unfortunately the last page says the same thing for all presser feet regarding the invisible presser foot & the overcasting foot.
Well, that goes to show what staying up until 4:00 AM making guides does to you… Oops!
I am so sorry about this. I just corrected that part and the updated version is sending now. I also sent the update to all the subscribers already so you should get an email with that fix today 🙂
Thank you so much for letting me know. You guys are the best.
I love everything you post. I learn so much from you. I am 81 years old and have been sewing since I was 9. I am a sloppy sewer. I always want to get finished. I am like that with all my crafting. Thank you for all your posts. They are great.
RZ
Hi Rosemarie! I totally get what you are saying. I get like that when I am sewing something “easy” but it turns out to be a several days project. But hey! The important thing is that we keep doing what makes us happy.
Hi thanks so much for posting this info.
I did sign up to get the guide, but since I am already on your mailing list I hope this does not duplicate my subscription. I will let you know if it does.
Hi Annete,
It won’t duplicate your subscription, it will just put you on a new segment so I can send you the email with the file. But yes, please let me know if you notice anything out of the ordinary. I am here to help.
