When I was brainstorming ideas for my Valentine’s Sewing Projects this year, I knew I wanted something festive but also practical—something I’d actually want to use all year long.

A statement piece! I kept seeing heart-shaped bags online, but none of them were quite right. They were either too fancy, too complicated, or just not functional enough for everyday use.

And don’t get me wrong, I love ruffles and complex patterns as much as the next girl. But it was just not what I was looking for.

So, I decided to design my own! A simple, stylish, and practical heart tote that I could carry anywhere.

So grab your fabric your sewing machine, and let’s get stitching!

About This Sewing Pattern

The finished Heart Tote Bag Sewing Pattern, which you can access at the end of this post, measures 12″ by 13 1/2″. It has long straps so you can wear it as a crossbody bag—I made mine 41″ long, but if you prefer a shoulder bag or handbag, you can simply shorten the straps to fit your style.

One of my favorite features of this bag is the handy zipper pocket inside the lining, perfect for safely storing your valuables. Since finishing this bag, I’ve been thinking—you could totally place this pocket on the outside, too! It’s completely up to you.

For fabric, I used a medium-weight cotton canvas with lightweight fusible interfacing. If you’re using quilting cotton, I recommend using medium-weight fusible interfacing so your bag holds its shape nicely.

Heart Tote Bag – Sewing Instructions

Cutting the Fabric:

  1. Cut 4 heart-shaped pieces for the bag body, applying fusible interfacing to the back.
  2. Cut 2 rectangles for the zipper pocket, marking the zipper opening on one.
  3. Cut 2 fabric strips for the bag straps of 3″ by 41″.

Sewing the Zipper Pocket:

  1. Place the marked pocket piece on the heart lining where the welt pocket will go, using the paper pattern as a guide.
  2. Sew around the rectangle, then carefully cut the center and snip small triangles at each end.
  3. Turn the pocket piece to the wrong side and press to form a clean opening.
  4. Pin the zipper behind the opening and sew it in place at 1/8″ from the edge.
  5. Attach the second pocket piece on top of the first and sew around the edges, keeping the heart fabric out of the way.

Sewing the Bag Body:

  1. Place the two lining heart pieces right sides together and sew around the edges at 1/2″, leaving a 3″ opening on one side. Repeat for the outer fabric.
  2. Trim excess fabric and snip curves, except for the top of the heart.

Sewing the Straps:

  1. Fold each strap piece lengthwise with right sides together and sew at 1/4″.
  2. Use a loop turner to turn them right side out, then press.
  3. Pin the straps to the heart notches on both sides of the outer fabric and sew at 1/2″.

Attaching the Lining to the Outer Fabric:

  1. Insert the outer fabric into the lining, right sides together, and align the top edges.
  2. Pin and sew around the top edge at 1/2″ seam allowance.
  3. Snip the center of the heart peak, then trim the seam allowance around curves.

Finishing the Bag:

  1. Turn the bag right side out through the lining opening so both fabrics are on the outside.
  2. Fold the seam allowances of the lining opening inward, pin it closed, and sew along the edge.
  3. Push the lining into the bag and press everything neatly.

Your heart tote bag is finished! Enjoy your handmade creation!

  1. Silly question but could I just use cotton fabric? I feel like it could be really cute with some of the Valentine’s fabric designs that are out there! I’m still kind of new(ish) to sewing so… 😂
